  • Collecting every single Beatles related release in 1982 was a very expensive affair. There were multiple singles, albums and box sets from all four solo members and The Beatles themselves. Being their 20th anniversary, there was no shortage of stories in the news from the past, present and future of the group. In this video, we cover all that and more from September to December that year and I guarantee that you'll learn something new and more importantly, enjoy it!

To reflect Australia's differing tastes, EMI Australia issued its own version of 20 Greatest Hits. As The Beatles had 23 number ones in Australia, the title was aptly changed to *The Number Ones.* However, not all tracks would fit into a standard vinyl LP, so three tracks ("Love Me Do", "I Feel Fine" and "Rock and Roll Music") were added as a bonus EP that came with the original album
The Australian album is unique as it is the only album release of the original 1963 stereo mix of "I Want To Hold Your Hand". This was only previously available on a 1976 Australian reissue of the original single. This stereo mix of the song has never been officially released on compact disc or any other digital format.
The album was released May 1983 on both LP and cassette. It spent one week at the top of the Australian album charts in 1983.
Due to timing problems, EMI included a three-track bonus EP (A-980) with the 20-track LP. Without the same length limitations, the cassette version contains all 23 tracks.
The Number Ones stayed in print in Australia until 1991. It was deleted (with other Australian only compilations) when EMI Australia ceased vinyl production. It was never released on compact disc.

I'm still pretty fond of Compleat Beatles, and have a copy on the LaserDisc format, which is probably the best looking copy available. I recently had the chance to interview Malcolm McDowell, and mentioned that I had a copy, and he regaled me with stories of seeing the Beatles at the Cavern Club, since he grew up in Liverpool. For years I wondered why he had been chosen to narrate Compleat Beatles, but now I know what a personal connection he has to the Beatles' early days.

"The Complete Beatles" was the definitive Beatles biography, in my opinion, and was always a favorite of mine.. I was in undergrad school when it came out, and can remember looking forward to seeing it whenever it aired (it was rerun on TV in the US fairly often at the time), and eventually purchased the VHS version. it's a shame that McCartney felt the need to quash it when he did, as It really didn't represent any kind of competition with the Anthology Series.

I still have it and just watched it again a couple months ago to see if it was still good. It's a very good primer, and while not 100% accurate, I think it holds up really well as an overview introduction. Very well-edited -- though many of the misleading things in it are due to tricks of editing creating false implications. But that's artistic license for you and it works. I love their use of pathetic fallacy, showing nothing but stormy weather on their 1966 tour. It's just great.

I was a college freshman in the Fall of 1982, and while walking downtown in my new school's city, I spotted a portion of a magazine in an old-school magazine shop window that said, "Free Silver Beatles 45!" The magazine also turned out to have featured an interview with Pete Best, which was the companion piece.
"I'd like a copy of 'Oui,' please," and the weary, late middle-aged man behind the counter slowly handed me the latest copy.
"No, no, isn't there one like in the window?"
He gestured towards the window, and told my relieved self that I could buy it.
I found a seat out on the commons, eager for details.
I'd been so fixated on a record of what they claimed was previously unreleased material by "The Silver Beatles" that I hadn't realized that 'Oui' was a second-rate version of "Playboy." I enthusiastically opened it in full, public view, and frantically turned page after page to find the coupon, until it dawned on me that those pictures I'd seen before the one I'd seen of Pete Best were of Linda Blaire not posing in family photos. Oh.
Ironically, I tore out but never did send the coupon away for my 45 rpm of The Silver Beatles' [I think] "Like Dreamers Do."
Btw - the Pete Best interview was kinda cool, as was the feature on Toto, both of which my barely 18 year-old self eventually got around to reading.🤭
(The Toto interview concluded with the interviewer asking the band if there were anything else they would want to read about themselves in "Oui" upon the interview's publication in it.
I forget which of the band's members answered, "Read it? We're not gonna read it! We're just gonna look at the pictures!")

Blue stereo box (maybe 1981), red mono box, and both the blue Singles and EPs. I was a junior in high school, and working part time running cameras for a local television station newscasts. Still living with my parents, all the money I earned was spent on gas and Beatles records. All the box sets are mint, but the sadly the Mono Collection (BM10) has some spines damaged from shipping. I bought it new in 1982 and it arrived in that condition (UK import). Ugh! They were all bagged within a week or two of purchase and are still in perfect shape.

In 1982 I was still busy trying to complete a collection of UK albums that I'd only recently realized were VERY different than the US albums. I was buying whatever issues I could find because I also didn't know that there were differences in pressings that inspired massive obsessive examination and discussion by collectors. 😉 Since watching this channel I've found out I have the wrong versions of everything...

I may have also bought the Beatles Red and Blue double albums .... my record buying was in full swing by 1982 as around 1981/82 I'd bought my first stereo record player (Dual turntable). A memorable 1982 purchase in the summer was Steely Dan's 'Gold' album. Going on 60 years of interest over these men, there's been several years where the interest was in just a passing of the headline. Being in my mid 20's in the early 80's, I knew how the press had treated them over the years and took most headlines with a gain of salt. Looking back it amazes me on how they could still be so vibrate when asked the same stupid questions or the kind of got you type of thing. Most of Paul's and George's solo music still stands to this day. I miss John, which is odd because I never met the man, but felt his music was cut short in the next phase of his life, if that makes sense. I give your channel credit for my review of much of their music and breaking down both the writing and the playing and how excellent it was. John's rock and roll voice, George's excellent blues/country/rock riffs, Paul's dynamic bass lines, and the always under rated Ringo. Thanks as always Andrew, keep up the good work Laddie!

1982 was a good year for the most part for any Beatles' fan. The renewed interest in their back catalog and also the John Lennon Collection, continued to expose and encourage the music to the next generation. Something that continues to this day with the new reissues which still come out from time to time. I also remember "The Girl Is Mine" coming out and the excitement surrounding the record, until you heard it. Such light, pop rubbish, by two great artists!! The section with the interchange of dialog between Paul and Michael really revealed how bad the record really was, not to mention it's 1982 "sterile" sounding production. I haven't personally heard it in years, but am glad Paul has never included it in any of his Greatest Hits packages or collections. (Well, as far as I know!) Paul's probably too embarrassed about it these days, and it was also issued on Epic (Jackson's record label), rather than on EMI, and Paul possibly didn't want to hassle with the licensing to include it. Thanks Andrew for also reminding me about GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET. I remember when this came and went in the movies theaters back in it's day. It came and went so quickly (lots of bad reviews!) I missed going to see it, and finally saw it on Video with a girlfriend at the time, who told me she'd break up with me if i ever showed her such an awful film again. I had to turn it off about 1/2 way through. The only scene I still find fun to watch is the "Ballroom Dancing" section which albeit a bit "corny", works fairly well. (For those who haven't seen it, here: czcams.com/video/xwOxAtnQomM/video.html ). I suppose the film also confirmed that Paul wasn't the best film maker, but like MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR I would guess the film, these days, has a bit of a "cult" following. George Harrison's GONE TROPPO, was also a good indication he was just enjoying life and doing what he wanted and not worrying too much about being a Music celebrity anymore. It does have a few good songs, but is clearly an album that is not remembered, except by "huge" fans. One of the very few Beatles' related albums to ever make it to the "Cut Out" Bins. The copy on Vinyl which I own, I bought at my local grocery market for $1.49!! Still have it! Dig, DmGrk

    Hey, Parlogram!
From Newark,Ohio in USA...I sit alone in my house and deeply enjoy your videos. Your videos are excitingly edited, and thrillingly educational.
Exactly why? I was not a Beatles fan until well into the CD era. Your videos stir up chapters of previous fan-feuled eruptions when Beatlemania continued to surface, with whatever new products were issued. You bring a taste of the consumerism jolts that everyone loves, when a new release hits the market.
Even the products that weren't so great- it still was exciting, on some level. That's what you let me experience on a historical level.
I also value the technical advice, critiques, and the general sense of intelligence and naked excitement. Your takes are wise, but not overly-gaurded nor bitter.
You are the next-door neighbor everyone wishes they had, to borrow a cup of record cleaning fluid from.
It seems wrong to always watch your videos, and not compliment and thank you. There must be many thousands of isolated guys like me who feel the same way, so thanks from us all.
Yes...they certainly should be sending you reviewers samples at the least, and actually should be paying you for consultation meetings regarding what fans really want on future releases. Hopefully, it will eventually swing that way. If you continue as you have done, your reputation as a leading authority can only continue to grow. Ever thought about hosting-narrating a new feature-length documentary? I'd love that. For a unique angle, you could focus on the vinyl releases: the actual products responsible for the mania. The records. The manufacturing, marketing, in-store sales. That, alone, is a story.

And yes, I had bought all of the imported-to-the-U.S. Parlophone mono pressings, one by one, during the previous months. I remember feeling rather smug when I saw the mono box on the display shelf over the cash registers in Record World.
The other import I bought with my after-school money was a 12" single of "Give Peace a Chance," which, until then, I'd only heard in its abridged version on "Shaved Fish," backed with "Remember Love," as on the original 45.
Its sleeve reproduced the cover art for "Give Peace a Chance" that appeared on "Shaved Fish." (Had that been the original picture sleeve in the U.K.?)

I believe the 1982 re-issue of Love Me Do, or maybe the Greatest Hits album that followed soon after, were the very first official Beatles releases to feature the 'dropped T' logo. The Compleat Beatles was my gateway into the group. I still think it does afar better job of telling the story than Anthology-even if it is only a fifth of the length. It has a very well-written script, some really interesting footage (for 1982 anyway), and is a classier production all round compared to the Anthology. Ok, apart from that Revolver bit. I've bought a couple of bootleg versions of it, but I'm certain they all have the same section missing: when George Martin talks about the recording of the orchestra for A Day In The Life. Great vid, Andrew!

Yoko fan here again! "It's Alright" was, well, *alright*. It seems she was trying too hard to be pop-radio and commercial, and we all know her music is not commercial, so the results are a sort of restrained sound for her. Her next, "Starpeace" was a similar glossy production, bur 1994's "Rising" is a stunningly great album.

I also adore that UK single of Lennon's "Love" with the piano all on one level rather than the fade-ups. There was a promo CD single released in Japan in 1998 (to coincide with the Lennon Legend hits compilation) that just might have that version. I don't have it, and I can't confirm if it is the same mix or not. It contains two versions of "Love", listed as single version and original version. I was irked this mix wasn't included on the Lennon/Plastic Ono Band deluxe box.

That is frustrating. The only time I've ever heard Love with the non-faded intro was on some bootleg which I don't even think I have anymore. The Plastic Ono Band set had tons of room to squeeze on a mere 3-minute song, and it would have been a nice bonus, but as John Belushi used to say on SNL, "buuuut NOOOOOOOOO....."

Great video! If I remember correctly, I bought all of these items -- with the exception of all the expensive ones! No boxes for me. But I'd like to add that the 20 Greatest Hits packages in their US and UK configurations put together minus the duplicates is the '1' album = all tracks that reached number 1 in either the UK or the US. It's quite puzzling that the albums were not as successful as expected while '1' was a 30-million-plus smash worldwide. Also a bit strange is the fact that many European subsidiaries of EMI published the US configurationj. Is it really more attractive?
When Love Me Do was reissued, it was also pulished as the first of the picture disc series that were planned to appear (and duly appeared) on the 40th anniversary of the original.
As for the Compleat Beatles -- the VHS and Betamax videos were supplemented with a two-volume large format set of reconstructed musical scores of the Beatles' complete catalogue plus a couple of illustrated essays. Not quite as 'compleat' as the title suggests, but no mean feat. (I just see that the date of print is near the end of 1981. So it seems the video (same striped design with the silhouettes) is the companion piece to the scores?)

I knew of all these releases, but paid them almost no attention, since we had all the music already. I had heard that they were all quality records...except George's GONE TROPPO, which was unanimously judged his worst album, by literally anyone (and everyone) who reviewed it. In 1982 I was anxiously awaiting further information on The Hollies reunion with Graham Nash. It had been announced at the end of 1981, with two single releases following the announcement. As for the upcoming GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET project, an old friend of mine predicted; "you know, the thing's either going to be a huge hit, or completely flop!" I'd have to wait another two years for that verdict to come. I'd also been enjoying the latest releases from Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Men At Work and Marshall Crenshaw in 1982.

Paul's crowfeet are on full display (though these have been a feature of his every time he smiles since the very beginning, so I guess it's youthful...for him) and this profile shot of Cliff makes him look like the Cryptkeeper. I'm not saying they weren't youthful, just that this was the wrong photo to show that.

Andrew. Watched your two videos on 1982. Brilliant! I was born in 1949 and was 10 in 1960 and 20 in 1970. As you can imagine, the 60’s is my musical decade and The Beatles were my heroes then and remain so today. However, John Paul, George and Ringo have successfully (or not!) released new solo music since 1970. To 1982/3. Beatles Paul’s two albums Tug of War and Pipes of Peace are both wonderful albums full of diverse music. The Tug of War track is a production Tour de Force, Take it Away is an excellent piece of 80’s pop and Wanderlust is a beauty. I loved Pipes of Peace and it’s lovely video but a very underrated track must be Tug of Peace! Not my musical thing but come on…a pointer toward future mash ups? And with Ringo on drums! I still have both albums in vinyl, still play them and they both epitomise Paul’s astonishing output and creativity in the early 80’s! There are a million artists who would have loved to be able to write that number of excellent songs in that time frame. Paul dunnit!
