- I came across an advertisement for an old GT BMX for sale by chance. Despite the mishmash of components from different eras, it caught my interest. It brought back memories of my GT Performer from my teenage years in the mid-eighties.
I didn´t ride like the Pro´s in the 80´s, for sure, but i loved racing and showing off my freestylin´ both in public and in the backyard and for over 5 years, my Friends and I were in BMX-heaven...
In the 80s, in my country, GT offered three choices for their freestyle bikes, all based on the same frame and fork set:
1. The Performer with "standard" components
2. The Pro Performer with upgraded components
3. and the Pro Performer, named "Pro Freestyle", consisting only of the frame and fork set, allowing you to customize your bike with preferred components and within your budget.
In 1987 GT introduced their new freestyle bike with a redesigned frame and fork set. A few years later, the old Performer models went on sale in my country. I believe that's when this bike was assembled, in the early 90s, using the Pro Performer frame and fork set, enabling the builder to save on the frame and fork set and instead invest in the coolest components of that time-like the Haro Group 1, Haro Fusion, Peregrine Q-bars, Odyssey VPX, and more.
The bike was in somewhat rusty and in generally poor condition when i acquired it.
With a limited source of supply of NOS old school components where I live, I decided on a partial restoration to occasional rider condition, leaving the GT with its original vintage finish and later-on components.
The Bash Guard, though never used, was added for display purposes only.
Various components like the Bash Guard, Chain wheel, Stem, Pedals, Levers, and Brakes were polished with AUTOSOL.
Pedals were fitted with new Ball bearings. Back in the late eighties I saw this amazing Odyssey advertise at the local bike shop... I simply just had to own a pair of VPX pedals.
Nuts, Bolts and Washers were all cleaned in a 1:10 Citric acid bath solution for about 24 hours.
The wheels were soaked for 48 hours in a 1:20 Citric acid bath solution, polished with AUTOSOLTM and inner rims were coated with rust prohibiting paint.
The Handlebar was soaked for 48 hours in a 1:10 Citric acid bath solution and inner pipes were coated with rust prohibiting paint.
The tires where unfortunately brittle and not suitable for riding.
The Haro tires will therefor soon be replaced with a pair of Odyssey Path K-Lyte Tan walls 20 x 1.85.
...Or if possible, a NOS pair of Odyssey Barefoot... In the meantime, a pair of new GT tires
will have do.
Seat post, Seat, Pegs and Brake pads are all NOS.
Grips are new school until I can decide which Grips to buy. - Zábava
Uff qué hermosa bicicleta 😘👍 👏👏
Gracias ala orden
Very cool!
Nice 👍
Great build...I don't think you were trying to make everything original...just wanted to build the bike...it's beautiful
Well, I miss The old Song. Hey Schearwalker remember what It was. Don't mind The Hater Bud! You probably built It to remind You how It was Riding back in The Day. Fan :)
Doctor Who theme from the 80´s, but removed by CZcams: czcams.com/video/g4On0uLqH_I/video.html
Well, whoever told you that’s a 1985 Pro Freestyle Tour was either misinformed or trying to run a scam… there’s no such thing as a 1985 Pro Freestyle Tour…
The Pro Freestyle Tour didn’t exist until mid to late 1986 after GT had a legal issue for using the name World Tour and Pro World Tour… so, in the latter part of 1986, the GT World Tour and Pro World Tour were renamed the Freestyle Tour and Pro Freestyle Tour…
Then in 1987, the ‘86 Freestyle Tour became the ‘87 Pro Freestyle Tour and the ‘86 Pro Freestyle Tour became the ‘87 Pro Freestyle Tour Team Model…
So, in 1985 and MOST of 1986, it was the the GT World Tour and GT Pro World Tour that were the GT flagship freestyle models, not the Pro Freestyle Tour…
Peregrine was the shit
that heavy bashguard should go in the garbage. why wreck the build w that gaudy heavy thing
