  • In Britain, when you think of a bakery chain, Greggs comes to mind. The Newcastle-based bakery chain has been around for over 80 years, and it has expanded beyond just a bakery to include its signature sausage rolls, sandwiches, doughnuts, vanilla slices, and even pizza. The popular bakery chain emerged from humble beginnings and has expanded to over 2000 locations today.
80 years is a long time to be around, and the history of Greggs includes PR victories and clashes with the government. To take a deep dive into this beloved chain, take a look at the untold truth of Greggs.

there is a local bakery/pasty chain near me that has a couple of stores called Pound Bakery (never heard of it outside of where I live and I have only ever seen 2 stores one of which closed a few weeks ago) and it is better than Greggs with CHEAPER food TWO pasties for £1 and all their sandwiches are under £2.50 each with the cheapest options being £1. Go to Greggs and expect to pay at least £1.30 for a SINGLE cheese pasty (at Pound Bakery ALL regular size pasties are 2 for £1 in Greggs the price can vary depending on filling) and that doesn't include motorway or airport branches which are far more expensive

Since Greggs stopped selling Egg Custard tarts I've stopped going there. Even though I do love their sausage rolls their decision to get rid of many historical classics has upset me.
After the custard tarts disappeared in London I used to be able to get them when I visited Manchester on business.
But then they were eventually pulled from those stores, even though they were big sellers.
My alternative is now the pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) sold in Lidl.
    Poor show greggs.

But if youd watch the video youd reaslise the law states unless you want to pay a 20% TAX on the hot bakes, they cant be kept in a hot counter, thats why its sometimes common for pasties and bakes to be cold. It so you pay LESS for the product, if they were kept hot you would have to pay 20% more. I can say from working there that there is nothing more annoying than when someone complains when their food is cold and I have to explain that its not a hot counter.
