I like this song. But, I don't think it's their best. Hopefully you've taken the time to listen to more JP. Rob has great range in my uneducated opinion........I just went to your channel. I see that you have listened to more. I'll have to check out the videos, to see if you agree! Lol
If you would have listened to Electric Eye or Devil's Child you would have broken a million views. This speed metal junk with the flashing lights and quadruple kick drums was just a reaction to Iron Maiden etc., trying to go faster and scream louder than everybody else. I felt like this album was was a little desperate, and Rob quit after it. That said, I could watch your reaction to a starter replacement on a Kia Sorento and it would be delightful.

That's what happened to me back in 2019
So my brother is a elementary/Jr. High music teacher and is currently getting them ready for their Christmas concerts. Some of the boys were given parts to sing in falsetto and they didn't want to do it because "falsetto isn't cool and is for girls". He told them that falsetto is very cool and very manly and some of the best metal singers are masters of falsetto. They didn't believe him so he showed them painkiller. They ended up "practicing the hell out of their parts" afterwards lol.

He worked on a theater but as assistant for some stuff.
So from what I understand he never sang with "proper" technique, but he has such a monstrous voice that for his whole career he was just pushing his vocal cords and still kept his voice somehow... Live show recordings show how his chords become more and more exhausted with each song, and he doesn't even warm his chords up...

Painkiller is the most viewed Judas Priest music video, their most critically acclaimed song and their second-most streamed song on Spotify. If you're just a casual metal listener wanting to hear Judas Priest, you're most likely to stumble on Painkiller instead of Breaking The Law or You've Got Another Thing Comin'

Rob Halford has one of the MOST Distinctive metal vocals out there, you hear his voice and you instantly know it's him.
I have respect for this woman. Getting into Judas Priest with painkiller being your first song takes a lot of heart.
Fun fact: Rob Halford apparently vocalizes a lot of guitar lines during the writing process, so some of Priest's riffs are literally Halford vocal lines translated to the guitar.

Dave Mustaine sang almost every single note of Marty Friedman's guitar solos, and wrote the majority of Nick's [Menza] drum parts, and Also wrote almost every bass note that [David] Ellefson played.

Isn't it a beautiful experience watching a metal head being born. So heart warming . It never gets old!
I LOVE how in the ending her expressions clearly went from attention to interest, and then in sequence: admiration, fun, surprise, confusion and disbelief. And the switch in expression are so crystal clear you can timestamp them.
I think what it identifies for some if not most viewers...complete open-mindedness and the ability to appreciate.

I am actively watching the comments, and have Kirk/Paolo polling the next couple Judas Priest songs I analyze. I think his range has a lot to offer, so I'm not giving up!

@@TheCharismaticVoice there are a lot of great suggestions all throughout the comments. I think once you hear more of what he usually sounds like you'll want to hear more. I will say that I like painkiller, but I can see why you were so-so on it. Can't wait to see your next one.
Also, you should check out some of Tim (Ripper) Owens judas priest vocals. He replaced Rob while he was out and was really good too! The movie rockstar is based extremely loosely on Owens/priest. He sang for a priest tribute band and they recruited him from. The rest of the story is bogus, but it was inspired by this incident. Perhaps you can compare a few songs sang by both?

There is no further words to describe how amazing this song is. The amount of times I have listened to this song, it never gets old and forever will be beyond a masterpiece. This was the only song that ever actually caused me pain in my ears at a live show. He hit one of the screams and I thought my left ear was bleeding. That was on Halloween in 1990, and that ear was never quite the same again.
It was worth it, though-fantastic show.
@Atman Gotango I don’t like the pits, but there have still been moments. I’ll never forget being accidentally clotheslined at that same show. That hurt. A lot.
But, yeah-I’ve never had a metal head be negative to my kids at shows. Not once.
Went to a judas priest show as well. The super long high-pitched scream at the end of Painkiller gave me a headache 15 seconds in. Absolutely loved that show

I got this album for Christmas when it was released. All my parent's really knew about my music was I liked metal. I put the CD in and it BLEW ME AWAY. This was so different than earlier Priest. Like a rebirth.

"I almost expected something more mellow" this was Judas Priest's response to the thrash metal bands of the day slowing down. They quite literally said "hold my beer" and fucked shit up.
which was their first truly aggressive album of the decade out of doing a bit more commercial friendly albums since British Steel. Thing is most of the Thrash bands weren't slowing down until the early 90s, or after this album. Now the aggression of Jugulator for sure stood out in 97 precisely because Thrash was dead, and Alt Rock and NuMetal were on the rise. This was literally them simply regaining their edge after bands like Maiden, Slayer, etc stole some of their thunder. Painkiller, Sad Wings and Sin after Sin are IMO, their best albums.
And they do have pretty mellow stuff, like Last Rose of Summer - but this was a statement they wanted to make
They toured with Megadeth on this album. Rust in Peace/Painkiller in '91. I got to hear Holy Wars and Painkiller, live, in the same night.

Painkiller is easily in my top 5 favourite metal songs of all time. What an absolute onslaught of power! Rob's massive vocals, the fantastic guitars and bass, and the drums, oh god the drums!
It's unbelievable that Richie Faulkner actually managed to play that solo completely clean and without missing a single note while his aorta burst and his heart was literally gushing blood. A totally underrated guitarist, the guy is a legend.

Painkiller is one of my favorite songs people react to because so many people are just sitting there going "wow people can do that with their voices?"
My God your reactions are priceless! Rob doesn’t always sing in that range for the whole song like this one - I think the entire point of this song was to be as ridiculous and over the top as possible. But he has a powerful lower range as well (which hardly came into play here.) Great metal singer - he’s a legend for a reason.
My dad told me when PAINKILLER album came up back in 1990 it caught everybody off guard; even Judas Priest fans didn't expect to be hit like this...
With this song and this album, the band took the heavy metal to the category of the fine arts.

Definitely. When this came out one would expect a way seated back attitude from a band that had already been around for 20+ years. But they set metal to a new beginning. This was a game changer.

Yeah, it was pretty out of nowhere. They had cooled down their sound prior to this (Livin' After Midight, etc.), this blew people away (side note:fuck, I'm old)
Scorpions, with the exception of pop music, had the same footprint as Judas. Ac/DC too. However, in this song, Judas took the metal lead two laps ahead of their compadres, astonishing even the thrashers, already big at the time, who lived in fear of the grunge counter-coup from the record companies (which had its value...). But, on top of that, surfing alone on the blue wave of metal and rock, creative pearls like The Cult, Ministry, Dark Angel, Megadeth and the great Nuclear Assault... the leftovers of that were pop art and bad boys band, sponsored and a lot , but, a lot of redoing.
This is like being introduced to swimming by being dropped from an airplane in the middle of the ocean without a life jacket. This is probably one of the hardest and fastest songs in their catalog.
And not so coincidentally, their best (in my opinion of course, never cared much for most of their songs, but this one slays).

As much as I love Painkiller, it's not the best way to introduce someone to Judas Priest, especially if they've never heard Metal before.
Victim of Changes, Diamonds and Rust, Beyond the Realms of Death, Touch of Evil, and You've Got Another Thing Coming are much better choices for that.
@@megadev9099 this was my first encounter with JP and this is still my favorite from them, but then I'm more a death/thrash metal guy so the heavier, the better basically. The main riff in this just makes my neck twitch, so good.
When you look at every single sub-genre of metal throughout the decades, taking the extremes of the likes of doom metal or sludge metal etc all the way up to the other extreme of speed metal, black metal, industrial etc. "Painkiller" is without a doubt the most perfect metal song and album. Everything is on point. I mean, when you have Death and Chuck Schuldiner paying tribute when covering Painkiller, you know how awesome it is.
I like the sentiment of "I don't know if I like his voice, but I'm impressed by it". Respecting talent when you see it but holding true to your tastes.

Dont forget Ozzy! Listen back and you'll realize what a great and flexible vocalist he was in the early days, but definitely a huge metal style. His vocals on the live video, singing "Changes" shows just what a rock solid vocalist he really was when he was in his prime.

Victim of Changes on the live Unleashed in the East is a true representation of Rob’s voice and range. He shows his multiple octave range, uses all the registers, sings clean & dirty, and honestly hits notes only dogs can comprehend.

The Painkiller album is what would be considered a concept album, with every song related to each other and telling a story in full. I always thought it would have been awesome if somehow they could have worked out a cheesy 1980s type horror movie based on the album. Never happened though.

1976’s “Victim of Changes” is one song that portrays Rob Halford’s most pure, clean, operatic voice. His high notes were so smooth and distortion-free. It’s interesting to compare that vocal style to how his voice has changed album after album.

One of Priest's all killer no filler albums. Both "Leather Rebel" and "Hell Patrol" from this release are worth a closer look.
No filler really defines the entire album perfectly. Even the bonus track of "Living Bad Dreams" is fantastic.
14:10 That guitar section gives me goosebumps everytime, so seeing the look on your face when you hear it makes me feel not alone in the recognition of the uniqueness of that sound.
So, as a 40 year Priest fan I can say that while this is a quintessential Priest song, it is NOT representative of either, their music or of Rob's vocals overall. This song is and was designed to be a metal assault.
Rob has a huge range and is one of the icons of metal. He's known as the Metal God. Painkiller is a very different album than the rest, style wise. It was released in the early 90's and has a distinctive sound. Do not let this song deter you from exploring other Priest music, as I think that you will find his singing voice far different and more interesting than this song portrays.
I would recommend three songs: "Desert Plains" , "Fever" and "Dreamer Deceiver (BBC Performance)"
They finally broke through with this album. Hands down their best

I actually agree with this. Songs like 'Beyond The Realms of Death' (another I'd love to hear TCV react to!) encapsulates more of his actual range and ability, in my opinion. 'Painkiller' is a great track but there is far more to them, and to Rob, than this.

They are incredible together. I say this, there are a lot of "metal" bands out there. You could say to 99% of them, "You'll never be as good as Judas Priest".
Glenn Tipton is heavily steeped in classical and that really shines in this masterpiece. And Scott Travis...what a debut for him!
I love how Rob occasionally rolls an "r". Small thing, but it really adds to the vocals.

Very different voices, and I'd hate to compare them, but Rob might have the higher notes. His talent as a vocalist is absolutely next level. He has range when it comes to vocal style, too.

This tune was initially demoed on a drum machine, requirements of the drummer vacancy being to be able to play it modern double bass style. ScottTravis bought a load to the band.
I liked her evaluation of his vocals, but only to an extent. This is a Thrash Metal song & really has no beat, nor theme to it until nearly the end. Thru the first couple of verses, Halford sounds like a kid screaming "I Want My Coco Puffs". I think it was a but too much for any fan used to digest. Freewheel Burning was as heavy, but had both a better rhythm & better quality lead vocals, for a heavier theme on their songs.

As a metal fan, I am pleased to see how you appreciate the skill even though you don't necessarily like the sound. I wish more people could listen to music like that and not just calling it "noise". Metal musicians are often highly skilled, but average mainstream listeners don't have the ability to recognise it.

But honestly there some parts of metal that are just screaming around and load and I say this as a big metal fan but large parts of especially death and black metal is just wierd and load. Like many of them have talent but it's hard to listen to.
I’m reading a lot of words in these comments and their replies that strongly suggests that you’re just trying to explain away what you just don’t get. Like a critic who prefers Dogs Playing Poker and with a straight face tells you that Picasso or Van Gogh may have skills but that doesn’t mean it’s inherently good. Mostly it’s just weird load from his perspective. Reminds me of the scene in Amadeus where the Emperor tells Mozart that there are too many notes for the Royal ear.

Agreed. TCV is the first of this type of video that I’ve seen, but I did try some other voice coaches etc and just found that their videos weren’t nearly as informative or entertaining. I feel like she is really sincere and honest in her analogies.
Thank you! I will always be honest on this channel and get a lot of comments from people that don't believe. It is what it is. I have, however, decided not to release certain videos because after hearing the song/artist I don't think it aligns with my vision of the channel, or I just have nothing positive to say. I love Priest, I don't think this is a great representation of Halford. Victim of Changes and Exciter definitely have better vocal performances.
Victim of Changes or Screaming for Vengeance better demonstrate his vocal ability.
I so love this. Your expression as you listened, and then your eventual laughter to how much you were clearing enjoying this masterpiece is classic. I remember hearing this for the first time and was utterly blown away. My favorite metal tune by a landslide. Just a brain melting endeavor.

They are an early 70s/80s band, but this song was made in the early 90s to revitalize the band and keep their popularity going. It did a very good job and helped in defining future metal music.

Well, its also about a Dude, but yeah,, My first exposure to Priest was the Video Premier for Painkiller and I got hooked, but it took me a long time to get into their older stuff, then I heard Unleashed in the East. FINALLY! a recording of the older stuff without an engineer taming the hell out of them and at a point when Metal guitar distortion was really taking off. not fuzz, but real distortion and Overdrives! Anyway, She does a Video of Victim of CHanges Live at Us 83, but the UITE performance is ridiculous! Unleashed in the East and Live After Death are the two best live albums ever!

Yes. Painkiller was the roaring reclamation of Priest as the Metal Gods they are after their late 80s offerings (Turbo/Ram It Down), which experimented with synth guitars and the more glam rock influence of the time. They also introduced new drummer Scott Travis amazingly with the drum solo intro.
I knew it as soon as I heard the drum solo introduction, that Judas Priest were back and ready to compete with Metallica. TRAVIS IS AN OUTSTANDING DRUMMER!!

That's one of my favorite metal songs ever, the guitar riff at the beggining is absolutely headbanging, the drums are well balanced and intense but they don't overflow all the song and the voice is just legendary and iconic
Rob Halfords trademark was being able to scream in three octaves. As an aside. Early in their musical career they covered Joan baez's diamonds and rust. I have been a Judas Priest fan since the very late 70s. I used to eat at this very trendy Hole in the Wall Restaurant. Called Dan's select Foods. They had a folk singer at the place. Who basically sang throbbing versions of the Irish Rover's standards. The place was deserted one night and I brought in the cassette with diamonds and rust. She was familiar with the song. She asked me my favorite which at the time was breakin' the law. When my birthday came around she played me an unplugged instrumental version of that song. A weird sort of symmetry. Judas Priest put diamonds and rust to electric guitars, and Rob Halfords inimitable scream. She did the exact reverse with breaking the law. It was glorious.

I never really liked Painkiller, as the drums were out of control. Their earlier drummers pretty much kept a beat while Ken & Glen did their solos. Victim was a far more both a constructive & creative song..
Victim of changes is a must. Painkiller is good but victim of changes era is my favorite.

I got a free ticket to a Rush concert in 78'. The opening act was a band I never heard of..."Judas Priest." When Priest hit the stage running, I was floored. After Priest left the stage, watching Rush do their thing was like watching a thumb-wrestling match after an MMA brawl. The very next day I went to Tower Records and bought Priest's albums. Even in my 60's now, Priest is still my go-to music for working out.
Was at a Priest show in the mid 80’s. My hearing was shot for 3 days afterwards. Great show, the tinnitus always brings back memories. 😅

Beyond The Realms Of Death. Rob Halford isn´t just aggressive and in your face singing, he is whatever you want. From lows to highs and vice versa, everything sounds just fine. But of course, that piercing tone in his voice which Painkiller so good showcased, is something only he has, it´s unique and instantly HIM. Even if you didn´t like it, you appreciated it !

This isn't Rob Halford's only "singing voice". He changes is a lot from song to song and album to album. He's even done some slightly "opera-esque" vocals on their Nostradamus album. Very diverse singer.
YES! Nostradamus should be playing everywhere during this COVID pandemic. Why they haven’t re-released it this last year is beyond me! Totally under-rated effort

And very good energetic singer, last time I saw them live was in like 2010-11 and he was around 60 at the time I think and he pretty much did the entire gig like he's in his 20s, it was non-stop energetic performance, in particular when they played Living After Midnight.
