    Pretty darn cool... I'm running a thousand watts of solar into 4 batteries for my 12 volt system in my class A motor home and 500 watts into two batteries to run my 3000 watt inverter for the 110 appliances, washing machine, dryer, microwave and what not... I can boondock anywhere without plugging in... On overcast days, I just raise up my 500 watt wind. Generator or throw in my waterwheel in the nearest river I fish at... I started my project with harbor freight a long time ago with one of these kits which I still have and still works great after all these years... Harbor freight was what got my interest into solar and it just went from there... Now I'm in a position were I don't rely on anyone for power... Such a good feeling with that freedom... Everyone should dabble in this like you see in this video... You will learn slot and have fun getting to were I am at now... So worth it...

    I just picked up one of these systems during the storm Isaias power outage. I added a 400 watt inverter and a WalMart deep cycle marine battery. I have some basic lighting, can charge my phone, power the laptop, even use a TV for a while. I'm impressed. Very simple, plug and play. Yes, there are better things available, but this is READILY available. I'm a happy camper.

    It's not the panels that allow you to run those devices... the panels supply said 100 watts of energy to charge the batteries. So what would be cool to know is how long does it take to charge your battery bank. Because the rest is what the battery does
    For example ( this set up allows me to charge a 30 amp battery in so many hours) and I can run my coffee maker for my family and keep lights on all day with a full battery) something like that would be super cool to see

    I currently have 3 of those HF batteries and they function well. Currently I use 2awg wire because it keeps me in the 4 awg wire range since everthing is less than a foot away as far as the batteries and the inverter which is 750 watts. If I add a 4th battery, it jumps the amps up to 140AH, if I do that, it would require to change the battery cables to 2awg gauge. Will see how it goes. Thanks for a good supporting video that explains how the 100 watt kit works. Good day!

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. If our power went out in Winter, Spring, or Fall, we'd be fine. I have gas range, plenty of kerosene lanterns and a kerosene heater. Losing the computer wouldn't bother me at all, lol. I have a back up Jackery 240 for charging cell phones with a 100w panel which will charge small items and run a 16 inch oscillating fan on high for 7-8 hours.
    But lately, I've trying to figure out what I would do for *Summers* here in the north east. It's brutal without AC. I want to set up a solar system that could handle at least a single 6000btu AC and possibly a minifridge if needed. I'll definitely check out your other videos. *If you have a parts list/shopping list somewhere, I'd love to see it.*

    Like how you put your system inside your porch bench but remember to insulate around the inside then put a couple small vents on each end for ventilation. The weather Hot and Cold can shorten the life of your system, just 1 inch foam board at Lowe's should be a big help plus it will help everything run more efficiently thus extending the life of your system. for about $170 you could have had 220Ah of capacity if you had bought 2 GC2 V6 golf cart batteries. buy larger cable from a wielding supply shop. its a lot cheaper to buy by the ft and then buy the lugs along with a LP torch and plenty of solder. then you can make your own custom cables to connect everything together. the shorter the run of cables the less line loss you have so you end up with a more efficient system.

    not bad for harbor freight stuff ! All that stuff in stock at my store Hamburg NY. I would use 2 100 watt kits. each as a 12V with own charger controller than series batt for 24V and24V true sign wave inverter. you could do 4 kits 4 12V battery sets . all same then series for 48V and get true sine wave inverter. much more efficient. If you change charger controller to MPPT you would get more charging amps and can use LiFePO4 battery or NiFe or even the Salt water battery .There is more than lead batteries out there ! I use NiFe Edison cells. 100 yr life ! search here videos on youtube!!

    I wanted to see what I believed to be an honest to goodness review/opinion of Harbor Freight's 100 Watt solar kit & I believe I just saw a good one. I'd watched another, but the gentleman who provided it seemed a bit too excited in his video presentation. It may have been the real deal, but your video was a bit more convincing. I'd been wanting to get one of these sets along with a couple of Harbor Freight's very inexpensive ''deep cycle'' batteries to experiment with & to see how well they worked with the Harbor Freight 2000 Watt (Max.) inverter I'd originally got to use in a temporary setup on my pickup to power tools. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of a 600 or 650 Watt inverter I'd purchased off that famous bidding for stuff site. I hooked it to the battery of my pickup & as a test I put a cut-off wheel in 1 of my 4 1/2 inch grinders & was able to slice through a piece of 1/4 inch plate steel with absolutely no problem. Getting back to your video & your opinion of this system, I can't really suggest anything other than possibly getting yourself a full sine wave inverter so you'll have a good stable & clean inverted source for 120 volts AC. I've had my eye on the price of those type inverters & they've really come done in price since more people are moving to solar and/or wind generator charged battery banks. A lot of flat screen/HD TVs sold at Walmart type stores lack some of the internal voltage regulation & surge or stabilization circuitry that's normally in the same brand of TV, but is sold in strictly consumer electronics stores. The voltage from the less expensive & more commonly found modified sine wave inverters may not be stable enough to continuously power 1 of these department store TVs which may lack the power regulation circuitry needed to help protect all of the circuits within the TV without causing a problem. Although they've vastly improved, modified sine wave inverters still put out a voltage that's not the smoothest. ''Chunky'' is maybe the best description I've thought of & read to explain how the voltage from a modified sine wave inverter is. Yes, they will work to power that TV, but if you've got a $500 - plus TV, I'd prefer to have it powered by a true, full sine wave inverter to be safe. Like other electronic products, their prices have dropped substantially recently to become very affordable. Since they're designed to give you a cleaner & more stable voltage source that's as clean as if not cleaner than what you may get from your electrical provider, I'd definitely see about getting one for those for your more sensitive as well as expensive electronic items. Thank you Sir for that good & informative video.

    I helped a fellow with his calculations using a TV,DVD player and a light bulb on a 100 Watt panel system and a 110 amp Hour battery:
    Ok you started adding up the TV, DVD, and light at watts per hour. Now usage is 81.5 Watts per hour. 110VAC at 81.5 watts is a draw of .74 amps at 110 VAC. Now we have to see what .74 amps will be at 12VDC. That would be 6.70 amps per hour. Now I have not figured what the amp draw the inverter would draw so lets say 1.5 amps per hour, for a total of 8.2 amps per hour. if you have a 110 amp/hour battery and you do not want to take less than 50 %
    discharge,ut of it you calculate haw many times 8.2/110 = approx 13.4 hours or the battery would be at 50% in 6.7 hours. Now you are using a 100 Watt per hour solar panel that you state would supply 80 Watts per hour for 5 hours a day. So 80/12=6.0 Amps per hour * 5 hours = 30 amps per day, So on average it would take 110/30 = 4 days to fully charge the battery, and 2 days to charge to 50%. I hope this helps.

      20V is the max of many 12V panels with 17V to 18.5 being their max wattage point. Both of which are safe as long as you are using a charge controller. You can also use something like a MingHe 7210A with them to charge a 24V system or put them in series and run a 48V system possibly. Mine are on a 24V system and they do just fine. But do not expect them to put out more than 50% of the wattage.

      That 1000 watt inverter though is likely not a sine wave inverter. It most likely s a square wave or MSW. If you run a microwave, a square wave won't be good for it and a MSW will take twice as long to heat things. Motors in a refrigerator like the sine wave better as do most electronics.

    On the little 2 Conductor Barrel Connector that plugs into the Charge Controller, is the Tip Positive or Negative?
    Why must the unit only be used with Lead-Acid Batteries?
    I purchased a Jackery Inverter Power Supply unit (their 100w) Solar Panels cost $300 and the Harbor Freight setup (with extra goodies) was under $200.
    I was going to build an adapter that goes from the Harbor Freight Barrel Connector (a Female Socket that fits it) to a Female part of a Automotive Cigarette Lighter.
    The Jackery Cigarette Lighter Plug will hook up there to run Solar Panels to the Jackery Unit.
    No butchering any or the wires to either setup.

    battery manufactures do not recommend connecting more than three batteries in parallel and they must be the same type and size. due to charging imbalances. also you can not draw lead acid batteries down more than 50% or it will damage them. so that being said, three 12volt 100ah lead acid batteries in parallel will give you 150ah/1800watts of useable power.

      in the U.S. we have 120/240 panels in our homes. ok , lets do the math. 240vac X 47.5 amps = 11,400 watts. while I've never seen a welder running maxed out, you can still figure on using 30amps of load or 7200 watts. so you would need a 8000 watt inverter and enough batteries to run it. then 2000 watts of solar power to charge the batteries back up.

      These do actually last and do work. They are poly crystal instead of mono and have a lower efficiency. But, these have a major advantage. You can buy them in almost any Harbor Freight. Replacement panels, connectors, ect, can be picked purchased same day. No one caries renogy parts in store.

      So the kit is $1144.5 from what he showed and average coffee is $5 so that would be 229 ice coffees. So less than what many people spend in a year when they buy 1 a day. This doesn't include other uses he gets out of it so yea he is coming out on top.

  • @gravelydon7072
    @gravelydon7072 Před 5 lety

    You paid way too much for the batteries. 4 Deep cycle marine batteries ( 27MDP ) from Exide would run you under $400 and give you 400 amp/hours at the 20 hour rate on 12 volts. While not sealed batteries, they do not produce much gas if you charge them correctly. Sealed batteries unless AGM type of lead acid batteries do vent just like regular lead acid batteries just they are semi-sealed up. And that is what causes them to go bad. Not adding water until the battery won't hold a charge and you pop out the sealed section to get to the plugs in each cell. Lithium batteries, while having better charge/discharge cycle ratings, are more costly.

    • @pauls5745
      @pauls5745 Před 7 lety

      I figured it cost me almost $1/day to run a 7500btu ac, not 24/7 just about 10 hours. so 10c /hour? to pay for itself, running 365 figure itd take 3 years. there's a high overhead with solar, but with LED lighting and DIY so many things to set up, you can really make it work for cheap in a 5 year plan. thats how long the batteries would last. maybe less tho :(

    • @turboflush
      @turboflush Před 7 lety

      pds tech alternatively.. dont run batteries or so many and just allow loads to run during day. When you would need it anyways.

    This video is pretty misleading. First off, the Harbor Freight 100 watt kit is $180 and you spent $1,144...and just to make a lopsided system to show off the "capabilities" which solely depend on the inverter and batteries. You could toss the Harbor freight kit out the window and do the same CZcams demo you just did (run the drill, coffee maker, dremel, ect). You certainly cannot run even the tiniest dorm room fridge off your setup for a few days in a row. The panels and charge controller are totally insufficient for even this simple task. But sure it can run a drill for a few minutes or make coffee a few times then spend the rest of the week recharging the batteries.

      I'd just prefer that if someone creates a video for viewing they do it in some sort of decent manner where the principle of the video is all that is heard.
      By the way, You sought me out while I'm simply replying to your idiotic statement. However I suggest you obtain some sort of life and maybe even some help rather than to worry yourself to the point of anxiety over a posting left by someone that has no connection to you at all. Judging from your verbiage "Dude" and "Get a life" I would bet you're an immature youth or at least write as one. You must spend much of your time on your mother's couch eating & playing video games otherwise where would you find the time to write such nonsense nor why would you even care. .
