No matter anyone's feelings about the movie, I think we can all agree that, "I have come back from Hell to kill you," is a badass thing to say to someone.
“I came back from hell to ________” sounds like a line to use to. That or variations on it. Came from, came back from, through hell, anything that is hell followed by an action (maybe some kind of social interaction) sounds nice
Funnily enough, there was a variation of it in The Favorite.
Put that on a business card. You can use it to really screw with people.

I love how the entire movie is building up to Scorpion saying his famous line, which is literally the only line in the movie he speaks in English for some random reason.
They have English classes in Hell. Scorpion had a lot of time to pass.

@@MattAlbie an ancient Chinese ninja who we know speaks multiple languages. The first scene established he spoke Chinese and Japanese. He's spent hundreds of years in Outworld where Shang Tsung speaks multiple languages, English being one; it's more reasonable to believe he speaks English than it is for Scorpion. That being said, I stand by my head cannon, which is the same as the original replier, hell has great language classes 😜
This film is definitely at its best when it tries to be Mortal Kombat rather than a movie.
Yeah but even the games has great story telling. Rather than following that they made a new character that doesn't fit to the lore it self. I would rather want to see Sonya and Jax POV until they discover the mortal combat than the new guy. IT was just so random when the Games had a better story telling. NGL I imagine a plot from the game will be made into a movie. I am not expecting it to be great cause if I just want death scene I would just play the game. It is just a missed opportunity to make the lore's into movies.

the problem is the cut scenes from the games are actually much better movie, with better plot, better characters, better fight, better CGI.

I love how the “ice gun” scene is reframed in an interesting way in the movie.. SubZero actually pauses and stares at the gun because he doesn’t know what it is. He’s an ancient warrior, but still a warrior and can obviously tell it’s a weapon of some kind, but has no clue how it works.. he looks genuinely intrigued like “oh shit... little metal balls... how does this work? What a weird bow...” lol

I think it seemed ok for me, Cole Young in a way is like a newbie who newly enters the world of mortal kombat, so it works ok.

To be fair if it isn’t stated aloud that Cole can’t speak or understand Japanese, there is no reason to think he can’t. They made a point early in the movie that scorpion didn’t know what sub zero was saying in Chinese. Since Cole made no comment about not knowing Japanese it is safer to assume he knows Japanese than he doesn’t.
I mean Cole has a noticeable accent throughout the movie it wouldnt be a stretch to say he understands it

I had a mini heart attack at the beginning because I was scared something was going to happen to the little baby girl. (Recently had my first son) so seeing Raiden save her made me cry. Then I instantly wanted to see like a comic of showing Raiden taking care of a baby lol

I truly loved this movie. It has the characters we love, it doesn't take itself too seriously and the main plot is original. I really enjoyed watching this with my brothers.

As someone who was in the martial arts in the 90’s and so wanted the original movies to be good martial arts movies....and was horribly disappointed...I truly liked this movie. As did my 20 y/o son. Though I did ask him if Cole spoke Japanese at the end as that plot hole stuck out to me. But it was a fun ride, with waaaaaaay less cheese than the 90’s films. The only thing I didn’t appreciate was the sidelining of Sonya through most of the movie. I don’t get why she didn’t have a marking, so couldn’t train with the guys. She’s a badass who had already kicked Kano’s butt. So I found the whole ‘you’d be a liability’ annoying.

I mainly had issues with Cole as the lead here, he wasn’t nearly as interesting as the other characters. Also, I felt like they spent too much time on exposition and not enough on the fights, what we were all really here for anyway.
I had no problem with Cole. He served his purpose as relating back to Scorpion. I'd love to see how his character changes in a sequel

The opening scene, Kano, Sub-Zero being a horror movie monster, Kung Lao's fatality move and the final battle between Scorpion and Sub-Zero made this movie worth the HBO Max subscription. I like the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie more because nostalgia but I was still entertained by this movie and hope they get the greenlight for a sequel.
I really hope so. I think a good sequel will end up making this movie better. Imo, it's a great intro video to a franchise, but not very strong as a stand alone. The director is signed on for 4 films, but that only matters if WB greenlights a sequel.
I didn't have the best expectations going in, but I agree with everything you said.

I'd take an hbo max series with each season explaining a group of character's back stories. Like Scorpion and Subzero, Jax and Sonya, Lui Kang and Kung Lao and Kano and Kabal
I'd be up for this kind of approach as a mini series rather than a full movie. There's so many characters on the roster, so to take all of it and try to cram it into 2 hours just doesn't work.
Man, entire season exploring Scorpion vs Sub Zero? That sounds so badass. I mean, we can get their clans explored, build up their rivalry, show Hanzo in hell and Bi Han turning into Sub Zero. So sad they didn't go with that.
Cole as a character isn't all that cool. But you know who is cool? Sub-Zero.

i knew that if this movie tried to take itself too seriously, all the catchphrases and over the top names and fatalities would feel out of place. i like that they more or less embraced the cheesiness while still giving the characters real stakes and moments to shine, especially Kung Lao and Scorpion!
100000%. We needed this cheese gore fest. Too many movies trying to be bigger than their britches and not knowing what they are (*cough* justice league *cough*)
I agree! I LOVE Mortal Kombat, but I will be the first to admit that, while it was fun, the '95 film was mostly a cheesefest pandering strictly to the gamers. It was pretty bad as an actual film when it first came out (but fun!), and it hasn't asked well. This one kept the cheese, but intermingled it in a way that works for audiences as a whole, and still makes the gamers giggle in satisfaction imo.

I saw this in theaters yesterday with some friends and we had a fun time! Some people seem to forget that the movie is based off a game that is ridiculously out there and are complaining about the action being unrealistic and of course it is. In the game, the characters are brutalized and get up every time until a fatality. I do agree that it felt rushed. It was 2 hrs and it went by pretty fast for me. After the first two movies, my expectations were low but once I found out it had an R-rating I got pretty excited and I think it's come a long way since the 1995 version. Hopefully they clean it up with the characters and stray away from the quick cut fight scenes. I enjoyed it overall and look forward to what comes next!

I mean the third game had finishers that turn your opponent into animals or BABIES.
The only problem I really had with the film was Coles underdevelopment. He seemed to be surrounded around Tropes to the degree it started to become uninteresting following Cole’s character. For example the fact that Coles family serves no purpose whatsoever other than to be put in danger thus leading the powerless protagonist to unlock his inner power. Which in turn plays apart of the whole “if he doesn’t get his powers we lose” narrative surrounding the tournament.
Also the time restriction doesn’t do it any justice. I hoped it would slow down or at least adjust in pacing.
“Your death has no worth” is probably my favorite line from the movie. I had a blast watching it. The biggest thing that bothered me was that there was no tournament.
Saw the thumbnail and thought to myself “ Oohh I gotta watch my friend Amanda’s new video!”.... I should probably try to get out of the house more

They really shafted Cole, they gave him no depth or character development. It's like they didn't fully commit to either focusing on just known characters or focusing on the new guy getting tossed in. But it was a fun watch, still not over Kung Lao though.
You know what I would have done?
Instead of bringing new characters, I would give forgotten/scrapped/mentioned/non-canon minor characters from comic books, defenders of the realms, conquest, films even games - moments for them to shine. I mean I'm doing this for my fanfics.

Ohh, have I got a present for you. There's a whole slew of ninja movies from the 80s. There's at least Shadow of the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, Ninja 3, and a litter of American Ninjas, which are interesting in that the main actor left the series after a few movies, but they kept the character and got a different actor. Then the old main actor comes back as a different character and it isn't addressed in any way. It's great!
then there's all those Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris movies.
I think there are even more, but I can't remember all of them.

Sometimes you want to see a deep introspective look at the effects of childhood trauma. Sometimes you want to see someone shank a fool with their own blood. Both feelings are equally valid.

I'm good with the ass kickery. The first part of the movie had all the blood that was nowhere to be found in the first 2 movies. To be fair tho, those movies were for kids cause MK was considered uber effing awesome by younger kids back. Thankfully they made this for us adults that were kids when the other two movies came out. Also, Melina was my fave character to play with and we only got a nanosecond of her face doing its thing. And why was she NOT SEXY? She had THE BRICK HOUSE PACKAGE and didn't even try to give her any purple make her look like Melina. I really loved the movie tho...

They did my main man Kung Lao dirty. He doesn't even make it to the tournament? Wtf?! And also, Cole was a completely unnecessary character. Oh, he's a 'chosen one' character? We already had one of those, his name is Liu Kang.
Liu was so well cast too, just to have his spotlight stolen by by a bland, forgettable character like Cole
100% reckon he’ll be brought back as a reverent or something. You don’t get an expert like Max Huang, who is perfect for Kung, and not use him. Same with Kano.
This movie sparked so much joy! I honestly haven't had this much fun in ages. It's big, it's dumb, it had the jargon, and I appreciate that it is trying to do something a little different. There's already a straight lore adaptation happening with "Scorpion's Revenge" so having something new for the live action kinda works for me. I'm really hoping we get a sequel and than the editing improves to some more long shots so we can see more of that clean choreography.

I don't watch a lot of movies, especially popcorn fare, because something died in me long ago but I went into this looking for mindless videogame nostalgia and was very happy with it. I remember seeing the first one in 1995 in North Chicago and it was a great time.
I just watched it last night and I LOVED it. My bf said they added characters for no reason (since they have do many in games), but I'm hoping for many sequels.

I’m so glad that I subbed to Amanda like, pre- quarantine because she just referenced a “neature” moment and I’m so so glad and proud of her.
The sequel needs to be 2 hours of only Sub Zero fighting Scorpion, while Kano yells insults at them.
And Cole dies in the first five minutes.
For me, I had fun for this movie. Though I kinda hate the story because it is kinda weak(but not the Hanzo-BiHan rivalry because it was very cool!) but I love the fatalities and other moves that they showed up(RESPECT!). Also maybe fans were upset our Boi Johnny Cage wasn't there but I didn't expect that the sequel will be focus about him(as the producer said so). Another thing, I think this movie is a Pre-Tournament from the MK(since Shang Tsung wanted to kill all the Earthrealms champions so that Outworld will invade it). Hopefully they will continue to develop this story(while adding some bunch of important characters there)
Finally someone who opinion I appreciate saying that also like this movie.

I loved the fight between Kano and Sonya Blade in the trailer home. It seemed very inspired by the fight between the Bride and Elle Driver in Budd’s trailer in Kill Bill vol. 2
Mortal Kombat was fun, not the best though. However, "Nobody" is maybe my favorite movie of this year so far.
Still have to catch it sadly
@@AmandaTheJedi If I was the director of this movie, I would have references from MortalKombat 9, we need klassic characters like Kitana, Baraka, Johnny Cage, Sindel, Shao Kahn, Ermac, Jade, Skarlet, Kenshi, Kintaro, Smoke, Cyrax, Sektor, Quan Chi, Sheeva, Nightwolf, Shinnok and Rain. Also we don’t need any new character, and Warner Bros should focus on personal vendetta between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

I like to think Mortal Kombat is just one of those fun blockbusters that you could turn your brain off. Maybe it also helps that I’m not a big MK fan and have very minimal knowledge of the lore.
Ether way I still enjoyed it and hope we get sequels that are more polished.

I only came for Scorpion, Kung Lao and Liu kang. Everybody else was irrelevant. Also, i think my issue was that this was technically a "origin story" movie. We never really got the "Mortal Kombat" as in the tournament or any of the only popular characters. HOWEVER i still loved it; the swift grace of fight moves made me happy

Glad to hear this is fun as the only bit I've seen is the intro scene in Japan with Hanzo and Sub Zero so I had no idea what the rest of the film was going to be like. It's just a shame the cinemas are shut in the UK at the moment and we don't have HBO Max in the UK.
I'm pretty sure how Scorpion was summoned because cole's blood was mixed with scorpion on the tool🤷♀️ . But I enjoyed it but yeah as player of the games An audience proxy character is unnecessary.

The moment you said, “I remember my parents had some of the games...” made me feel so very old. I used to play this with my friend’s brother and at the arcade. And saw both movies when they came out. Was there opening weekend for Mortal Kombat, dragged my best friend... AND I was on dance team in HS and a friend and I choreographed a dance to the MK soundtrack song we performed it and the school loved it. I have no idea why, I can tell you right now no one in that school saw that movie lol.

Thanks for this honest review. Looks like a fun movie! I too, love green and tried playing Jade for that reason alone, that and I love the staff irl. But I was only good with Sindel and Sonya. First game, was a button masher but then I learned to do both of them really well. Then I got out of playing video games till the Wii. Mortal Kombat 11 is when I finally got back into the games!
This was such a fun movie, I will definitely rewatch it and I definitely hope a sequel happens
we just saw this movie today. i really enjoyed it. i went i expecting it to be a video game movie, and that's what we got. i would for sure see the sequel if they end up making one.

I loved this move! It was just the right amount of everything. Though I do wish it was just a few min longer like you said for som of the other last battle scenes.
I'm still going to watch this movie and I think you got me in the right mood for that: to expect a cheesy and committed to the cheesy tournament movie

Great review as usual! I agree that it was fine, people just need to relax and enjoy it for what it is. I really do hope we can get the sequel cause Noob Saibot has been my favorite character since he was introduced.
