The difference between YOU and SIDE REINS

  • Have you ever looked at your horse in admiration as he is trotting along on side reins, so loose and elastic, so through the back and round, while you're lungeing him and wondered why you can't replicate that? You think, "Why doesn't my horse look as good as he does while he is being lunged with side reins as he does with me?!" Remember this: side reins are perfect; riders are not. Side reins set boundaries for the horse to operate within but they never become rigid or held too long or make mistakes like riders can. Watch this and don't be so hard on yourself. ;)

I've got something to say abt this, the problem with side reins is that they can't give in like a rider hand, the horse is fixed in a position we want to reach at the end of a riding session. A horse will never be completely loose, have a positive tension and a correctly rounded back with side reins, plus that the horse goes easily behind the vertical with them when it lowers it's head. And when they are that loose that the horse doesn't get behind the vertical, the horse still gets yanks on the bit/nose due to the weight and self movement if the side reins
So, side reins are absolutely not perfect and can lead to damage in the whole body and i'd rather have a horse in an unforced unhealthy position due to wrong riding than in a fixed wrong position due to side reins😊
