I think also of all the music he didn’t release, that would have done, it for him. I woke up in mourning, this morning. Since a child, his music performed by others and his own mastery, has been a part of me. Meeting him, is something I can cherish, along with his music that touched our Souls. Thank You, Gordon. ✨🕊✨
I actually think it's a blot on the RARHOF and an insult to Gordon Lightfoot that he has not been Inducted. I also think he is deserving of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. HIs only issue was, he didn't bow down to the US market and stayed faithful to his Canadian heritage.
When I was a boy, The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald was one of the songs that inspired me to take up sailing. In 2019, now in my 50s (and after many years of doing the sport), I joined a team to do the Trans-Superior race... and had no idea that deadly squalls hit that monster of a lake even in summer. It was the most treacherous experience of my life; hail, lightning, 15ft seas and gusts up to 30kts. The day after arriving safely in Duluth (thank G-d), we went to the Anchor Bar to celebrate. When the song came on the jukebox I had to stop eating lunch for a good cry.
I have never sailed on the Great Lakes but was a commercial angler on the ocean living on a sail boat. Us sailors can relate to that song on a level landlubbers cannot. I understand what you were saying living through a deadly storm that was not predicted, near me a front killed three people not as fortunate as we were and gave me an intense night damaging my boat.
@@justanamerican9024 What I was describing was a squall that we hit, or I say a squall that hit US on our 2nd full day out. You'd never have thought that it was summer under those conditions and I learned why the natives were so superstitious about Superior. The could formations under gray skies sailed overhead at really high speeds. And they looked like objects...kind of like when you saw clouds that reminded you of things as a kid. We nicknamed one "The Owl" because it looked like two giant white wings. They just flew overhead like spirits and then picked a spot on the lake where they'd wreak havoc. All I could do was tether myself to a jackline and pray. I'm sorry to hear about the deaths of your three mates. Btw, when the song came on at the Anchor Bar, I had to stop eating my burger for a ten minute cry. I bowed my head, pinched the bridge of my nose, squinted and let the tears come. No one made fun of me.
Sounds crazy but I have been very sad all day since learning of it. My grandparents used to play his music all the time when I would go stay with them. So many memories. I wish I could’ve gotten to see him in concert. His songs always reminded me of my childhood. I wish I could’ve gotten the chance to tell him how much of a hero he was and how much of an impact he has had on my life. His music helps me remember my grandparents who have sadly passed and now that he passed it’s just been really hard.
@@MichaelMyers-pj2uk I think his words and music spoke to the human soul. To the very core of the human experience. To what it means to be human. Good news. I have got my crying under control.
Wore out my Gords Gold album from listening to it so much when I was a kid in the 70’s I bought the 8 track and did the same. Knew every song by heart from listening over and over. To me the greatest folk artist of all time. Rest In Peace Mr Lightfoot. Your music will live on forever. Thank you for the memories.
This man is everything that it means to be cdn. His kindness. His empathy. He was the best that a person coukd be and Canada and all Canadians loved this man. He led by example. He spent 40 years visiting the relatives and immediate families of the men who died on the Edmond Fitzgerald. He also gave the families all the proceeds from the song. He was an incredible artist but more importantly be was an incredible man. If anyone deserves to go to heaven it's him. Rest in peace Mr. Lightfoot. Canada thanks you and we will grieve you
Indeed. A very well written excerpt of this extremly amazing man with a heart of gold. Gordon Meridith Lightfoot, you will be missed by all throughout the world over. Your work is now over, however, your memories and legacy will remain forever in our hearts and minds. We all love you, very, very much.
Rest in peace , Gordon. You are now just a little further down that highway than the rest of us. May your voice haunt the world in its beautiful way, forever.
RIP Gordon. Thank you for making my childhood amazing. So many memories listening to your music while riding in the car with my grandparents. Such an amazing singer and songwriter!!
Rest in Peace Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. Glad I got a chance to meet you during your sound check, at a theatre in downtown Toronto. I had taken a package to Alan Thicke at the theatre as i know the Thicke family, and Alan introduced me to Gordan.
Gordon Lightfoots song 'If you could read my mind love ' is an absolute masterpiece , beautiful, powerful and charming to the point of being borderline hypnotic .His serious yet loving approach has influenced popular music in the 60s and 70s and to this day . A timeless balladeer who's haunting lyrics will capture the hearts of future generations .
Love me some Gordon Lightfoot, epic, timeless music. Thankyou for your contribution to the craft. RIPeace to pave the way for your great compatriots in Heaven
Gordon Lightfoot was 84 years old. I was blessed to have met him 6 years ago. He autographed my book,Lightfoot. I reside in his hometown of Orillia. His funeral and burial are happening this Sunday May 7th in Orillia.
You're absolutely right.....Good evening Kimberley how are you doing over there hope you're having a wonderful day it's a lovely day that the lord has made
The music of Edmund Fitzgerald was so picturesque you could remove the brilliant lyrics and envision an old wooden ship perilously struggling through rough seas.
I remember always hearing him on the radio. Like it was said that in this news report that music was his only therapy. Gordon Lightfoot was right about that because music makes a person feel good. He sang such beautiful songs and possessed that gift as a singer and songwriter.
Had tickets for him last year before he had to cancel. Another icon I didn,t go see. If there are any musicians 😢😢 from the sixty’s and seventy’s go see them before it’s to late.
Gordon Lightfoot never left Canada 🍁 He made it without going State side...He is a true Canadian Hero and will be sadly missed 😢 I grew up listening to him on the radio with every summer at the family cottage, just outside of Orillia... First heard a Lightfoot song over 50 years ago when a fellow high school student sang If You Could Read My Mind at a school concert. I was hooked right then and bought that album and all the others. (I do need a replacement CD for the one that has his original recording of Song for a Winter's Night; part of my CD with that song is scratched a bit.) Tho I loved the songs that were major hits for him, so many other songs of his were also personal favorites -- Home from the Forest, Triangle, Too Late for Praying, Walls, Long Way Back Home, Shadows, Don Quixote, etc. etc. etc. too many to list. Which one is my favorite at a given time depends on my mood that moment. We were so lucky to have been graced with such a poetic songwriter with such a beautiful voice.

perfect summation ... the "B sides" were as good as the A's - every song on every album was brilliant ... &&& many many unreleased ... Eternal Blessings Gordon !!!
Bob Dylan admitted that he thought Gordon Lightfoot was the best songwriter.
Shame that Gordon never won a Grammy, or election into the R&R Hall of Fame. He is immortal, iconic, and deserves every accolade a musician can get.
Rock and roll hall of fame is a joke they put alot of people in it that don't deserve it Gordan Lightfoot does.
