  • Basketball highlights of Canadian Karl Tilleman against Uruguay on August 3rd during the 1984 Olympics.
Tilleman played exceptionally well in this game. He scored 12 points, all of which were at crucial moments to bring Canada close to tying the score or to give Canada the lead. Tilleman also shot an impressive 6/12 (50%) from the field. As the announcers noted multiple times in these Olympics games, Tilleman likely led all 1984 Olympians in points scored per minutes played.
Tilleman was a prolific Canadian basketball player. He is a four-time Olympic record holder. On September 21, 1988, Tilleman scored seven (7) 3-pointers against Egypt, six (6) of which in the first half. This tied the Olympic record for most 3-point field goals made in a game and broke the Olympic record for most 3-point field goals made in a half.
In his next game on September 23, 1988, Tilleman hit ten (10) 3-pointers against Spain, eight (8) of which in the second half. In doing so, Tilleman broke his records of most 3-pointers made in a half and in a game. Neither record has been broken to this day.
Unsurprisingly, Tilleman has been described as "the best three-point shooter in the world" by FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame coach Jack Donohue. Similarly, Canadian Basketball Hall of Famer Brian Heaney stated that "there has never been a finer shooter in Canadian basketball history than Karl Tilleman".
Tilleman was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the 1984 draft, being the 4th highest draft pick of any Canadian university basketball player in history. Tilleman was also recognized as the best Canadian university basketball player two years in a row, the first to accomplish that feat. Tilleman averaged 32.9 points per game during one university season, before the implementation of the three-point line in Canadian university basketball. Tilleman holds the highest free-throw percentage of any American or Canadian university player in a season, only missing one free-throw in the entire 1983-84 season for a 98% free-throw percentage. Tilleman was also a member of the Canadian team that won the gold medal in the 1983 World Student Games.
Tilleman was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, the Canada West Hall of Fame and was voted as the greatest athlete in the history of the University of Calgary by a considerable margin.
