    YES! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I was becoming pretty concerned that I’d have to return the camera, because no object tracking is a dealbreaker for me, especially since this camera doesn’t have IBIS.

    I am preparing to make a video of a similar topic about the AF system of Canon R5C. I noticed this one after I met and talked with one Canon technician in Melbourne. Thank you for making this video and sharing the findings. Canon should explain this to the public in a more official way as early as possible, otherwise Canon R5C will lose its market share unnecessarily due to widespread misunderstanding of its AF system.

    The thing I still miss in the R5C-AF is the animal-AF, hope the Cinema-AF will once get this upgrade and then I will be happy. While a walking cat can be tracked, it is difficult to see small birds in a tree, in this usecase the R5 is much better, also tracking flying birds works better on a R5. But I agree, the Cinema-AF from the R5C is really good! For me it is absolutely no reason to say that someone should not buy the R5C because of the AF, unless if he/she is not a bird videographer.

      Same for me. And not only for animal. But also with people shot. Specially in 4K 120. Happened to me several times when capturing from side or behind!
      And yes; I do come from the R5/R6 background.

    Thanks for this! I actually never even THOUGHT about using the Whole Area option as I thought it would randomly lock onto subjects I didn't want in focus. It makes you wonder why Small and Large focus areas are even an option in the menu! as who wouldn't want to use the entire screen for AF?! I have the tracking option set to button 10 and have used that option extensively to make the AF system act more like the R5 I'm use to. Using Whole Area makes the AF system operate so much more like the R5! Like you said, I may only have to use tracking when using the EVF now. Can't wait to test this out.

    • @vitaminb4869
      @vitaminb4869 Před rokem

      The small/large are there when you want to manually AF on a certain point. It's good when you don't want the focus to auto change during a shot. This is what I use all the time, unless there is some fast moving object I need to track.

    Spoke with a Canon rep at a camera convention and I was left with the impression that they perfectly well could give the R5's AF to the R5C but they just choose not to because a snappy, photo like AF doesnt serve the intrests of the majority of their cinema line users, hence we are left with a more manual focus pull like performance.

    I am coming from a full manual focus rig and i more and more find the AF System on the R5C (once configured to taste) so good that i am actually considering to sell all the electronic follow focus stuff and manual lenses. it seems that 95% of use cases can be done with the AF, and for the other 5% i guess i can live with the not-so-optimal-to-focus-by-hand EF/RF lenses.
    one thing that bothers me is that the "tracking" function needs to be put on f.e. button 9 like here in the video to initialize, but once it is on you can press the joystick on the back to get the same function to re-arange the crosshair. why isnt it possible to put the "tracking" function on that joystick in the first place....would be much more intuitive and better to reach. it works in photo mode and is how i have setup my R6 too. why canon?

    I have a pressing question. Is the R5C as good for photography as the R5? What do you see as the down falls of R5C for photography?

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  Před rokem

      Having used both for photography, the R5 and R5C are almost identical. The only "downfall" is that the R5C does not have IBIS for photo, so if you are shooting with really slow shutter speeds, you can not get away with it quite as much. I don't consider this a deal breaker, because the R5 and R5C have such clean ISO that if I'm in a dark handheld place I'll usually up the ISO rather than slow down the shutter and risk blur.
      Honestly, I never really shoot a lot of slow shutter handheld scenes anyway, so this lack of IBIS is not a big deal for me. All that being said, I really feel that when it comes to photos, these two cameras are virtually identical. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
