  • This took me a lot longer to clean and prep than I'd expected!
By the time I got through with this, the retail editions have already started to pop up in distribution!
The core set has a lot more tiles and walls to work with, but no scatter terrain and scenery bits. The starter set has a lot less walls and floors, but a slew of decorative pieces to populate your rooms with- take your pick which is more versatile for you.
This stuff is pretty solid once you've got it all cleaned up and prepped.
I feel the Dungeons & Lasers is much more geared toward smaller scale setups- RPGs or small scale skirmishes like Kill Team or any variety of rulesets would work great for these. Obviously it all being indoors probably helps that.
The Rampart stuff is what you want if you're building a ruined town and need lots of cover to block tanks and the like.
Check out their lines of terrain and games here-

Yeah, thick... my fave is the battlesystems stuff. I use it for space stations and bases... ships I use tiles like star saga or printed maps of ship layouts... makes it easier to move minis without walls

I am TERRIBLE at building Battlesystems stuff. It should be more intuitive for me but I end up just completely lost with it.
I've been trying to finish a video on it for close to a year and finally gave up and dumped it on Sparkletrout, who promptly figured it out in a few minutes. UGH.

According to their site they started selling July 29th, so should be in the distribution net by now. Now if my FLGS will just show some common sense and stock the damn things.
Certainly seem to be more sensibly designed than the similar Mantic terrain, albeit not quite as fluid about using walls for floors and vice versa.

I like them. I may have to add those to the list.
I think a decent hobby saw would leave less to clean on those long straight pieces.

I'd use mine... if I knew where I left it!
If these sets get in regular distribution as well, with the usual retailer discounts, then I think it really is a good deal!
The rooms themselves are at almost impulse purchase prices.

Reminds me of something from the Alien movies.

This is the first that i have heard of the retail version being different than what was offered in the ks version. Im impatiently awaiting my own parcel from Archon, being delayed and lost by good ol fedex, so ive been stalking dungeons and lasers content pretty obsessively. Ill have to look specifically on this new starter. Thanks for the heads up on this development.

Yeah, the retail versions will be a bit different but also the price reflects that a bit from what I've seen trickling out.
A good chunk of the dragon kits have also been released alongside the scifi rooms.
Not that I've started painting mine yet...

Space Hulk too. And IIRC there was supposed to be a new edition of the old 90s Legions of Steel game soon-ish, which was Space Hulk's closest competition back in the day.

Legions of Steel were going to be releasing their skirmish rules soon. I believe I saw a revision of them the other day. Another good use for these tiles!

The thing I get curious about with a set like this: would you paint all the individual pieces and then be able to fully customize your scifi dungeon (and spend a while assembling it before play), or would you construct and paint some rooms (like a med-lab, or barracks, or something) and some corridors to fit together later, to cut down on assembly time?

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  Před 3 lety +1

I'll probably do like I've done with my deadzone terrain (which still needs paint naturally). Have it somewhat prebuilt into specific configurations I know I'll probably use. Probably two or three half rooms, paint those, possibly glue them, and seal it all so it's somewhat ready to just drop on the table and play.

This stuff is dangerous. I know it'll never be enough until I build a full hive city and devote a bedroom to it
Ngl the fountain goes weirdly well with scifi industrial terrain for a 40k look. Is that terrain crate?

Just wondering if you could turn the layout upside down to make modular buildings? Do they look okay?

The newer sets are designed for just that, particularly the Woodhaven series of scenery.
Of which I have a good chunk... and haven't gotten around to even playing with it yet!
