- The A.V. Club went to Pitchfork Music Festival over the weekend and met up with a dozen bands, musicians, and artists while there. In the spirit of the festival’s parent site, we asked the acts we met with to rate everyday things using the Pitchfork scale (0.0 to 10.0). Today we get a taste of Jeff Rosenstock’s relentless positivity. He was a fan of almost everything we threw at him, including coconut LaCroix, Jimmy Fallon, and Smash Mouth.

very poetic it ends on him giving capitalism a 10 and it immediately cuts to an advertisement to buy his album that has songs dedicated to hating capitalism. wild stuff
I mean he kinda invented the "pay what you want" format....
Sorry to break it to you kiddo, but musicians deserve a living wage.

CAPITALISM ROCKS 10.0
BUY WORRY FROM SIDEONE DUMMY
It's not until we benefit from the fruits of capitalism that have the mental energy left over to be able to criticize it. Yet again, I don't go to Jeff for his economics as much as I do for his brilliant music.
Great line: "Nostalgia is great. How else can you be sad about being alive currently while remembering your past inaccurately."
llamasarus1 karl Marx himself said capitalism brings massive development. The point is that now the bad outweighs the good and we need something else
Which of them do we have other than free education and perhaps the progressive income tax? Regardless, they're only steps which are supposed to lead to communism eventually, which he acknowledged to be different depending on the country (suggesting they would have changed in the hundreds of years since writing). Communism is when the means of production are owned collectively and there is no money or state, which is obviously not what we have now
Roan Lill-Bovill We already have 5th plank which is the centralization of credit in the hands of the state which is the Federal Reserve (supposedly ‘private’ yet they’re state-sanctioned and collude with the state) which has already caused recessions, bubbles, bailouts, cronyism, funds trillion dollar wars and has wrecked the purchasing power of our currency....they’re the hidden villain of most of the things we scapegoat on capitalism..
Those who support the Death tax is toying with the 3rd plank....
To lighter degrees Plank 6 would apply to the FCC, Amtrak , US postal service, Department of transportation when it comes to the centralization communication and transportation...
We might have different solutions but we probably have shared goals and that’s all that matters..
As I understand banks give credit and the federal reserve gives credit to banks, in which case credit isn't centralised. What causes recessions is an open question and I suspect is has most to do with capitalism itself. Even if you think they come to be because of cronyism or any specific bad government policy within capitalism, you might ask why the government carries out this specific policy. The government is influenced by money, and in capitalism, oligopolies naturally form and money ends up being concentrated immensely in the hands of a few. Of course these people are going to use this money to influence government and change policy for their interests. Crony capitalism is the natural result of capitalism.
In any event, I'm sure we do have shared goals and that is certainly worth something.
Roan Lill-Bovill And the Fed artificially lowers the interest rates which the central banks lend the credit out to corporations and lenders which causes bubbles and recessions....the Fed is a government sanctioned monopoly....not a private actor competing in a market economy...and neither are the banks when the government bails then out...under a capitalist system they wouldn’t exist and interest rates would be determined by the the amount of savings depositors have deposited so we’d conserve resources and be more incentivized to only to take out loans when depositors increase their savings..
Yes money becomes concentrated in the hands of the few because the Fed inflates our currency and practically hands it to the richest among us while the inflation adjusted prices trickles down slowly to get to the poorest among us while their cost of living rises...there’s a reason why the counties surrounding Wall Street and DC are the riches county’s in the country...Corporatism...
Limit the government to do its sole function of protecting our rights, person and property and keep them separate from business so the corporatism can end ( or which you misdefine as capitalism.)
All capitalism is is private actors with skin in the game investing their capital in the equipment and labor to produce goods and services (I.E. wealth) which they compete with other private actors for cost, quantity and quality to profit in a market economy.....End the Fed, lift all taxes and regulations that impeded wealth creation for businesses (wealth is NOT money...wealth is the volume and quality of goods and services..frequent misconception) so prices will fall and we can afford more to live on....
I think we mostly agree and I guess this is more of a quibble on the definition and technicalities more than in principle...
Communism - 10/10 would starve again
Great meme. Now what do think of reality in which almost every developing country has adopted neoliberal policies? World hunger solved, yeah?
I live in america man. I know how it feels to be poor in a broken system.
‘nothing you can do about it’ ... centrist king ):
Take a look at the lyrics for HELLLLHOOOOLE, if you haven't already.
@Non Compos Mentis "And profit from the pain"? That lyric quite fairly and exclusively talks about capitalism.
@Non Compos Mentis "profit". It's quite clearly talking about Capitalism, and I don't think Rosenstock is a Stalinist.
@Non Compos Mentis the right doesn’t hate the government, don’t kid yourself, they just hate when the government gives money to poor people
@Non Compos Mentis lmao. I’ve met many conservatives, a lot of which are my friends. The whole philosophy revolves around preserving the status quo, not self ownership and keeping the government out of people’s lives. The only people who’s lives are unaffected by the conservative government are the rich who write the philosophy
The hardest part of being conservative is learning the politics of all the artists you like.
Isaac Alstrin no and it hurts every time.
Michael Sethman have you literally ever heard a Jeff Rosenstock song ever? And you didn’t realize he would hate capitalism? Lolol
I liked bomb the music industry when I was in high school and didn't really have an opinion of politics. 13 years later I have a wife and kids and responsibilities that force me to be a slave to a job I don't like. I can still relate to a lot of his music and even if I couldn't, I still appreciate talent. Anyways it's not just punk rock musicians that lean to the left politically. The vast majority of artists in general are liberal. It's just a little disappointing for me every time... like when I learned shawn Harris of the matches was a vegan. Obviously it's not a big deal. Everyone is entitled to their views. Jeff rosenstock has definitely lived a different life than I have, we see things through a different lens, but I still get depressed and let down the people I love. I still get that feeling when you hear a song and you feel like the artist knows exactly what you're going through. They're so much better at expressing the feeling than I could ever hope to. Capitalism is good though. Greed is the driving force that creates all the things we love.
If you like these artists and can relate so much to what they say, maybe you should slowly starts to reconsider your political views ? :)
Nicobola123 I dont think those things go as hand in hand as you might think man. I can listen to a song like the lows and even though I may be interpreting the song wrong, I feel like I can relate to it so much. That doesn't mean I have to hate capitalism and be a feminist. Somehow society has become so unreasonable. I think the path we take through life dictates our perspective. I grew up in a home apathetic to politics, I leaned liberal in high school which I feel was sort of by default. I ended up going to church to meet girls and found myself liking the conservative messages more than the God ones. I became a mechanic and got married at a young age. I've spent the majority of my adult life working at least two jobs. It's hard for me to have sympathy for people that want something for nothing because I've always sacrificed my time happiness and sweat to get by. Had my life gone differently maybe I would see the world through a different lens. I think society could really benefit from wearing each others shoes instead of just throwing them at eachother.
he is good,I'm not discussing this, but do you see vaguely an honest autism behind his smile?
Wtf dude
Culturally inappropriate??? Can we please stop worrying about everyones feelings? Yuck!
caring about people's feelings is actually very good
god i love jeff
