  • My name is Evan Reinheimer. I am a full time artist and I travel the world using a kite to lift my camera into the sky to create unique aerial photographs. This technique is called "Kite Aerial Photography."
    In this video, I demonstrate my 9' Levitation Delta made by Into The Wind Kites. I use this kite frequently for my Kite Aerial Photography. It is a great kite that provides stability and great lift in a wide wind range. I attempt to let out 1,000 feet of kite line in this video, watch to see what happens! (Do not attempt to fly a kite that high without proper authorization.)

    To tell you the truth i didnt think anyone has ever tried this but me. I just decided to see if anyone has ever flown a kite extremely high. I did it about 3 years back and plan on doing it again. I used 50 pound test fishing line and used 3 1000 ft rolls no joke. I had it so high we couldnt see it anymore only feel the tention of the string.

    • @MyFortunas
      @MyFortunas Před rokem

      Today I tried, I had like approx. 100 to 200 m fishing line. I have used old fishing rod. It was wet windy evening, and at first it was nothing, but shen it cached the wind oh boy.. the spool started to spin so fast and went to the end. I got it back, the I gave it to try for my gf, and in the middle the line broke. Well 100m was scarry, so I believe 1km (3000ft) was totalt crazy. I will buy another and try again with longer fishing line

      @@MyFortunas oh yeah its insane how far you can go. Advice i can give is as soon as you start to feel a lot of tension in the line let some go or let the spool spin. I had learned this when i was a kid and i had went with my dad to visit a friend and he wanted to fly kites and he uses fishing line for his. I cant remember how many spools of fishing string he had but it was a paper sack full. Not even sure weight or length of each roll but he went thru at least 14 and a half rolls before the line snapped. We were out in the country in a massive open field witch was perfect. I think i was 11 years old or 10 and im almost 44 years old now. Good luck to you on your adventure maybe record it and upload to youtube.

    I have the 9ft Levitation Delta also. Great kite. Looks awesome in the sky and I get pleasing comments from people admiring it. And as you say - quite a wide wind range. I look forward to using it for KAP soon. The only thing which is a bit of a downside is the spars. There are a fair number of them and they are a bit vulnerable when I'm setting up the kite on the ground. I'm a bit reluctant about having other people close by when setting up because all it takes is one person to accidentally step on a spar and it's instantly damaged. And then I would need to order a replacement. That actually happened the very first time I used the kite. I was walking to the flying location and one of the spars slipped and fell and I walked right over it and damaged it. I admit those KAP foil kites look really tempting to me because of the complete lack of spars.

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  Před 2 lety +1

      Ugh...I've broken spars before also. It usually happens at the worst time and in the worst places. I broke a key spar on a kite that I needed on Easter Island years ago...there are no kite shops there and any order would take weeks to arrive. Now I travel with some replacement pieces in my case.

    Nice kite. I still haven't decided which one I want for my first KAP kite. The KAP Foil 3.0 is out of stock and this one is too. Do you think that the 7' would be strong enough for lifting just a small little action camera? I just want to dabble in KAP for now. I have a ONE R 360 camera and I've seen others using the ONE R and getting some cool shots on KAP kites. I just don't want to get a kite that's too weak.

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  Před 3 lety +2

      Not your imagination at all, very observant! Once the kite got pretty high it started to pull to the right. The wind felt MUCH stronger up there than it was on the ground (ground speed was 12-15mph). So it could have been from being overpowered or maybe there was a secondary wind up higher that was blowing harder off the water. As I brought the kite back down it straightened out again.

We will try to fly even higher with a 33% bigger kite with carbon fibre spars. Perhaps 25,000 ft is within reach. BTW, your kite is leaning to the right.

    I have a Sutton Flowform and the same Into the Wind 9' Levitation Delta. I preffer the Delta! I use mine with a matching black and white fuzzy tail. It gives a lot more stability and it also helps to avoid bumps on the kite when the wind suddenly changes. I'd heard that some people cut the upper spreader and then they put a dihedral union between both spars but I never had any problem with mine. It is true that it's illegal to fly a kite above the 500 feets?? I recently added two drone collision lights to mine. I do not fly near an airport nor at night, but one day I saw an Airbus A320 doing a sharp evasive manuver to avoid the area were my kite was flying. I was flying at least 100' below my 500' line limit, but that event scared the hell out of me!!!

    • @projectDEBO
      @projectDEBO Před 3 lety +1

      In the United States, kites are regulated under FAA guidelines 14 C.F.R. part 101 which stipulate no flight above 500' and you have to be more than 5 miles from the nearest airport. Now, both of those regulations /technically/ only apply to kites that weigh more than 5 pounds and the regs are unclear about how kites with payloads (like a kap setup) fit but, there is always the general requirement to not operate in an unsafe manner. Flying your 1 pound kite at 1000' 2 miles from an airport may not /technically/ violate anything but, if the kite is in conflict with aircraft, you just might hear about it if they can find you.

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  Před 3 lety +1

      I love the 9' Levitation Delta also. I've heard of that spreader modification but I have not done it with mine. It seems to work just fine as is. Yes, as Steven stated below, 500' is the legal limit in the USA with some other stipulations. Best to always be extra safe when flying at any altitude.

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  Před 2 lety +1

      In steady winds it should be pretty solid. You can add a tail to help prevent the overflying. It can tend to bounce side to side at times, depending on the wind conditions. A tail would help ease that as well. I don’t usually use a tail because I have other kites I use that take that kind of wind a little better.

    By my calculation, assuming (in place of the catenary) a taut line angle of 60 degrees, with 700 feet of line paid out, that makes 606 feet elevation. Which puts the kite 106 feet above the FAA maximum of 500 feet. FAA regulations further require visibility streamers attached to the line every 50 feet beginning at 150 feet elevation.
    Neither of which violations are anything at all to me, but I do wonder... Has anyone ever received so much as even just a sternly worded email from the FAA regarding this sort of on-line posting? I mean, here you are, providing them with video evidence and a full confession of prior intent. Not yours alone, but many similar videos made by others and posted on-line for years. It is a mildly curious thing.

      I’m sure people have been contacted for violating the rules. A simple call to ATC for permission when wishing to fly above limits is always required and something I probably should have mentioned in the video and perhaps even recorded. Although I ended up not getting the kite as high as I had hoped this day, I would never intentionally fly in a way that is unsafe or put others in danger.

    This makes no sense. He goes to the beach so he can let the kite go to 1000ft. It’s in the title. The kite doesn’t go to 1000 feet. Then he says he wants to do this so he can rewind his line tighter. But then after that he is doing a technique to make reeling the kite in easier? I’m confused. It’s like the entire point of the video was forgotten. And why not name the video “taking my kite up to 800ft” like why lie about the last 200? This is still cool, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just confusing me

    Yeah, but you didn't fly it up to 1,000 feet which is what I came to see. :P

      In all the years this video has been up, you’re the first to point that out…hahahaha…I guess it’s time for me to film one where I actually make it to 1000’🪁

      @@EvanReinheimer Because I know they have drone flying height limits, I was doing a bit of research on kite flying heights so I wanted to see how high people fly their kite. I've always wanted to fly a kite super high, but I've never owned a kite, so maybe one of these days.

      @@GoldwireIT nice! I also talk about why I couldn’t get it as high as I wanted in the video and the limitations of kite altitudes.
