Roberta singing “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” is one of the most beautiful love songs ever recorded.
It was in a Clint Eastwood movie, I think maybe the first he directed, “Play Misty For Me”. Great Movie.
Even better than Killing Me Softly.
I just got chills from reading your suggestion! Such an impactful song and a great suggestion!
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is one of the greatest love songs in the world, and Roberta Flack is a goddess.
@@lazaruslong8092 Absolutely!
Roberta did not write this song, but she made it a hit. The writer, or one of the writers, said she was inspired by a Don McLean concert. Don is the guy who wrote American Pie and Vincent.
I had heard this too.
I think was Lori Liebreman !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was Lori Lieberman and the song that Don McMcClean was playing that inspired her to write lyrics on a napkin was "Empty Chairs" which was another song McMcClean wrote that was inspired by the painting Empty Chairs of VanGogh.
@@jamesferris4573 Yes Don suffered with depression and he felt sympathy for Van Gogh and his own battles.
You should listen to The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face., my very favorite and touches my soul. Her voice is impeccable. I love this song and her in general.
Yes! The studio version. It’s exquisite.
One of those great songs that has been covered a bazillion times, but no one has ever performed it as good as Roberta Flack (with huge credit to the backup singers and engineering).
I believe Roberta did the backup singing herself on this song. The vocals are layered over hew own main vocal.
My classic station that I listen to always plays the Fugee's version... it irritates me everytime. Yes, Lauryn Hill can sing, but the arraignment is weird, and ruins the vibe of the song.
....SHE...was ADORED by the LGBTQ COMMUNITY...in the coffee houses of NYC back in the 60s because of her STUNNING ability to convey DEEP EMOTION...that is kept UNSPOKEN...and then she BLEW UP....she was then ADORED by the MUSIC INDUSTRY...and everyone else...one of her backup singers and vocal arrangers... also became the same way...and she lovingly and very soberly told him to go out on his own....and he did to HUGE SUCCESS ALSO...and he has HIS version of the song too...that he dedicated to her in his live performance...and his name was....LUTHER VANDROSS...
Lori Lieberman was inspired after hearing Don McLean ( American Pie, Vincent) sing Empty Chairs in a small club in LA. She said tears were running down her face, while she was writing notes on a cocktail napkin. She took her notes to her producers who were working on her album. They helped complete it, but screwed her out of any writing credits. It was released, but didn’t become well known until Roberta Flack covered it. I believe Lauren Hill’s cover was a big hit too.
"Empty Chairs" will do that.
THANK YOU for putting that out there. She deserved all the credit IMO.
Lauryn Hill as a part of The Fugees did a terrific job of reimagining the song in their genre for sure; brought it to a whole new generation and was wildly successful with it. The video actually includes a cameo of Roberta herself!
@@carolynquinn8325 Roberto later said that she wasn't really fond of their cover. Rightfully so.
@@O_Towne_Bear I'm not too sure where you got that idea from, because everything I've read that she's said about the Fugees version has been positive. Here's a direct quote from the Guardian in 2015:
"I love hip-hop. In fact I love music, period. Lauryn Hill recorded Killing Me Softly [with the Fugees] and did an excellent job. She’s a genius musician and so is Wyclef Jean who co-produced it. I’m not going to hold on to that song with my heart and bleed to death while someone else covers it; I’m a music lover who has enough experience and common sense to know that it’s good they recorded it and had a hit. I had a hit with it, too, but I wasn’t the first person who recorded it".
The Fugees hit number one in 20 countries, won a grammy, and the track is certified triple platinum. And because we all know that popularity doesnt always mean "good" -- It wasnt just commercially successful, but also enjoyed (and still does) critical acclaim as well.
I've always considered it a beautiful and interesting homage. Just the intro alone - wow
I know I've said this before, Salvo, but it bares repeating--you're a wonderfully engaged listener/reactor, and you express yourself extremely well. Great job!
You really need to listen to her song, 'The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face." one of the best ever.
The Fugees did a fantastic remake of this. I listen to that one all the time ❤❤❤
Miss Roberta’s songs helped me manage my life back in the 70’s … she was strumming my life with her voice ❤️🩹💔❣️
Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song!
‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ is the best
Enjoy Silence of the Lambs, it’s quite the experience!!
Roberta Flack is one of my all-time favorite female artist.
This song was seriously everywhere when I was a child, and I have probably heard it a million times. Realizing now I have never heard it in headphones in stereo. Makes a difference, got lost in the song.
Pure romance! That was Roberta. Please check out " The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It was sung at many weddings during the 70's.
Prefer Celine Dion version
It cannot be overstressed just how BIG this song was when it came out. It was every high school girl's favorite song in 1973. Its a shame this music genre's been pretty much forgotten these days,
The original songwriter wrote this song when she went to hear Don McLean ("American Pie", "Vincent", "Crying") sing. She was so moved and so related to his lyrics and style that she felt almost as if her privacy had been violated by how personal and intimate it all felt -- as if she had been uncomfortably exposed. I was like five years old when this was a hit and I loved it then too.
There hasn't been anyone else like Roberta Flack, her phrasing, her voice, her intonation, suberb!
Her song, “the first time I ever saw your face “, is a stunner. You should watch her live performance of that while she plays the piano. It’s like diamonds in your ears.
Diamonds in your ears! Well said!🎙🎶💎👂💛💛💛💛💛
Roberta Flack is a queen👑
The studio version is a must.
I’m probably in the minority, but I like this song even better than “First time” Both beautiful, but this one impeccably written, to show the story, of a intense fan of a performer, enjoying and feeling the music and lyrics, and how they touch her soul. Masterpiece.
Drove this woman to a show in the 1990's in my limo. She warmed up her voice while staring at me in my rear view mirror for several moments on the way....I'll never forget it. I almost melted (or crashed). She had a small entourage with her, but she was yelling at them, and then ignoring them- I guess singing to a stranger before the show was a better warm-up.
I love this song so much….first heard it by Ms Roberta in the early 80’s as a small child…thankfully my mom and grandmother loved the easy listening stations that played music about 5- 10 years after it had been out……
Every song Roberta sings is a beautiful masterpiece 💗😍 Been a fan for 50 years if not more!! Classy Lady Miss Roberta is still today!! I've said a million times that music 🎵🎶 from the 70's was it!! And their music is still alive today thanks too you young people keeping it alive.. Because there will never be music like that again!! I'm so glad I grew up in the 70,s especially when I was in my teens in that time.. I wouldn't change it for nothing.. A great time, simpler times!! Love 💖 your channel
I remember hearing this song for the first time myself. Roberta Flack - an absolutely phenomenal artist. Phoebe Snow is another spectacular artist - Poetry Man. Thank you for giving this a listen!
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is also a must hear! Thank you for this reaction. Been a minute since I've heard this!
I saw her at the state fair the sound was so crystal clear and the entire crowd was in awe!
Great reaction. You need to listen to her duet in 1972 "Where is The Love" with Donny Hathaway that became a #1 R&B hit.
Supposedly written about seeing Don McLean play live.
As haunting as she is here, The First Time Ever I Saw your Face is so far and above. Love this lady and her voice!
Roberta Flack has such a beautiful voice. She had a lot of great hits in the 70's such as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" which was used in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film "Play Misty For Me". She also did "Feel Like Makin' Love" & some great duets with Donny Hathaway "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You".
Roberta is one of my favorites and yes she does play the piano on this one and First Time Ever I saw Your Face #1 favorite she is wonderful to watch performing ❤
Oh, how wonderful is this song? It is one of the most romantic songs ever written. Roberta Flack is one of the greats!
Roberta Flack was one of the first artists I heard on the radio as a pre-teen. Loved her style and voice. Still do.
One of my favorites of my early years. Definitely under appreciated and deserves to be played more.
Lauren Hill (from the group/The Fugees) sings a cover of "killing me softly ". Although, Roberta is the og of "Killing me softly ". Lauren's version was a huge success as it refers to the R&B/Hip charts. "The more you know ". 🖤🖤🖤
Hot take; I never liked that version one bit. I didn't care for her vocals, and I felt she brought the song down. To this day; I will never let that version play if I hear it on the radio or whatever.
Lauren Hill and the Fugees did an excellent job covering this song. It was a hit for a reason. She also did a duet cover with Bob MArley on "Turn Your Lights Down Low" which was also amazing!
The 70s wouldn't have been the same without Miss Roberta! She is from nearby Black Mountain, NC. I also second that this song was written about Don McLean. A great reaction, Sal.
By Lori Lieberman ??
Yes, that is correct.
Again; another song I grew to on. Flack's voice was once called The 'Quite Fire', as her voice can burn you from inside
It’s hauntingly beautiful…gorgeous song.
It's about her watching Don McLean watching him perform. American Pie/Vincent songwriter.
Her voice is so amazing ❤
Her voice is remarkable 😊
I love this song by Flack dearly , but the Fugees did a really good cover . Roberta Flack still rules ☮️
I'm so glad I'm old enough to have experienced all the great songs and singers from back then. I'm so happy that young people are hearing these epic songs and loving them as much as we did back in those dsys.
I never realized this wasn't a Burt Bacharach song. It sounds so much like his work. Finding the song's inspiration just makes it enjoyable. Thanks
Her top hits are ALL that way, you will love them!
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is a must listen. Roberta was my one and only celebrity crush at the age of 12. Beautiful voice on a stunning woman.
This has always been one of my favorites! I agree with the others. Next you have to do “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” You will love it!
The great Roberta Flack! I love "Oasis".
First record i ever bought all about Don McLean of course going around to Vincent Van Gogh keep an eye out for Lust For Life with Kirk Douglas in the staring role Vincent his greatest song in my mind
I read Lust for Life in high school and HAD to watch the movie. I stayed home from school one day because it was going to be on tv. Great movie. I hope Salvo listens to 'Vincent' soon. But he should do a little research on Vincent Van Gogh so he understands the song better.
That percussion in the end slaps. 🔥
Don't forget to check out her duets with Donnie Hathaway. Donnie Hathaway is a brilliant singer, considered one of the best voices ever and their two duets, Where Is the Love and The Closer I Get To You are both phenomenal.
You're taking me back today, SalvoG!!
And who woulda thought this amazing song was written by the guy who composed the theme to 'The Love Boat'.... exciting and new....
Thanks..you've been introduced to the Love Poetry of ms Roberta Flack
I hadn't heard this song in years until I saw this appear on my feed. Now I realize how much I missed it!
Everyone has said it but “The First Tine Ever I saw your face” is a must
This song makes my heart feel so good...Just beautiful ❤️
She has some great songs. Keep going with her.
This song always gives me goosebumps, every time hearing it. 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️👍
Where Is the Love with Donny Hathaway is to DIE for! Killing Me Softly was written by song writer Norman Gimbel while attending a Don McLean concert, the song was an emotional reaction to his feelings at the concert.
Written by Lori Lieberman about attending a Don McLean concert.
You absolutely need to hear her studio recording of THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE. She recorded it in 1969 on her debut album First Take, but never became a hit until nearly 3 years later, entirely because Clint Eastwood included it in his movie PLAY MISTY FOR ME (his 1971 directorial debut). If you think Killing Me Softly is "Haunting" - you ain't heard Roberta's best, yet! I get misty every time I hear it.
Saw her live in the 80s. What a vocalist she was. Such a cool groove that night. Wish I could go back there and re-live that night.
Rita Coolridge "We're All Alone" is another good romantic song of that time.
Roberta;s niece Rory was a professional figure skater and this is one of the songs she always skated to
I believe that the he song was written for, and originally recorded, by Lori Lieberman. As far as I know, it was her debut album.
Ms. Flack, who was more well-known at the time, (early 70s), did this cover of the song not long after the original was released. The radio stations played her version and Ms. Lieberman's career was studied.
By the way, Lori's rendition is, i.m.o., every bit as good.
You must listen to The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face! It’s breathtakingly beautiful.
Dreamy. Pure perfection still to this day.
If you like R&B, Soul, Jazz fusion you'd like Anita Baker's Sweet Love or Sade's Sweetest Taboo. Both ladies have great catalogs.
Love Anita Baker
I was SO into Anita Baker. She should have been invited to the We Are The World recording session.
I had her album sweet love, my favorite song is same old love. Sooo good.
How about a Saturday bracket night? Maybe the greatest Songs or Groups of the 70's. Or the best Rock ballads, like Amanda by Boston or Winds or change by the Scorpions or dust in the wind. the list is endless. Angie by the stones, the way that I choose by Bad Company. just endless.
Loved this song my whole life❤. Thank you for another great reaction video.
I’ve always loved this song. Fugees did a great cover of this.
This is a Lori Lieberman´s song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She sang a couple of songs with Peabo Bryson, The Closer I Get to You and Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You.
This song and all the other suggestions are great but I'm going to suggest something different. She recorded a cover of a Leonard Cohen song called "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" which is my favorite song of hers.
❤that song! Roberta is terrific. Everyone will tell you to listen to " The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" It's a great song also. But I think everyone knows that song, her other big hit, and You may recognize it once you hear it. I recommend "The River" from the Killing Me Softly LP. I think it will give you that same kind of vibe with something a little different.
She’s amazing❣️One of my favorite singers🔥🔥🔥
Besides her singles with Donny Hathaway (my favorite is "The Closer I Get To You"...wore that record OUT!!!) she had hit duets wth two other artists, "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love" with Peabo Bryson and "Set The Night To Music" with Maxi Priest. Both great.
I still have the piano sheet music for this
Lauren Hill with the Fugees covered this in the 90s, adding a regae beat. It's really good, too.
Love Roberta, love this song & I love your reactions! The wonderful music of my youth brings me right back to where I was, what I was doing & how I was feeling. Best time machine we have to date.
I remember hearing this song so many times on my radio in my bedroom late at night in the early 70s.... still sounds just as amazing!
Almost every high school choir in the early 70's was performing the musical "Jesus Christ Super Star" for concerts.
Great great cover !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this forgot all about it thank you for this n I love the way look it to the background of the song genius 😘🥰
Patty LaBelle will blow your socks off her version of Over The Rainbow 🌈
Always loved this song, this version.
Great taste and reaction to this classic song! You’re awesome!
❤She was so unique and I just love her. The Fugees do a SPECTACULAR cover of this song that you must do soon......kind of like the Dolly/Whitney thing. You will love it because both versions are 🔥🔥🔥
Just adding in to the chorus of people telling you to listen to The FIrst Time Ever I Saw Your Face -- there's a great live version (too fast for my ear), but the official recorded version is just legendary!
My favorite song from Roberta is "People on a String" from the White Knights movie soundtrack. Breathtaking voice!
I love that movie!
Beautiful song. So you gonna watch Silence of the Lambs... Enjoy and don't be too scared. You must watch the whole range.
Such a wonderful reaction - her voice hits my heart chakra so hard! Her piano proficiency is also stunning. Thanks, Sal! 😊
Beautiful 💎💖
Roberta Flack really is a great musician and a very talented pianist as well who has deservedly had many hit records. However, to me it will always be Lori Lieberman's song because she was the first performer, I prefer her sparser rendition and she was the one who, at the very least, who provided the original idea and from whom the lyrics sprang. Personally, as a fan of hers, I think that she did more than that because the song is very much in her style. Unfortunately, the two men who managed her took the entire credits (and royalties) for this song and claimed that Lori had nothing to do with the composition. Fortunately, Don Mclean stood by Lori and told the true story.
Roberta Flack first heard Lori's version on a flight and liked it so much that she tracked it down.
I think that you should play Lori's recording too. It has an acoustic guitar backing and is much more in Judy Collins style but she was and still is a great performer.
Another song I've known and loved since I was a kid. I think I was four years old when it came out, and it just seeped into my consciousness early enough that I don't remember not knowing it. Heard a lot of great music riding in the back seat of my parents' car and still love it all. If you liked this, you would like "Poetry Man" by Phoebe Snow, "Help Me" by Joni Mitchell and the sad but beautiful "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian.
I love this song so much. Her duet Donny "The Closer I Get to You" is one of my top duets. You should check it out. Love it.
Such a gorgeous song!❤❤😊
I think most people could relate to this song. I also like the Fugues version of this beautiful song.
❤Oh yes......BTW she is playing the piano too
Absolutely unbelievably beautiful. Check out “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. I consider this song one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It makes me cry. It’s so tender. A true love song.
The first time ever I saw your face is another beautiful song Great reaction as always 👏👏👏
The songwriter who wrote this song did so after being inspired by seeing Don McLean in concert.
