    French traditionnal cuisine is not spicy. Salt, pepper, mustard. But there is restaurznts from all over the world including our overseas islands or from africa. The population here is very mixed so you can find everything.

    For the restaurant,the chef don’t offers you food, but an experience. His experience. It’s a complete one. If you want to change things, it’s not the chef experience anymore.
    It’s ok to not like his experience and go to others restaurants to have others experiences.
    If you want your experience…just cook your food at home😂.

    My husband is from Paris so I’ve been to France many times. They do ask you how you want your steak:). Just don’t salt and pepper until you taste it like she said. Also, I’ve found they don’t generally like hot spiced foods….hubby loves Indian food and he said it was quite bland, not spicy hot. When asked, the staff told him many of their customers wouldn’t show up if it was hot. That may be changing slowly, so I guess it depends where you are in France. Most important thing is “Bonjour madam or monsieur” when you enter any shop or restaurant. I forgot this form once and never again lol.

    yes, most restaurants will still ask you how much you'd like your meat cooked, the problem might be that not everyone has the same definitions for what is "well done" or others
    Also: you're perfectly allowed to season it more, the faux pas would be to season it more before even tasting it ;)

      It’s good to know this will not be offensive to the culture. Thanks Joseph:

      @gabrielbattais4185 Před 8 měsíci +6

      i worked as a server in paris and the problem is not the definition, it's the understanding of english, generally every server know what "well done" is because it's the most asked in english but if you ask "medium", "rare" or "medium-rare" in english it's at your own risks, you have better chance of having what you want if you say it in french.
      in order from the less cooked to the most :
      - Bleu (barely cooked)
      - Saignant (rare)
      - à point (medium-rare)
      - Bien cuit (well done) i believe "medium" is somewhere between "medium-rare" and "well done" but nobody want to annoy the cook so "medium" is generally translated in "medium-rare"

      @@TheDemouchetsREACT salt and pepper might not be offensive (I mean, except if you put the whole lot in there 😅) but tabasco might be... Because it's viewed as an another taste entirely, like you're changing the whole point of the course. Especially in traditional restaurants. But yeah... french cuisine is sometimes a little blend, except some speciality from the south. I mean the cliché about white people's food is kinda real... and french traditional cuisine comes from white people. (No hate, I'm white too, but just... when I come back to my parents who cook/and go to restaurants with only traditional french food - and maybe a little italian - I realise I was used to it but actually love indian, mexican food, and use more and more spices when cooking for myself - my mother hates when I cook for her now lol)
      Though in (good) traditional restaurants I generally find it has enough savours to not need that much seasoning.

  • @christianc9894
    @christianc9894 Před 10 měsíci +9

    Putting salt, pepper yes, we can, but sticking "Tabasco" everywhere is a major insult to our cooking. If it is essential to your survival, go to restaurants for this type of cuisine, but not to a traditional restaurant.

    I hope you go to France one day, and I really ask you to please try it without spicing or salting it before tasting it, it will not be spicy or seasoned, but you might be surprised. In the US you need to salt a lot because the food quality is terrible, i got sick when i was there my belly was heavy on the stomack all the time… but try it for real (with an open mind), you might fall in love :)

    Most restaurants will ask how you want your meat to be cooked when you are ordering a steak. However some meats, like duck, are supposed to be cooked a certain way and the chef will totally say no to any changes.

  • @Goudlock
    @Goudlock Před 7 měsíci +8

    i don't get the tabasco sauce argument here, tabasco sauce have a strong taste, (not just spycing thing up), that can alter the actual seasoning the chef already did.
    Like putting ketchup on pasta that was already in a special sauce.
    I never understood the argument off "food that doesn't make you cry is bland", sauce or texture can have a lot of flavor without being spicy tho ?

    16:00 The idea and tone you express is important (not the words you use, but the idea. We understand that people don't speak the language and can use the wrong words). It's not "You did it wrong" it's "I TRIED (very important part), it's not my taste. Cultural differencies, I didn't know. Can it be cooked longer ?". Even french people sent plates back sometimes or use tabasco/salt/pepper 🙂
    Taste is different for everybody
    And yes, we ask how people want their steak^^

  • @emjizone
    @emjizone Před 6 měsíci +2

    15:59 Yeah… knowing the cook has *studied* cooking for years in school, got two diplomas for it, and has more than 10 years of experience as a professional cook, and has received stars as a reward from various professional critics, you customer don't teach her or him.😂
    If you want to control every detail of your meal, you don't need a French restaurant: what you need in that case is a food processor, a robot.
    In France, we have to keep in mind that, although THE CUSTOMER IS KING, THE COOK IS GOD.
    Of course, you can ask for adaptations, indicate your preferences or allergies. Of course you can, and should (and will probably be asked if it matters)! But it's best to do it *before* you order, and not on a whim. Because afterwards, it's a bit too late: the job's done. *A twice-cooked steak doesn't taste the same as a once-cooked steak.*

And please, do not bring that tabasco sauce, everybody would look at you in real bad way XD.

    If you ever come to france dont worry they season your shit right but yeah it's always a good thing to tell the waiter what you like or if you have allergies and whatnot but dont worry they arent as snob as the waiter in the clip was.
    Often times they'll be embarrassed more than they'll be argumentive. Especially because they want a tip, these fancy places are valuing customer service it's within their prides. Paris is the city with the most Michelin stars in the world for a reason, right ?

    In France, sure, if you went to a restaurant, you'll choose the way of cookof your meal or meat... I mean for a steak... the waiter will ask you BEFORE.. .but if you have chosen believing it is "saignant" and in fact, it's not saignant you wanted... you will have it "saignant" and if you tell the waiter that the steak is not saignant as you wanted, it's your problem, you asked saignant, the way a professionel will cook it... Then your steak won't come back in the kitchen because YOu did a mistake. In USA, if you asked wrong and change your mind, the waiter and the chef may obeys your will, not in France.

    Emily in Paris has not been created for a French audience. It is a good TV series but it is made to attract viewers that already have a false image of Paris or France. Which is the same cause fort most foreigners France is Paris. It's not made to make people think differently or evole or discover the true Paris or France. As a French person nothing much in Emily in Paris is accurate. But it doesn't have to be it's a damn TV series. Made to entertain the mass. Not a documentary. If you want to know France, Emily in Paris is not a good way to do it. But if you want to be reassured about what you think about France is the truth then yes.
