Taxes are the killer of moving to Spain.
I spent a few days in Cadiz a few years ago It's a great city and it's one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Great weather (quite windy). Great and super fresh and very affordable seafood. The accommodation is rather expensive and the city is rather crowded as it's one of the most populated cities in the world per square km. We loved it.
One of the best things about Freaksss videos is that you always do such a great job of asking the best and most relevant questions!
All those things carol said at the end of this interview made so much sense let things go and relax. Wonderful job 😊
That 400 euro per month rent is probably a room in a shared apartment, or a small shabby apartment in the worst part of town- not what most people are looking for when they move.
Thanks for all the good info!
Great chat! My wife and I are 75% sure we’ll move elsewhere for retirement, and Spain and Portugal share the top spot right now. It was great hearing Carole’s experience in Cádiz.
Thank you for your video 🙏🏽
(It’s pronounced ‘pah-ee-yah’)
Thanks for sharing!
This stuff is great!
Very nice interview. In the future, they could probably tell you what their burn rate for everything is per month. It would be nice to find out what that is.
My husband and I live in Ireland he is Irish I am American, we are thinking of moving to Cadiz possibly next year, we are both in our 60's he is still working and I am on SSDI, What is the medical coverage like over there? I didnt hear you speak about or if you did I might have missed it.
I loved this video-going to Seville to study with my Flamenco teachers in November. I have always wanted to see Cadiz too. I am self employed as a psychotherapist and get taxed heavily in the USA. As a digital nomad, I would probably be taxed by both countries. What are your thoughts on this?
You would have to file taxes but one will off set the other due to a dual taxation treaty between the US and Spain. Love Flamenco!!
Numbeo suggests € 800 for rent in the city center for a one bedroom.
Great interview! My wife and I used to live in Sonoma, CA, so we are very familiar with Napa, CA (a the high cost of real estate, lol).
The pension income requirement for a lot of the retirement visas can be difficult for many Americans because unlike the rest of the world, we are expected to fund the bulk of our retirement through savings rather than guaranteed government or company pensions. For us, SS income is supposed to be the bare bones sustenance level income and therefore isn’t very high. I wish more countries would take total assets into account in addition to guaranteed pension income when establishing criteria for retirement visas.
Thank you for viewing and this information! What countries have you been looking at as possibilities to retire to?
They will take other assets into account. I am not taking SS yet so I am showing savings. I have not provided my IRA however and will do so when I am at year 4 and 5 renewal most likely. SS is great since it it guaranteed, almost better than a paycheck.
We have a long list, mainly because we haven’t yet started any serious work of narrowing down the list. But it includes Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Spain. France, Italy, Greece, South Africa, etc, etc, LOL. We have another 5 years or so before we’ll be able to retire. And we’ll probably travel for 2-3 years after we retire before settling down in one place. There’s so much world to see!
That's a great list! Love the options.@@Calipeixegato
Carole, what did you end up doing with Medicare? Are you paying into it also? Great video - really enjoyed hearing your first-hand experience.
Not there yet but Type A is free so prob will just sign up for that
I have friends in Florida moving to Madrid non-lucrative visas. she is 62 and private medical insurance is $130.00 month/no copays at all. He is 67 and paying 180.00 month. He has prescriptions that only pays $3.00 a month where in the US he had 30.00 copays.
Thats great. I love Madrid!
I just found your channel. This is good information.I have heard that your overall income is taxed in Spain, Is that true? that was not covered and I too am in my 60s. Please let me know.
Your income will be taxed in both Spain and the US. You'll need to work with a CPA that can help you take advantage of the dual taxation treaty!
If your say 7 yrs off receiving a pension does money put in a Spanish bank help acquire a visa 😊
See my response above. Savings definitely counts and it doesn't have to be in a Spanish bank, but I am sure it helps. You must report any amounts over 10k (in a Spanish bank) so I am keeping my amounts low for now.
Why did Carole and her husband decide to choose Cadiz in Spain rather than a similar location in Portugal, such as in the Algarve area?
Cost of living is much higher in the Algarve these days.
Good information. However, her arrogance is off-putting.😮
Oh shit, didn't mean to come off as arrogant. That's not me. Definitely opinionated. He was asking me about my experience after all.
I didn’t get that impression at all!
Thanks for viewing. Please keep in mind that many of my guests have never been on a podcast before like Carole and being on a public format for the world to see can be a bit uncomfortable and taken out of context. Carole is / was amazing and offered to provide her experience to truly help others considering the same.
I don’t find this lady arrogant at all. Many people would be unwilling to be so open. Thank you, Carol.😊
I did not find her arrogant at all; I'm glad she was so transparent. Speaking as one who lives in Spain, I´m glad she dispelled the sangria, tapas and paella narrative.
