Join me on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Kingston upon Thames as I tackle the 20-mile Breakfast Run, a crucial marathon tester filled with surprises, challenges, and the sheer beauty of determination. It's an early Sunday morning, and the stage is set amidst the drizzle, with thousands of runners lining up for an event that promises to test our limits and fuel our marathon dreams.
Starting in a picturesque town centre with it's market place ambiance, this video captures every heartbeat of the race-from the anticipation-filled start to the exhilarating sprint to the finish line. Alongside fellow runners, we navigate through the scenic Thames path, encounter unexpected muddy trails, and push through the weariness with relentless spirit.
Discover how I managed without water or gels, aiming to remind my body to efficiently utilise fat as fuel, and see if I could keep up with the ambitious pace I set for myself. Experience the highs and lows, the camaraderie among runners, and the beautiful landscapes of Kingston, all while racing against the elements and my own expectations.

Strong running! I know that it is not getting easier to run that fast when you get older. I also like your attitude towards gels and other sports nutrients. People tend to think that you have to follow the advises from commersial channels and influensers regarding this. It is no problem avoiding these products. One of Norways best ultra runners, Yngvild Kaspersen, is fueling her runs with sugarwater, fried potatoes and jelly bears😊
I’m amazed how you’re able to do such distances without water or gels. Realise you’ve trained your body but it’s still impressive. Always enjoy your race videos. 👏🏻👏🏻
Yes, it really is all about consistently doing the same thing. Your body just learns that it's not getting water or food so it has to use it's own resources more efficiently.
15:36 - ha, brilliant mate! Thanks for the shout out! Huge well done, you make a fast pace look easy!
I really want to make a roast video of different running CZcamsrs but I don't have the guts. Yours would just be me getting swamped and drowning in thousands of fist bumps.
@@FilmMyRun haha, I’d be more than happy to see that! It’s all in good fun!
6:47 I love it! Let's call them all Christmas markets!
That "GOOOooooOoooo" was Hilarious at start of the race 😂😂😂😂
It certainly gave us all a shock! Thanks for watching!
One amazing guy.well done you.
Thanks Vanessa.
Well done on an amazing effort, especially after being unwell, glad you are on the way back, love the smiley lady throwing your t shirt into your bag, 😆
Thanks Jen. Hopefully no more illness on the horizon!
GO Steve! 👍
That’s an impressive time with a loo stop! Looks like an unusual course there, but if you can accomplish that pace on open roads and mixed terrain you’re on for a good time at the marathon Stephen 💪 I’m 3 weeks away from Manchester and testing my pace this weekend. Incredibly nervous! All the best
What are you hoping for? Good luck with the test. Simply adjust your goals if you're not quite there. That's what I do all the time!!!
@@FilmMyRun my goal is to finish comfortably and I’m being cautious in my pace with a 3:45 target for my first marathon. I want to run a smart pace strategy and give myself the opportunity to get quicker in the latter part. I’d love to get a quicker time, but I have literally no idea how it’s going to go!! Good luck with yours
Very nice to watch that and well done 👍 Also - a mug! Fantastic!!
You could get a medal too but you had to order it beforehand and pay for it.
Another wonderful race-report👏👏. You make them so enjoyable with your comments underway - and the audio is just superb. Congrats on your run! You looked strong to me. With some proper training and hopefully no illness you´ll soon be flying again😆😆
Thank you so much John. I do make an effort to have decent sound quality. I really don't like wind noise if I can help it.
That was outstanding 👍
Thanks you. Appreciate that.
Familiar roads! I was wondering why everybody else was dressed for a race :) I did a HM on this rough course a few years and remember a fair amount of dodging on and off pavements. At least wasn't wet and muddy on the towpath.
Well it was a bit wet and muddy in one section. I was sliding a bit it my roadies…..oh wait you mean when you did it.
Sleeping in a van in London is hardcore.
Nice run.
I mean it is Kingston….its a long way from Peckham in so many ways 😂
Given all the nice things you got in your post race goody bag, I can’t believe there wasn’t a mince pie from the Christmas market 😅
I know!!! It is Christmas after all
No Christmas shopping? (I am glad you specified as my brain was warping)
An amazing time. Many thanks for the video. I have done the 16-miler twice before for the Breakfast run. I ran along the Barge Towpath a month ago and it was awful with mud and puddles/road shoes were useless. Will be doing it again on Sunday!! Noted your comment about the towpath regarding mud and slippery conditions and that your pace dropped off. So wondering would you recommend trail shoes? Will be going in the Hampton Court Palace Home Park as well which is notorious for bad conditions.
It’s a toss up really depending on how comfortable your trail shoes are on the roads. If you will mostly be on road with a little bit of towpath then you could get away with road shoes. Mostly towpath and I’d say definitely hybrid or trail. But of your trail shoes are comfortable, wear them whatever.
@@FilmMyRun Many thanks. The trail shoes are very comfortable. I worked out that about 8 miles out of 13 miles are on mud - namely the Barge Towpath twice and the Home Park... It was horrible a month ago and going by your video, it has not improved! By the way, good luck for the Brighton Marathon. I am doing that as well.
Sorry for crashing into you on the finish line 🙏🏻
Absolutely no problem! I'm married so I'm used to getting thumped from behind!
