- The Pima Air & Space Museum, located in Tucson, Arizona, is one of the world's largest non-government funded aerospace museums. The museum features a display of over 300 aircraft spread out over 80 acres on a campus occupying 127 acres. It has also been the home to the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame since 1991. The collection features fighter jets, commercial jets, military aircraft, and even an SR-71 Blackbird!
The concept for the Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966 during the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the creation of the United States Air Force. Earlier the commanders of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) the forerunner to today’s 309th Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG) recognized that the historic World War II and 1950s era aircraft stored on the base were rapidly disappearing into smelters and that the flames were consuming not just metal, but the aviation heritage of the country. On their own initiative, base officials began to set aside examples of the many types of aircraft stored in MASDC’s yards. These planes were placed along the base’s fence line so that the public could see them through the fence. The display quickly became very popular with the local community but viewing the aircraft through the fence was somewhat unsatisfying.

i Was fortunate enough to visit the Pima Air & Space Museum in 2019. What a wonderful collection and a great walk amongst legends. This is definately a bucketlist item. Loved it and if i ever get the chance, i'll be back. Greetings from the Netherlands!
I went there in 2017. My wife almost left me because. I wouldn’t leave. I was there when it opened and tried to see and touch every plane I grew up loving. (Which was everything there ) then they had to kick me out. Absolutely love this place. I am going again as soon as possible. Arizona is my favourite state. My fav is the SR71.
I was surprised he didn't name that the most significant plane in the collection, until he filled us in on the back story of their Buff.
Patrick, you are my friend for life.
Pima and Davis Monthan, one of the best.
Hats off to these guys, without their efforts things would not exist…. Thanks for sharing….
I took the opportunity to visit a number of museums during a period of "pre-tirement" several years ago and THIS was probably my favorite!
I visited twice. I took three days on my second visit. Also visited the associated missile site. The museum also features some aircraft from other nations. Worth supporting!
Ticked one off my bucket list when I traveled from England to visit PIMA a few years ago. A great collection, and such a friendly bunch of volunteers who work there too, well worth the trip 👍🏻
i came from Australia in 2009 to see this museum and it did not disappoint me one bit. great place. hope to visit again one day .
Today is the first time I have heard of this museum. I only live a bit over 1400 miles from Tucson so this would make for a nice road trip! My favorite is the SR-71 and the B-52 but I really like all of them.
I visited a couple years ago and felt overwhelmed (in a good way) by the size of the collection. Definitely not a “see it in a couple hours” museum.
I have been to over 25 aviation museums in the USA and Canada and this one is THE BEST I've ever been to. I was driving from FL to CA and wanted a break for a couple hours and saw the highway billboards and stopped. Unfortunately I only had 2 1/2 hours before closing time and they had to throw me out! The next time I drive I-10 thru southern Arizona I will be stopping for a longer time.
Absolutely terrific you guys !
What a extraordinary display of every type of aircraft we’ve ever loved 👊🏻
I so love the X-15 and SR71, the pinnacle of speed and security of the USA 🇺🇸
Fabulous video. On my list of places to visit.
What a great description of Pima Air snd Space Museum! I’ve been member for years and visit often. Thanks to Scott for the virtual tour, IMHO it should generate some new memberships..
I visited in 1982 and didn't get back till 2019! It's definitely one of the top aviation museums in the country! I hope to return a bit faster next time. 🙂
Truly great collection. I live here in Tucson. I love going to the Air and Space museum.
Same bro
great walk through - thanks
Nice collection. Even in the passing views, you can see some rare aircraft, e.g. Boeing YC-14, Lockheed YO-3 Quiet Star.
Absolutely the best aircraft museum.
My visit was around the year 2000, I had to see every thing. My favorite was the B58 Hustler.
I first went there in 1978, and enjoyed myself tremendously then. Been back twice and want to go again.
I was once associated with an outfit that operated only eight airplanes, though they were all tactical jets. I thought that was plenty. I'll always treasure my three flights in their F-104D.
I've worked for several aviation museums, and I know that even static collections like this require a huge amount of maintenance.
Hello from Australia, see you have an Australian designed and built DH Drover with original Gypsy Major engines, well done.
very good collection.
Wow, I really need to find a way to visit this place!
Great presentation
Great vid!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
A brilliant guide/commentary; just when I'm thinking of winding in my interest you throw this at me.
This museum will be on my "bucket list" next time I'm out west. Looks to be a great trip though aviation history.
i have been going there for near 45 years since a child.
amazing ❤
This Canadian ranks it 11 outta 10
Definitely going to visit this year!
I'd love to go here one day soon. Wonder if they have perhaps one of the most rare aircraft ever produced, the Cessna 172 🙌 That'd be crazy.
If you go, make time for the Titan Missile Museum, and coming soon the Land Vehicle museum is being built now(2024)
I hope to go there one Of these days to see that collection. Thank you for the video
Thanks for the video. I wish I could go see it in person.
Such a good museum that my (now) wife and I got engaged there.
Sometimes they get high winds in the desert - a few years ago the B-36 was lifted up and its tie-downs pulled out of the ground. I hope PIMA can someday get money for the proposed SAC Cold War building to house the B-36, B-47, B-58, B-52.
it amazes me that they don't build a roof over the top of the whole property and put solar panels on it to pay for the roof. Add walls, and then the dust would go way down too. Maybe get the Gove to kick off the solar roof? A4, my favorite!
That's one place I'd love to visit...
wow you have a Shark from the 174th Avation Co. Americal div. LZ Bronco,Duc Pho S. Vietnam. I was on a Dolphin in the same company. That was a shock from the past.
The Russian's may want to buy some of these if things keep going the way they are.
nice
I hope to visit you one day! 😀
Hi I'm from New York City
Always visit when in the area. Is a definite for aircraft aficionados but some of the docents are somewhat shaky in knowledge..especially about non-US air-frames. . However, I am also a fan of the Erickson Aircraft Collection OR and the War Eagles Air Museum NM. Frankly I find the NASM Udvar-Hazy facility VA to be too "crowded". And of course the National Naval Aviation Museum FL and the National Museum of the United States Air Force OH are also musts.
Are the canopies painted out in order to protect the interiors from sun damage?
Do you have a B 36? I was there back in the day and you had a junky B 58 baking outside. I hope its been given some love.
Sounds like they have the NASA KC-135 "Vomit Comet" zero-g trainer/research plane I was privileged to fly on back in 1987!
N931NA is on outdoor display. It's in need of a paint job, but still looks good. The best part is looking through the refueling window at all the stickers put on through the years.
show the bf109 progress
Sr71 should be one that's oldest thats still in existence
Did not know this existed!!!
Even better than the USAF museuem in Ohio
Around 2:15 you state that most of the famous astronauts in the 60s from Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were part of the X-15 program? What exactly did you mean by this as the vast majority were definitely NOT X-15 pilots, chase pilots, mothership pilots, or otherwise involved at all in the program.
Yes, this was a weird statement.
Hard to watch with that music bed droning on. Maybe switch up the music when the shot changes from outside to inside, different hangers, ect?
I just visited this winter. It was nice but a bit of a let down when the tram driver didn’t show up that day and they’ve discontinued the “bone yard tour” at the base next door. Worth a visit but I appreciated the US Museum of the Air Force in Dayton Ohio as their info presented much better. Please fix the QR codes at the outside aircraft.
YES - PIMA has more than 300+ airplanes... last count I can remember its over 400 plus aircraft. And be careful guys (you at Pima), you claim 300+ in your video title, but then state "nearly" 300 in your video description.
They have more aircraft than the Smithsonian?
Is that a Model 10 Electra behind Scott at the beginning?
Wonder if all these planes can still fly 😁 nevertheless still an awesome collection
Nope.
They are not maintained in flying condition, but many "could" fly again if given LOTs of flight level TLC. Some however have been fully decommissioned to prevent future use.
I just got to give you guys the 1000th Thumb Up. (Yes, it was actually 999).😁
Is this under one roof or place or multiple sites?
One I could not identify is the Coast Guard twin sitting outside. It looks like a cross between a C-123 and a C-130. What is the story on that one?
Great museum! But, the video editor needs some help. Inconsistent color and contrast between clips detracts from the overall video.
That over dubbed music is too loud!
I meant that the music is much louder than the talking, poor editing, learn to take criticism.
I've been twice, it's a great museum. I met Bob Hansen back in 2001. I think your policy of painting the cockpit windows is a mistake- you should correct it. It's like painting a beautiful girl, then scrubbing her eyes out. Honestly, please think about this. Hope to visit again soon.
I was wondering about this practice myself. There must be a good reason for doing it and I suspect it has to do with keeping the heat at bay inside the aircraft to prevent cooking the internals in the hot months down there.
From what I've seen the windows turn yellow and crack or shatter. It may be low humidity but its sky high UV and heat. Not the best place.
I am amazed the engines don't have intake covers on them. Maybe its a wildlife refuge. The jets must have 20 pounds of dirt in them.
"world's largest Aviation collection"
Both the Smithsonian and the National Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio have more aircraft.
He explains in the video that they may be the largest privately-owned Aviation Museum, either way the title is misleading.
I would prefer quality over quantity.
@@rogersmith7396 hahahaha. Where do you work at the museum in Arizona? Lol
They lied to get your attention, it worked, and all you have is this crap?
You either work for them or your just one of those people who needs to be a contrarian.
The title is a lie....
Period....

Uhmmmmm
The plural of Aircraft is Aircraft (no S).
Go help your president.
Oh, good! An English lesson.
Actually, there is such a word as "aircrafts." Just like there's such a word as "peoples." It refers to those things of many types, in a manner of speaking.
