Episode 33 Strip-Till Struggles and a New Geringoff Corn Head

- We start of with a demo of a geringoff patriot corn head that is now our new corn head. Then we have a week full of attempting to strip-till with an environmental tillage soil warrior that we are leasing for the fall. That is being pulled by our John Deere 9620RX
I work putting these together now. I love it and am learning lots. Awesome to see them at work.

Also, I use a Trimble system, no issues in 6000ac so far over the last 2 years. Maybe the Deere dry rate control system will work better with your Deere tractor
Had some issues with the machine during the premier. Doesn’t pull too bad but I have a 620 horse tractor on a 40ft tool
how deep are you running your shanks? Great footage on the soil warrior. We are firm believers in strip till and just upgraded from our 16R30 Kuhn Krause Gladiator to a custom 24 row bar that we had built. Hoping to be able to pull the 24 row at 70-7.5 mph running 7 inches deep with a 9560RT that's turned up to 670hp. Great video!
Nevermind! After watching the video I see it's a coulter strip setup, and not a shank style.

Tillage man Sam showed millennial farmer a John Deere version of the soil warrior in latest video. Looks like there is a partnership there forming with the two companies and I assume the green version will be more integrated with JD monitors/tractors?

If you go into strip till with a negative attitude, it will fail because you are looking for any reason for it to fail. You need to be looking at how to make it succeed. You might need to make adjustments as you go. My family has been strip tilling and banding fertilizer in the strip for 25 years. In high yielding soil with good fertility, you will not see a yield benefit from strip till necessarily. In average soil with low fertility, you will definitely see a yield advantage with strip till and banding. Over time with strip till/no-till, you will see that the water holding capacity of your soil will greatly increase. This will show up in dry years. You will out yield growers who till by about 30 bu/ac in corn. If you switch to strip till, I recommend in-line ripping your whole field the first year and then in-line ripping your end rows for the first 3 years. This will hopefully eliminate any compaction from tillage.
Lots of good info there. Always wanting the new stiff we try to succeed. The ground we are trying this in ground that’s had all kinds of tillage practices on it including an in-line ripper. It will have to show a yield advantage to stick around to justify the time and expense spent on it. Just hope there’s not a negative yield effect like I’ve heard from two people that tried one this spring.
We have a couple test from this spring with a shank machine but have only harvested one and it was no difference.
It does make sense to me that the biggest advantage would be in a dry year. Where you from?

we are in our 4th season of strip tillage. seen years its better than conventional and others its not as good, averaging the yrs out it looks to be the same. Just my opinion but if your looking only for the yield advantage you could perhaps consider changing your perspective on it. The benefits are not necessarily yield. For our farm the benefits are 1, its faster than ripping ground in the fall and than making a pass in the spring with a digger. 2, no more application costs to the local elevator/applicator. 3, after 2-3 years you will notice your ground swallow water up much faster after rains. June- July if we get an inch-2 inch of rain we are able to go the field a day sooner with the sprayer than the neighbors because our farms are pulling down more water faster. also able to plant our strips a day or so before the neighbors can get there diggers in to work the fall ripped ground. more we do strip tillage, more im convinced tillage makes more compaction than we think it does. 4, also we got rid of both our four wheel drive tractors when we went to strip til. do about 1000 acres of strip tillage each fall with a 12 row machine on a 8345rt takes about a week for one guy. Gotta give it 3-4 years without working the ground with conventional tillage to really begin to see the benefits just my opinion. Great videos look forward to watching more!

I’m a dairy farmer with more manure than I have acres. I’ve got neighbors that will be more than happy to take it for nothing, but I’d love to hear “boss man’s” opinion on the value of manure. I realize he would need a nutrient analysis on it before he would be able to give me an answer, but just curious if you’ve ever gotten an offer to buy manure from a livestock operation?

Liked it but too time consuming and we don’t have the man power. Still like the idea of it

He usually runs around 5000
Trucks have a hard time keeping up with that

A little but no more than the case
We did a demo with a Deere one a couple years ago and I think it may have been the best for head loss
Glad to hear it. Some hybrids can get bad.
they are good heads and will run forever. have some local guys that run 4k acres a year through theirs with not to much trouble.

Seriously look at a Montag fert box if your gonna strip till. Feed rolls are all stainless steel. Very accurate. Also add a hiniker row flow monitor. It will tell you if you have a plugged line. Those strips look pretty flat for fall almost too flat. Not a fan of soil warrior here. Just my $.02
I also wondered why these weren’t stainless and yeah there’s not a lot of hump on these.
I’m going to look into the montag, I’m thinking dawns uses that but may be wrong.
I do like the way this leaves the dirt and being able to variable rate 3 products at once

Loose that Raven controller. Just put the deere Rc Dry on it. Not the RC2000 from deere. The 1st Dry Rate Controller is the one you want

I'm going to bet you a dollar that for all the time, effort and expense you are putting into that machine you are going to find that it does not make enough difference to justify itself.

I beg the differ. Strip till has proven yield benefits over conventional tillage and allows for much more consistent planting conditions (If putting fall strips in). We have seen as much as 15 bu./ac. difference in the same exact soil in favor of strip till over conventional.
