Tom Waits performs "Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis" from the album 'Blue Valentine' with a "Silent Night" intro live at Austin City Limits in 1978
Christmas 2023 series (5 of 9) I never really got my dad’s affection for Tom Waits growing up, but I get it now (though it’s still hard to really put into words with that voice of his). This first appeared on his 1978 album Blue Valentine (though he performs it live as a medley with a different song, in this case Silent Night). This is towards the end of his early period which is mostly blues, jazz and spoken word, but his later stuff gets more dark and heavy; a lot of American doom metal or doom folk groups credit him as an influence.

Tom Waits is a genius. I rest my case.
...nuff said.
100%
No one can tell a story like Tom Waits, he's a beat poet, an American treasure.
This song, as done here, leads the listener along, into thinking 'ha ha, how funny' and then suddenly finding out just how tragic the story really is. Like a kick in the guts.
Tom Waits writes about the unfortunate, the dispossessed, the forgotten, and the ignored, and he does it so well.
Tom Waits speaks to my soul
"I'm so horny, the crack of dawn better watch out.''
Tom Waits
"Well I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy", also Tom Waits lol
The piano has been drinking. Not me.
He can make you laugh and cry all in one song.
You don't have enough experience of life to listen to this song, much less to respond to it with any value.
Tom Waits has a way of making me feel at home. Jim
Small Change got rained on with his own .38.
No more eggnog for you.
You beat me to this one, GWC. Great choice! So I was asked to put in a alternate, so naturally, I chose Brahms, lol! I tried to sell it to Suzi and Travis the same way I would try to sell Tom Waits. The best I could do was translate the title from German into folksy English. They probably won’t be convinced, lol, but I’ll let you be the judge. Merry Christmas!
Silent night began and ended it so it wouldn’t have been a quick transfer to the next song.
Jethro tulls xmas album is gem! Play god rest ye merry gentlemen.
Waits is a god!!!
