LYRICS
I’m writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I’ll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don’t want the crown
You can take it now
You promised the world and brought me it hanging from a string
Stuck in my mouth, into my throat
Told me to sing
That was the first time I knew
You can’t kill the king
And those who kiss the ring
Tell me how
It’s better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn’t scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It’s better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn’t dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I’m writing a chapter on what to do after they dig you up
On what to do after you grew to hate what you used to love
That was the first time I knew
They were out for blood
And they would have your guts
Tell me how
It’s better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn’t scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It’s better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn’t dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I’m writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I’ll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don’t want the crown
You can take it now
You can take it now
Take it now

Robert Smith's voice hasn't changed a bit and I love this collaboration.
I need more of this collaboration.
Who's AWAKE in 2021?
Speaking of Robert Smith I heard that the cure has recorded two new albums it should be out this year or next year will see.
Closing my eyes during his Glastonbury 2019 set took me back two or three decades... what an incredible singer he still is and perfect for this collab - bliss (thanks to Chvrches as well obviously! ; )
So true! And Robert's harmonizing with Lauren during the chorus' is just so perfect. The word 'icon' is thrown about so easily these days but he truly is one.
The world needs Robert Smith more than ever.
Definitely ❤️
To depress us!? 😂
I’ve seen them 3 times and am a fan but my question is “why?”
Oh no, Barbra Streisand is back?
YASSSSS!!!! I was thinking that earlier! We all need The Cure!!!
We need an album full of Just Like Heavens, Mint Cars, Lovecats, Inbetween Days, Friday I'm in Loves, Doing the Unstucks, Close to Mes, type songs. Leave it to Robert Smith of all people to lift us up haha!
Roberts voice introduction is magical
I’m 48 and I love Lauren
Robert Smith, one of the best preserved voices in the musical landscape, crystal clear like in the 80's.
Speciale with siouxsie and the banshees in '83
For real! I saw him live in 2019 and it was as if no time had passed. Performed for 3 hours like it was 40 mins
Instantly recognizable. Perfect for this
He looks like Alice Cooper LOL
Couldn't agree more, saw the cure live a couple of years ago and every single song sounded JUST like the it did on record but better! Only concert ive been to where it felt like that.
Robert Smiths voice still sound fucking amazing.
It’s over a year and a half later and I’m still awestruck at this collab. It’s seriously such a beautifully done song.
it's a beautiful thing when this happens..
Totally!
My sentiments exactly. My favourite ear worm.
It almost seems out of place, Robert Smith and Chvrches. But greatness recognizes greatness I guess.
@@nicholasstephens4310Ya know, I could see why one would think that. But in the end, they’re both alternative with fairly dark or somber lyrical content, so I really wasn’t much surprised when it worked the way it did, and MAN did it!!
Also, fully agreed about greatness.
I'm sure that having Robert Smith featuring on one of their album has to be one of the things they are the most proud about in their career.
And his too.
Oof yes
Working with Robert Smith and also scoring a game soundtrack for a Hideo Kojima project too. That's some going.
I mean how could it not be? & to have it be such a banger
It's the best kind. I remember hearing Chvrches in like 2014 because I had a Pandora playlist made from Dark Matter (who I heard from GTA V), I forgot about DM almost immediately (rediscovered later) and I listenwd to Chvrches for a solid while.
It's so cool to see new albums come out, as well as collabs, and video game soundtracks. I love seeing the success I know they deserve @@pixelfascination
Robert Smith doing Robert Smith, and still relevant in six different decades.
A true artist. They don't make those anymore....
Ya, he’s pretty cool.
I love that Robert has stayed true to himself after all these years
Agree
He never grew of his emo phase, hes my idol. 🖤 i wanna be the emo cool grandpa too.

I don’t think enough people appreciate what you just said. It is difficult and admirable to not just finding who you are, but following that path and sticking it out through all of the changes in one’s life, and the culture around them.
I’m glad someone appreciates Robert the way you do.
Robert Smith has arguably the best voice of the past 35-40 years in indie rock & pop.
how cool she is
Who else is obsessed with this song? >_
Meeee
Yo
Best song of 2021
Not me.
Yup!
Long life to Robert Smith
3:04 Truly, that kick, that moment shows the anger that sometimes is hide in sadness
I know it's not but I would totally believe this was a sample of Robert Smith from thirty years ago. The voice has not changed.
This isn't a song, it's an experience.
It's true!
Cringe
Accurate
This isn’t a song, it’s a sandwich

Brilliant. Lauren and Robert Smith's voices are wonderful together.
*VERY GOOD!!!!!! - But it is SO WORST than this one* kkk

I just said the same to my friend when I sent her the video
It gives me hope that my fleeting fantasies of Lauren collaborating with Dirk Ivens may come to fruition.

@Evan Lanning shut the hell up Evan💀Chvrches rule supreme...
Tf you going out of your way to hate man
It's not anyone's fault you don't enjoy life
This song and album deserved a Grammy nod. Not that those count for any type of notoriety anymore, but the band deserves it honestly.
You mean the scammies??
They are playing it live at the NME Awards this year!
The Grammys need new blood and controllers.,
To be fair, if any band had to compete against CHVRCHES or The Cure, it would be an awfully short awards show.
@@richardmaloney2648 i mean back in 2001 bloodflowers got nominated for a grammy and lost to radiohead....
Man, what I’d give for more Lauren Mayberry and Robert Smith. Both absolute powerhouses vocally and mesh so well together
Mayberry? Isn't it Perlman?
@@TruthandLiberty no it's definitely Mayberry
I agree❤
I’m adoring this new darker CHVRCHES vibe, Science/Visions was always my favorite track on the debut album
YES. Science/Visions was so underrated, along with Night Sky, I think.
Science/Visions is my favourite CHVRCHES song, period.
A deep cut for sure!
Science/Visions is a straight banger, and Tether is awesome too!

The guitar tones alone in this song are such an obvious tribute to the fucking Legend of Robert Smith
absolutly
The whole thing is an obvious Cure tribute ... guitar yes, also the drum pattern, lyrics, everything pretty much. I think it's amazing.
True
Yes, that arrangements are very similar and I looove it.
especially the synths at 0:32 very 80s Cure
We are all surrounded by ether like fish with water. The Best! Ideal links Robert Smith from The Cure - super!
robert smith is legend!!!
This is like '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s, '20s all in a sound. Kinda like the song that you'd listen to in the beginning of the millenium and think it's 20 years ahead of its time. Pure addiction.
So you've spoken the exact words from my mind!
70s
So 2000s!
@@lethewards I agree, this sounds so much like pop from 2000s and i just love it!
That's what I said
I've been obsessed with this damn song since it dropped
I didn't like it at first, now I can't get it out of my head
Me too
I'm with Anna, I didn't like it at first, but after listening to it again and actually listening to it and hearing the cure tribute the last minute or two of the song, and Robert ending it, I just love it now.

I felt in love at first sight
This song sounds like tracks in the The Cure's "Bloodflowers" album.
Love this!
Robert Smith-“Mom.. it was never a phase, it's a lifestyle"
Disintegration is the best album ever.
Absolutely I Love it! It's in my car cd player, always cranked up on a long drive!

Now we just have to get CHVRCHES to collab with Barbara Streisand
Raba Smeef, Raba Smeef

I have a daughter that i named Mayberry (I derived from Lauren) and by the end of last year, i have a son that i named Smith (which is taken from Robert) i think the universe has crossed its path again

Smith for a first name? Why?
@@xshadowscreamx no it is not a first name, it is the middle name
@Todd Starbuck whoops. You are late. Here is the thing, i live in Indonesia where surname is not a compulsory. I dont have a surname as well from my father so what the hell

LOL nice one but i agree tho
Robert Smith is a behemoth in the realms of pop music, right up there with the likes of Lennon, Bowie, Prince...
Robert Smith. What a legend. And he sounds Better than ever on this one. 🙌
This song is so addictive.
I’ve listened to it 45 mins straight this morning.
2am when I thought I had seen everything for the night I find this and can't stop listening.
I have to hear it like 12 times a day to get my fix 🤣
I have the last minute of the song on repeat. Reminds me of both 2000s trance guitar and Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill OST.
yeah its an experience listening to
My God. This has got to be one of the best musical collaborations I have ever heard.

Very impressed with this song. You can hear the influence from Robert especially at the end. The end sounded like it could easily belong on the Disintegration album. I have been longing for a sound like this again.
You might also like the new Sneaker Pimps album (Squaring the circle). I love both, so maybe you too?
You will likely love The Cure's long awaited new album.out in a few months then!
Good to read you plus the list of responses, Robert is still alert, alive, attractive for non typique, himself, one of the best guitar players worldwide. Their first album is in my hand....wow how time does fly from France

Hearing this on CSI Vegas made my whole day. Love this song.
Needs more Robert Smith.
There are 2 new The Cure albums readied for release and supposedly a solo Smith album also coming!
Sweet song but the third chorus and outro i’m not crazy about there to long. Wish it would of been more standard... I feel stuff like that holds Chvrches back.. Like somethings always missing. But Awesome song.
I was really praying for a wicked Bob solo I gotta admit ...
Agreed.
@@bvaljalo yup
As a Cure fan of over 35 years, I absolutely approve. What an incredibly beautiful and haunting song from top to bottom! Bravo everyone!!
I first heard The Cure in Paris in March 1987 when I was 13 (nearly 14), on a school French exchange trip....the era of "Why can't I be you?" and I've never looked back 34 years on... The Cure has been with me by my side all those years and always will be 💜 #thepowerofmusic
I concur 100%. This is frigging brilliant!
Totally agree. In today’s music it’s extremely rare when such brilliant music is happening. I just embrace it and I’m now buying every vinyl records from churches and the cure.
@Jeff B no. modern music is doomed already. But that one song is pretty refreshing.
@Jeff B You cannot be pretentious when your name is Robert Smith this guy has been around for 50 years and I can assure you this guy is not pretending. Now there are two sides of music the main stream and the alternative music. In this forum we are discussing a beautiful song from the main stream Bob music and we are embracing the fact that finally there is something good coming. We understand pop music most of the time is garbage that is true but this is a very beautiful song you don’t have to agree with us. If I want to listen to alternative all underground music I know where to look. And most of the time I listen to my own compositions now you can call me a pretentious.
This is absolutely insane for me. I grew up listening to both CHVRCHES and The Cure and if you told little me they could collab I would go insane. This song is SPECTACTULAR and I love you all

It's a great combination of everything, I absolutely love it and think the same you said it's wowza

Dude, same! I've listened to the song more than 300 times since it was released and it still happens every single time. This song is incredible.
Robert Smith is The Cure, and CHVRCHES knew how to revive his style (those guitarr effects), representing an entire generation that grew up with his music ... spreading to all those young people even without the need for social networks that did not exist in his time, you are Great
The outro to this song is the most gorgeous thing they've ever done. I can't believe how good this is.
On repeat, on repeat!
Robert you are always the one. The girl is also good!
This songs had that between 80's and 90's vibe but still fresh.
It reminds me of Depeche Mode's violator/faith and devotion eras
@@chloemunro9723 The 80's and 90's are offended.
Well you do have The Cure's Robert Smtih who was popular in that era
This song shows CHVRCHES have come a long way. The choice of Robert Smith for this duet couldn't have been as powerful with anyone else. That outro fade, phenomenal. And I love that Robert had plenty of solo parts. People may say this is a new sound for them, but it's actually closer to the earlier, darker material of "Recover" days.🤟🤟🤟😎
I love the dark undertones of this song. I described it to my sister as Recover pt. 2 with a Cure inspired outro.
100%
I fully agree - that outro fade, as you call it, is magnificent. I very much love how this song sounds. It's a masterpiece.
Science and visions another example
Very much so. Much darker like The Bones of What You Believe.
Should have been number 1
Omg robert smith collaborated for electronic music before my friends didnt believe it and it happened again,so cosmic
That ending reminds me to many songs of The Cure, that must be an idea of Robert, the long instrumental end, nice song
So true. Pleasantly surprised and nostalgically enjoyable at the same time. I love the instrumentals at the end.
It feels like it has finger prints on it does it? - but credit to the whole band for making it seem so natural and right. What a great song.
brilliant ending and reminds me of not only Cure songs, but tracks from the early 90s, maybe even 80s, that had the longer outro. I saw an interview where Robert Smith thought he might have been getting in the way with his vocals, I don't think he needs to worry about that, he did great job. Really good track and i'm sure it will do well.
I feel like the structure of this song has Robert’s fingerprints all over them.
totally agreed, the epic ending gothik guitar sound of the evergreen Cure
Robert Smith seems like such a cool guy, so many of the "older legendary" artists would just phone something like this in but he kills it like he does in every colab I've heard him in

It's the haunting voice of Robert Smith. It's familiar and new and comforting and sad. He just taps into everyone's soul.
Even the video has a feel for the 80s-in camera tricks, static, flickering video, and a singer with a microphone.
This song rings a bell, it resembles some other song which I totally can't recall.
