I got my border collie from a shelter and she is now an amazing service dog that loves to run around in my backyard (I live on horse property so she has tons of space) and swim in the pool.
One of my most favorite dog breeds I've ever wanted in life, When I get lonely. I have a Big snow white/electric blue eyed Giant Alaskan malamute male and a jumbo sized Maltese Yorkie mix and they're both just the coolest. But anything fluffy I'll most definitely take a border collie (female)
I have a beaut collie - must exercise him more- He used to help me bring the wood to the door for the fire, but one day he picked up a wide piece and couldn't get through the gate area - so he dropped it and hardly helps me but he gets the newspaper sometimes!! haha
Alex they can get destructive, how often alone are you talking? I had one that would get separation anxiety and would eat walls and doors and we wouldn’t be gone long :(
In the summer I work outside all day as an ecologist so theres lots of opportunity for him to come to work with me, but there would be some days that he would need to stay home alone and that could be 12h or more. In the winter its harder to bring him to work. Sounds like indoors might be an issue, but would it be better if he had a yard to run around in all day?
That really didn't get into the needs of the border collie very much. Sure, lip service was given to "high energy" and "needs something to do" but it really didn't get into the attention this breed needs in order to be healthy and well adjusted. We're talking miles and miles of exercise a day; constant tasks and very little sleep for the human.
I stand to disagree. I have a working line border and guess what? He's happy to laze and sleep around for 20+ hours, with the most daily walking distance being 10 km, and an average of 5 - 7,5 km. He doesn't need any extra exercise but is happy and excited if I toss in a fetch, frisbee, training or agility session in there. Almost all borders I've heard of, most of which are working lines, are the exact same. I highly believe they are what you make them. They grow to fit any mold, so if you allow them to exercise all day, that's what they're going to demand. Their smartness, coupled with their everlasting stamina and obsessiveness allows them to take advantage and manipulate people into exercising them all day, but they in no way REQUIRE it to be healthy and well adjusted. My boy is just as obsessive and intense as any other border, the difference is that I've never allowed him to push me or other people into giving him what he wants. He knows what "that's all" means, gets exercise on my terms, not on his and for this reason, he has an impeccable off-switch, hence the 20+ hours of chill lounging around the house (he's sleeping under the table as I'm writing this). And before anyone goes to tell me he's just a low energy border, I'll say this: If I let him, he would run after a frisbee/ball/whatever until he has a heatstroke. If I let him, he would become pushy about it. IF I LET HIM, he would express his excitement in destructive ways, including, but not limited to, demanding exercise 24/7. The key point here is the fact that he knows it's not okay. He knows I don't play by his rules. It's as simple as that, and in return, you get a stable, calm dog who is ready to work whenever you are. A true man's best friend, not a working machine who doesn't know how to stop. If you have a border collie and he/she is demanding hours upon hours upon hours of exercise and tasks, you've created a monster. You've created a capable canine who grew to fit the mold which you've shaped. It's by your own doing that you've allowed him/her to become a hyper workaholic. It's not always a bad thing, there are people who are similarly sportsy and love these types of dogs, but it's not the breed! They are simply predisposed to a high degree of obsessiveness which WILL result in constant nagging if you're not careful.
Superstitious Pyalicious so, you're entire premise is that _your_ BC is differently from the norm and so BCs in general must conform to your BC's standard?
I did happen to mention there are other working border collie owners who are experiencing the same thing, yes? Head over to the border collie forums and you'll see how most owners are in the same boat as me and none of them EVER suggest over exercising a border to the point that you MUST give the dog hours upon hours of exercise in order to receive a sane moment. The same goes to all of the borders that train at the same agility club as us. This is a dog with the potential to have near unlimited stamina. If you offer them boundless exercise, do you expect anything else? You've literally said it takes miles and miles, constant tasks AND very little sleep. I'm sorry but that's not the norm, (many people with actual jobs and social lives have borders) however, advising people that it is will result in even more thousands of borders abandoned because people can't handle what they've essentially conditioned their dog to be. Once conditioned to "need" so much exercise, it's hard to undo it and most don't have the resources to keep it up. This is not a dog that should be left 24/7 in the yard, not a dog that should spend his entire day alone, but it's not an over the top dog, it's not a tornado on paws. It's a highly attuned companion who becomes whatever you want him to be, whether an agility beast, a marathon runner who runs days and nights with you or simply, a good friend who thrives from human interaction. Moderation and boundaries is all it takes. And of course, here's a couple sources of these said "owners" which I keep mentioning. I didn't just go and make them up in my head ;) Several people in the thread below agree on the same thing. Excessive exercise is not required. www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=39645 Waffles (post #2) makes the same point as me, along with several other people in this thread: www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=38915 LauraV (post #7) mentions her two borders don't have particularly high exercise needs: www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=38889 Gloria Atwater (post #7) mentions precisely what I've been saying above: www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=38815 Denice (#4),CptJack (#6) and Geonni Banner (#8) all have very good points in the thread below; Alternatively, Root Beer (#9) also makes a good point. Some borders ARE wired to be hyper and over the top, but it's not the norm and these dogs wouldn't be capable of achieving their roles as sheep herders, as they're incapable of focusing properly. www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=38618 Laurelin (#30) makes an incredibly good point here: www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=38464&page=2 And so on. The forum is full of similar posts and threads. Border Collies are decent dogs which, YES, aren't for your average dog owner (many of which don't even take their dogs out more than 10 mins per day), but they're not the horror filled storms who absolutely NEED to be catered to every single moment of their lives, nor are they dogs who REQUIRE tons of miles in order to live with them, or hours and hours of fetching or exercising.
border collies are the *BEST* dog breed!
They are
The one dog that's cuter when older.

Aaa I'm starting the search for a BC in 3 days to become my service dog, I'm so excited!
but I can't even get a fish or any other pet so how am I supposed to get a border collie
I want a border collie
Great, but you need to be up super early, and walk them four times a day. Once you can do that, they are the best in the World.
A job? One job? Mine had five - and he still got bored.
If you don't give them jobs, then they will find jobs to do. Not great if you have expensive vintage furniture.

+Jason ON Looks like they are just talking about show lines, which are nowhere near as intense
Sheruza TheLoser, exactly my point.
