Is the Sonic Redesign Really Cowering to Fans?

Sonic the Hedgehog has turned out not only to be a good performing video game movie, but also fairly solid and enjoyable in its own right. Good thing they wised up and listened to the brilliant fans, right? Well maybe... Let's see if the studio actually lacks a spine, or if there's more going on here...

I agree with your overall message that sometimes, listening to fan outcry is the right thing to do, and sometimes it’s not. However, I think your use of Rey’s origins in the Star Wars sequel trilogy is a bad example to get your point across. Fans weren’t upset with the declaration of her as a nobody in Episode 8 because it contradicted their theories and speculation. They were upset because it contradicted the build-up that Disney did for her in Episode 7, and because it flew in the face of established Star Wars lore. The prequel trilogy establishes that in order to be as strong as Rey is in the Force, you have to come from a very powerful Force-using bloodline. Also, Episode 7 built her up to be connected to someone big and important by asking three times who she is. It’s a fairly common artistic movie directing/writing choice. In that respect, Episode 8 is a bad adaptation of the source material, or a sequel that deviates too much from the source material without warning. So while the family connection they gave her in Episode 9 is a clear sign that they didn’t have a plan going in and were rushing to fit two movies into one, it was still a better answer to the setup in Episode 7 than it would have been if they had stuck with the “Rey is a nobody” thing from Episode 8.
Now, if we want to talk about inappropriate fan service in Episode 9, that kiss between two main characters after the final battle would’ve been a perfect example...
