Lynwood High School Year/Class of 1970

  • Film footage shot over a half a century ago during the 1969/1970 school year at Lynwood High School in Southern California. Some of the footage is out of focus and Kodak's film stocks were a bit contrasty and grainy back then (consumer videotape didn't exist), but what the heck, you get the idea. We had a blast.

    Sad to see what it was and what it became, we don't have a shortage of housing in California. What we have is a shortage of good neighborhoods worth living in.

      Nice and safe because the white people ensured themselves good schools, stores, parka etc. They could care less..many of them...what happened to the Black people when they moved. The good schools/ stores etc. Vanished...and the least amount of support to Blak communities as possible.

    My mom was LHS class of 1959. I believe that was the first graduating class that attended all 4 years at LHS. The year this was shot I was attending the elementary school behind LHS, Mark Twain, where my mom was our school librarian. I'm really enjoying watching this and thank you for sharing it! Can't wait to show it to my mom. Great job! Thank you!

      Sorry, I don't - only motion pictures of the school. But there are great pictures on the internet of the Food Giant supermarket (actually known throughout the country for its size!), the bowling alley, the Community Center, Sears (actually in Compton, I believe), the gigantic Adventist school (that eventually became the new high school), the water tower with "All American City" printed on the side, the Allen and Arden theaters, and more. Most interesting to me (because I drove a 1956 Ford T-Bird) is that George Barris's Car Customizing shop was on Atlantic in Lynwood (a few block from where I lived). They are famous for such creations as: the Batmobile for the television show, the Munsters Coach, the Beverly Hillbillies truck, Kitt Nightrider, the General Lee, the Monkee Mobile and more; also cars for the stars - Clark Cable, Liberace and others.

      I am so glad you were able to see your sister. When I shot this, I put all of the footage into the finished product. Unlike today when digital video is so inexpensive that it often gets edited, back then, 16mm motion picture film was somewhat expensive to buy and to then develop, so I included everything. Sorry, there are no other outtakes.

    • @luckyzert
      @luckyzert Před 5 lety +1

      Ha! Thanks for the kind words. I know both Mark Twain and Hosler very well. (I went to Hosler also; we would run to the cannon in the park and back again during P.E. - not fun -- and I had a friend who went to Mark Twain). I shot the film on Kodak 16mm Kodachrome stock (ASA 25 - so the interiors were a bit tricky) - this was well before VHS home video. The camera was a Bell and Howell "Filmo" camera. It had a turret with 3 lenses: 75mm/50mm/25mm. By the way, the City of Lynwood eventually removed the cannon in the park because it was deemed "offensive" - representing war. Give me a break, That's also why, when you take the Safari Jungle Cruise at Disneyland, they are no longer allowed to shoot blanks at the hippos in the water. "What a world!" as the Wicked Witch of the West said.

      I have no complaints. Producing advertising was my career. Although retired now, I worked for McCann-Erickson as Head of Production; they were the largest international ad agency and featured heavily in the TV series: MAD MEN. Some of the advertising I did was for the Spanish market (about 10% of what I produced): IKEA, Wells Fargo, Disneyland. We did a Coca-Cola commercial with Cantinflas...what a wonderful man. So I am happy for the Hispanic heritage and the Hispanic market (I learned the difference between Mexican, Hispanic, Latin and Spanish). Although I spent 2 years learning Spanish at Lynwood High (Mrs. Boudreau was the teacher), I didn't retain much of it, but whenever I did a Spanish commercial, everyone was nice enough to only speak English (until we shouted "roll camera...action!").
