But there are eastern church’s with an unbroken line of deaconesses from apostolic times - the Arminian and the Russian Orthodox Church’s - and many have revived their female diaconates more recently like Greece. As long as we weren’t talking of priesthood or a diaconate of the same order as men there is a lot of eastern precedent for it - so much so it could even be seen as part of Romes realignment towards certain eastern customs

First of all, even if the interviewer did bring up the term "white flag" there's absolutely NO reason whatsoever why the pope should "pick up the word(s)". In fact, that was the perfect moment for the Pope to respond exactly in the manner the Ukrainians said to the Nuncio .... In fact, so egregious is the Pope's failure to utterly condemn Russia - irrespective of his position as a "non Western leader (which diminishes the Pope to merely the ruler of a secular country - it is a purely political thing to say) - his primary role, especially to non Catholics, followers of other religions and none - is to be a beacon of moral virtue, leading by example, unbuffeted by earthly turbulence and commanding respect from all quarters. Furthermore, even if there IS an ulterior motive for the West (headed by the USA) that's hardly the point, is it? No one whatsoever denies that this is a war of naked aggression, against international law and the sole cause of countless hundreds of deaths per day - and perhaps even worse, rape, torture and the kidnapping of children, their transport into Russia and their adoption by Russian parents and to forget their own language, culture and identity. John, it is absolutely horrifying - and I feel extremely disappointed in someone who I believed was much more interested in being a fearless and exemplary Christian and not involving himself with politicking. I always thought he pointedly set aside the trappings of his position exactly to show he did not consider himself an exalted person - rather one interested only in promoting peace, tolerance, justice and love - not to appease both sides of a fight where one party is so clearly the aggressor. He would do well to recall that no fewer than five of his predecessors from 1870- 1929 spent the entirety of their reigns sulking inside the Vatican, refusing to leave and referring to themselves as "prisoners" because the Papal States had been absorbed into Italy during unification. Again, with the Papacy itself materially affected by stronger countries grabbing territory from its weaker neighbours, one would have thought for that reason alone, Papal sympathies would have been with Ukraine. As far as the legality of the issue, furthermore, it's not really something on which the Pope is even entitled to an opinion - it is a settled matter, under international law (also, incidentally, a law uncriticized at the time as unfair or unjust. No one within the Vatican complained about it at all so we can therefore take as read that the Holy See's silence on the topic after 1991 meant it had no objections to Ukraine's right to be its own sovereign country?). Presumably, popes subscribe to the notion that international law is valid? And presumably popes see the inherent rightness of the international community creating such a framework - one which is designed so that everyone is clear about what the rules are, agrees to be bound by them and that they are enforced for everyone's security and well-being - and that countries which break them are at fault? The Pope and his advisors must surely be aware of the dozens of Treaties which Russia has already broken so why they think any sort of negotiated peace would be a stable, long term solution is extraordinary.... It does not seem that complicated. It's not like Northern Ireland here which was - remains - a moral maze. Of all the major wars of the past 500 years, surely this one is the easiest and most obvious to define who is not just legally wronged, but morally too? The Pope's failure to acknowledge this and to demand Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine, is dissembling and equivocating - and leaves Francis wide open to similar criticism levelled at Pius XII and his behaviour throughout WW2 - He may well have helped thousands of Jews - but he also bargained with the Devil to get the Nazis not to bomb Rome. He also conceded to German bishops the right to be Nazi party members. And I get how dangerous the times were - I guess in some instances it was merely expeditious for prelates to be members so as to fly under the radar... Again though, many were not merely looking for cover but joined our of conviction, hardly therefore a good look for the Church either then or in hindsight. As for "staying neutral"(even with the "noble" intentions of creating possible conditions that Russia would trust the Holy See to be an impartial mediator) well, as already said, there IS no neutral and thus for the Vatican to act like there is, is at least dishonest and at worst, an absolutely shameful avoidance of standing up for the rights of the wronged. Whether America is helping Ukraine or not, is also irrelevant - it doesn't change either the legal nor moral landscape. I think it's a great pity, as the Pope draws ever closer to his twilight, that such a misjudgement as this could shade all his other endeavours. While you admire him for his refusal to be diverted from his course, nearly everyone else just sees a misguided, naive and stubborn old man, doubling down on bad decisions...

The fallacy of ecumenical relations especially between the Vatican and Anglicans is just so obvious. Leo XIII decreed that Anglican Orders are Invalid….that teaching from Rome has not changed, been amended or cancelled. Yet now we have Anglican ‘women priests and bishops’, all created within that group in the last 30 years. And recently the pope invited a ‘woman bishop’ to attend the regular 9 cardinals meeting in the vatican. This was really an insult, a scandal to Catholics. There can not be women priests or bishops and how such can ever add to a Catjolic meeting is baffling, gobsmacking for sure. It is a scandal. Yes. And yet this pontiff has done it, much like the guillotinining of the great liturgy of centuries which had been horrendous. And on this synod the main decision concerned the abandonment of the synodality of the church and return to the Patriarch model? That the Russian Orthodox church admitted that the synodality model though giving bishops more say about the church at the same time had made the lay authority of the Tsar supreme? Thus it was the lay person, the Tsar who was the head of the church, not the clerics? That such model led to the tyranny of the Bolsheviks and Communists? That, as history has proved, the return to Patriarchy saved the Church from extinction? And now our Pope attempts to tell us that the synodality is the panacea for all the ills of the world! What an irony!
1) I’m glad the Pope is standing up to Ukraine and the West. Ukraine has rejected negotiated peace since the beginning. Anyone who is adamantly against negotiations almost deserves war. 2) Good job to the Coptic Orthodox Church for standing up to Pope Francis and all the other weak Catholics who are promoting blessings of gay couples and normalizing lgbt relationships. We need strong defenders of orthodoxy right now in the world and the Coptic Orthodox Church is leading the way to promoting the true faith in the midst of heresy. We should take note and encourage Catholic bishops to not be afraid to stand up for the true faith.

Did everyone thought about the fact, that he is not believed, because he lost credibility? Right now, is the Ukraine situation, but there are several other situations and people see these things. For once I apparently agree with thrbpope's general direction on this. The urgency for something which will hault the March to a possible wider war in Eastern Eutope. The "war lobby" in Washington/ Ukraine/London and the general international movement. The observation, in sane circles, has increasingly been made that the way the world got into the disastrous World War One. But now its a world with nuclear weapons. The Church has advocated, while condemming the Russian invasion, exploratory talks. The basic statement for talks two months. Many have called for talks but ALSO keeping Ukraine NEUTRAL and NOT some kind of NATO corridor closer to the Russia. The pope has been a more moderate voice in this direction. But Everyone should be praying for peace at this point.
What exactly should Ukraine negotiate about? If someone were attacked on the street, would the victim be obligated to negotiate with the assailant about how much he/she can be beaten?

This cannot be achieved as long as Russia occupies about a fifth of Ukraine's territories and offers peace on terms that would essentially strip Ukraine of its self-determination. Russia must be persuaded to abandon its intentions. Secondly, for peace negotiations to make any sense, there should be roughly equal arguments at the negotiating table. This is certainly not the case here. As I mentioned, Ukraine essentially has everything at stake, whereas Russia faces no threat in any scenario.

Am I only one who remembers it this way. In the movies of my youth a white flag usually meant "lets talk ”. A rider from one side of the battlefield waved the flag and then received permission to address the other side. In the interest of fair play a white flag meant I won't shoot at you please don't shoot at me. And then when the results of the talks needed to be returned to the other side, the rider galloped across the field to rejoin their troops. If this were the context a white flag doesn't necessarily mean surrender, it means let's talk or in other words let's negotiate. The willingness to negotiate can be a courageous move.

No one whatsoever denies that this is a war of naked aggression, against international law and the sole cause of countless hundreds of deaths per day - and perhaps even worse, rape, torture and the kidnapping of children, their transport into Russia and their adoption by Russian parents and to forget their own language, culture and identity. John, it is absolutely horrifying - and I feel extremely disappointed in someone who I believed was much more interested in being a fearless and exemplary Christian and not involving himself with politicking. I always thought he pointedly set aside the trappings of his position exactly to show he did not consider himself an exalted person - rather one interested only in promoting peace, tolerance, justice and love - not to appease both sides of a fight where one party is so clearly the aggressor. He would do well to recall that no fewer than five of his predecessors from 1870- 1929 spent the entirety of their reigns sulking inside the Vatican, refusing to leave and referring to themselves as "prisoners" because the Papal States had been absorbed into Italy during unification. Again, with the Papacy itself materially affected by stronger countries grabbing territory from its weaker neighbours, one would have thought for that reason alone, Papal sympathies would have been with Ukraine. As far as the legality of the issue, furthermore, it's not really something on which the Pope is even entitled to an opinion - it is a settled matter, under international law (also, incidentally, a law uncriticized at the time as unfair or unjust. No one within the Vatican complained about it at all so we can therefore take as read that the Holy See's silence on the topic after 1991 meant it had no objections to Ukraine's right to be its own sovereign country?). Presumably, popes subscribe to the notion that international law is valid? And presumably popes see the inherent rightness of the international community creating such a framework - one which is designed so that everyone is clear about what the rules are, agrees to be bound by them and that they are enforced for everyone's security and well-being - and that countries which break them are at fault? The Pope and his advisors must surely be aware of the dozens of Treaties which Russia has already broken so why they think any sort of negotiated peace would be a stable, long term solution is extraordinary....
It does not seem that complicated. It's not like Northern Ireland here which was - remains - a moral maze. Of all the major wars of the past 500 years, surely this one is the easiest and most obvious to define who is not just legally wronged, but morally too? The Pope's failure to acknowledge this and to demand Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine, is dissembling and equivocating - and leaves Francis wide open to similar criticism levelled at Pius XII and his behaviour throughout WW2 - He may well have helped thousands of Jews - but he also bargained with the Devil to get the Nazis not to bomb Rome. He also conceded to German bishops the right to be Nazi party members. And I get how dangerous the times were - I guess in some instances it was merely expeditious for prelates to be members so as to fly under the radar... Again though, many were not merely looking for cover but joined our of conviction, hardly therefore a good look for the Church either then or in hindsight.
As for "staying neutral"(even with the "noble" intentions of creating possible conditions that Russia would trust the Holy See to be an impartial mediator) well, as already said, there IS no neutral and thus for the Vatican to act like there is, is at least dishonest and at worst, an absolutely shameful avoidance of standing up for the rights of the wronged. Whether America is helping Ukraine or not, is also irrelevant - it doesn't change either the legal nor moral landscape.
I think it's a great pity, as the Pope draws ever closer to his twilight, that such a misjudgement as this could shade all his other endeavours. While you admire him for his refusal to be diverted from his course, nearly everyone else just sees a misguided, naive and stubborn old man, doubling down on bad decisions...

The fallacy of ecumenical relations especially between the Vatican and Anglicans is just so obvious. Leo XIII decreed that Anglican Orders are Invalid….that teaching from Rome has not changed, been amended or cancelled. Yet now we have Anglican ‘women priests and bishops’, all created within that group in the last 30 years. And recently the pope invited a ‘woman bishop’ to attend the regular 9 cardinals meeting in the vatican. This was really an insult, a scandal to Catholics. There can not be women priests or bishops and how such can ever add to a Catjolic meeting is baffling, gobsmacking for sure. It is a scandal. Yes. And yet this pontiff has done it, much like the guillotinining of the great liturgy of centuries which had been horrendous. And on this synod the main decision concerned the abandonment of the synodality of the church and return to the Patriarch model? That the Russian Orthodox church admitted that the synodality model though giving bishops more say about the church at the same time had made the lay authority of the Tsar supreme? Thus it was the lay person, the Tsar who was the head of the church, not the clerics? That such model led to the tyranny of the Bolsheviks and Communists? That, as history has proved, the return to Patriarchy saved the Church from extinction? And now our Pope attempts to tell us that the synodality is the panacea for all the ills of the world! 1) I’m glad the Pope is standing up to Ukraine and the West. Ukraine has rejected negotiated peace since the beginning. Anyone who is adamantly against negotiations almost deserves war.
2) Good job to the Coptic Orthodox Church for standing up to Pope Francis and all the other weak Catholics who are promoting blessings of gay couples and normalizing lgbt relationships. We need strong defenders of orthodoxy right now in the world and the Coptic Orthodox Church is leading the way to promoting the true faith in the midst of heresy. We should take note and encourage Catholic bishops to not be afraid to stand up for the true faith.

Did everyone thought about the fact, that he is not believed, because he lost credibility? Right now, is the Ukraine situation, but there are several other situations and people see these things. He says one thing, then he does something else and in his conception that confusion is good for creativity, he doesn’t understand, that the incubation stage during the process of creation is confusing, but then something has to born. And the new thing has to have sense. If that doesn’t happen, you are perceived incongruent (someone, who doesn’t act in accordance with his believes) at best. He has an army of people to smooth communication and is a disaster every single time he opens his mouth.

The Pope is a good man but he should speak less on the Ukraine-Russia war. Interviews are not the best way for older people to communicate. They tend to do better in written form, from my experience as a 78 year old. A good show as always.
Well Francis certainly didn't enhance his image with his comments on the war in Ukraine, he damaged it but imo, he doesn't believe he misspoke!
There was a time when the Holy See exercised custody over its thoughts. Especially at a time when few thoughts ever go unpublished, it might actually be more helpful to travel the difficult road toward peace in silence.

@@Jimboken1 All wars end in some form of peace agreement, but true peace doesn't just mean the cessation of hostilities. The end result must be a peace acceptable, secure, and fair to Ukraine. This cannot be achieved as long as Russia occupies about a fifth of Ukraine's territories and offers peace on terms that would essentially strip Ukraine of its self-determination. Russia must be persuaded to abandon its intentions.
Secondly, for peace negotiations to make any sense, there should be roughly equal arguments at the negotiating table. This is certainly not the case here. As I mentioned, Ukraine essentially has everything at stake, whereas Russia faces no threat in any scenario.

Am I only one who remembers it this way. In the movies of my youth a white flag usually meant "lets talk ”. A rider from one side of the battlefield waved the flag and then received permission to address the other side. In the interest of fair play a white flag meant I won't shoot at you please don't shoot at me. And then when the results of the talks needed to be returned to the other side, the rider galloped across the field to rejoin their troops. If this were the context a white flag doesn't necessarily mean surrender, it means let's talk or in other words let's negotiate. The willingness to negotiate can be a courageous move.

- Pope Francis, as the spiritual leader and teacher, has never publicly expressed his views about the Moscow Patriarchate's attempts to provide religious inspiration and justification not only for the war in Ukraine, but for the Russian authorities' nationalistic aggressive ideas of "spiritual" supremacy of Russia and its "holy" role in the modern world as a "defender" of Christianity and "traditional" values, "Russian world", and so on.
- Pope Francis, as the spiritual leader and teacher, has never publicly offered his vision on the spiritual position of the Moscow’s Patriarch blessing a murderous war, elevating it to the status of a crusade and preaching presumed forgiveness of personal sins of all the Russian soldiers involved in this war.
- Pope Francis, as the spiritual leader and teacher, has never publicly offered a spiritual teaching on the incompatibility of Christianity and nationalism as it specifically applies to the war in Ukraine and current nationalistic tendencies in the world.
