Please don't leave us hanging on this cliff! You have taken on one of the most exciting guitarist of all time and you have done it with reverence and an excellent lesson !! Please continue this lesson on into the song. I have to say, you are such a talented player and instructor and a joy to sit in the "room" with you and learn. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much Joe!! Yes, I'll continue this one seeing that the response has been fairly unanimous, so no worries there. Thanks again for such a lovely comment!
WOW BROTHER, I NEVER EVEN LOOK UP TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS A KATH LESSON CAUSE I JUST DIDN'T THINK ANYONE COULD TRULY PULL IT OFF YOU NAILED IT BRO !!!
Thanks a ton James!!
The Terry Kath suggestion was made only days ago. How did you learn this so quickly? Amazing and .... Slightly depressing ( to me ). Very impressive. Thank you so much for tackling this song. I was lucky enough to see Chicago/Kath. Make Me Smile - another great solo.
This 25 or 6 to 4 breakdown is the first time I've heard anyone discuss it in such detail. As always, you teach a song, but with such a unique approach you teach things that can be applied elsewhere. I am a paid member, but will send in a small donation because it is well-deserved.
Wow! Thanks so much Phil! I'm not sure how I learned it quickly but (to the extent that I got it) the notes seemed to fall right under the fingers so to speak. I'm so glad you enjoyed the lesson. There's so much there in it. I kept the theory to a minimum here, but there's some really neat notes Terry is deliberately playing for. He must've had just an incredible ear because with all that speed he still somehow played some really catchy notes.
And thanks for the donation as well as the lovely comment. It means a lot!
Wow! I have been trying to figure out this solo for years and there were parts I couldn’t grasp until now. This is the best explanation of what Terry was doing yet. Thanks for the excellent lesson.
So glad it helped!! Thanks so much for the compliment!
I would like more of this song Mark and don't forget the wah-wah pedal guitar solo stuff. that's my favorite part the guitar solo
Sounds good Matt!
Terry Kath was extremely underrated. It’s criminal how much he is left out of the greatest guitarist ever conversation.
Break out the Wah-Wah pedal, here he comes.
Fantastic, Mark.
Thanks! It's coming!
If i could press like 1000 times and have them count, I would now!😁 terry is my favorite, you know that. I've been adding unnecessary notes to the fast part that trip me up. You definitely helped me a lot by showing me that it is simpler, and you smoked that section, youre a beast! I hope there is a part 2 coming! Enjoy the day Mark
Thanks so much David!! Yes, I know you love Terry's playing. Absolutely I will do more.
This is an excellent lesson for 25 or 6 to 4. The best I’ve seen! Tremendous work, Mark. Thank You!
Wow, thanks!
thank you for explaining wair the lead parts come from iv strugled with the guitar all my life never had the time to sit down and dig in now at 67 im making time but still slow going you are a excelent teacher thank you so much Mark
My pleasure. Glad it was helpful!
Mark thank you for teaching the solo to Since You Been Gone, probably one of my favorite tunes for so long. the riff is the first I learned but was way too lazy to learn the solo, but thanks to you, I learned it!! Thanks again.
My pleasure! Thanks for listening!
Hey Mark. I’ve been away from guitar for a while. Trying to get back into it. Anyway, just wanted to say I love your videos the same as I did 4-5 years ago. Still following you. You’re an awesome teacher. Learned a ton from you over time and appreciate you very much.
Welcome back! And thanks a ton. I appreciate it!
Thank You, Thank You! I've only been able to get through about 25% of this Solo on my own. You're bringing me through the rest of the way. This Solo is my Top 10 of Greatest Solos, if not the #1. Great job Mark, really appreciate the lesson.
Glad to help!
There’s something here for everyone, I’m a older beginner so maybe learning a line without expecting to learn all of this lesson is better to keep me motivated.
I’m still learning Aqualung and Don’t Fear The Reaper both were way over my head and skill level but soon getting through parts became easier and easier. Those two lessons are part of my regular practice.
Now line 4 here is too fast for me and as Mark says: “you can’t think”
So I’ll enjoy and learn what I can and who knows where it will go.
Part of learning for me is do I love a song enough and know the song well enough to commit?
Great lesson as usual, this channel has really helped me during my start of learning guitar 2-1/2 years ago until now.
Thanks again!!
Thanks Kerry! Glad to hear the channel has helped.
Yes, the first and second lines are excellent and not too difficult. And even the 4th is quite useful and not too hard if you slow it down! But yes, at speed it's a bear!
Me to
@@flouisbailey thanks!
Mark, you always blow my mind when you open it up. Terry Kath will always be one of my favorite players. You tear it up!
Would love to see the other solos and lessons on I’m A Man!!
Thanks so much Frank! I'll put a bunch more Terry Kath on the list ... including I'm A Man.
I was just telling my wife yesterday about Terry cath and how under appreciated he is ...man was a monster on guitar ..self taught as well
No doubt about that!
Always posting great material Mark! Thanks for your hard work in this 👍much appreciated Mate.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
The epitome of vertical neck playing melodically at high speed, a rare combination....super done.
Thanks so much Dave. Glad you enjoyed. Terry was one helluva player!
Nobody made the brass work in RnR like Chicago and this is one of the greatest songs of all time! Good choice! One of my favorite songs! Rock on! 🤟 (Always mention an obvious theory thing... like a straight up or down pentatonic run or whatever. Thank you!)
Yeah!
Mark, another great "You Lost Me" guitar lesson, I never learned the pentatonic, scales, never had a lesson either. Reminds me of a story, Oh I have plenty of those, Thanks!
Great work! I watched quite a few guitar lessons on this solo. You are the first one to really cover the theory. More please! I was trying to figure out how he incorporates the harmonic minor and dorian. You nailed it. Please do a deeper dive into the theory. This should be in a textbook on how to solo over non-diatonic chords!
Thanks brother!
I like the way you broke it down in short sections.I may be able to learn it this way. of course I've been wanting to learn this since the 70s. I hope you post the rest of it and thanks also. I have the tabs for this but it dont really help as much as the way your teach is much better.. Oh yeah your guitar skills are amazing, you was burning it up man. Very Awesome, Thanks again
Hey, thanks a bunch. Yeah, it's on the to-do list. I know what you mean about the tab. I have to listen to the solo over and over until I can hum it, then write it down myself.
Great lesson. I could never play it. But very fun to watch.
Thanks! But you know, those melodic lines are really great to learn. And the fast ones? Well, they *are* fast for sure, but even if you don't get them up to speed they're still useful. In any event, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
part 2 would be great Mark
Great, thanks!
Anything Terry Kath would be perfect . His throne was stolen yet a king of players none the less .
Sounds good!
Great lesson. More please. Let's finish the solo. Maybe some of the fills as well?
Thanks John! I'm going to finish the solo. Not sure about the fills as they're so similar to the lines used in the solo anyway. Maybe I'd put a couple into a "Terry Kath licks" video or something. Thanks for the suggestion!
Mark, I learn most stuff by ear, but this was one I really enjoy listening to, but it's so fast I just didn't think I'd get it. I don't have a recording that I can play over& over untill I can memorize it, and there was just too much there (I thought).
But now, after this, I feel like it's attainable. Thanks fo all you do!
Love to watch you jam!
Thanks Jeff. Great to hear! I'm glad this was helpful for you!
I hope others have stated this, but yes, please do the rest of the solo. It's been years since I've played the tune with my prior band. I know I did not have everything exact but...
Sure would like to see what I missed. Always learning. Thank you.
Yes, a number of others have requested it. Thanks for watching!
Man please post the rest of this song, Thanks in advance
Sounds like a good plan. Thanks!
That was incredible!! Alot of fun to follow along with! Definitely underappreciated!! Thumbs up on hearing more from Terri... Thanks for taking the time Mark! Love Kris IL 💯🍻💥
Thanks Kris!! Glad you enjoyed.
@@MarkZabel appreciate " If you dont need the tabs that's ok..." no pressure....thank you
Great song choice and video. Thank you, Mark.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a beautiful guitar
I think so too!
Fantastic, please do 2nd part of 25,/ 6 to 4.
10 years after .....was also great, nice
going thanks.
Thanks! I'll consider the 2nd part for sure!
Great instruction - thanks Mark!
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent Lesson 👍👍 Please do the next section ASAP 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks! I'll get to it my man!
Very nice, and that Tele is beautiful.
Thanks! And yes, I've come to really like this guitar. It's a bit painful, being a guitar with vintage-style features (Kluson tuners ... nice, but not to my taste, truss rod adjustment buried at bottom of the neck). But, the pickups sound really nice, have some cool modern wiring and the neck is very, very good for me. 9.5" radius (I like 12" or 14") but otherwise ... soft V shape, kind of chunky but not too much. Feels great. Plus, yeah, I like the looks of it too!
I traded a guitar for it too, so I feel pretty good I didn't simply add more wood to the collection. I feel bad when I have a nice guitar that I don't play!
Awesome guitar player and great lesson thanks
Thanks so much!
Great video, would love another lesson
Thanks! More coming!
Yes,of course I want the next part.Great choice, don't know if I have seen anyone take on this awesome lead. Thanks Mark!!
Thanks again!
Mark, super lead work. You captured the tone nicely. I also like the “powder blue” Fender Telecaster.
Thanks so much Frank!!
@@MarkZabel Hey Mark, I heard a old song the other day that no one ever talks about called “The Guitar Man” by Bread and it features some interesting lead guitar using a wah-wah. Would it be something you would consider for a future lesson?
Mark digging the new look !! very guitar player!:)
Thanks Dan!
Thanks Mark, great job again! Check out Terry's solo 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood 1970, he was in his element that night. Phenomenal solo, giving me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
Thanks! Yes, I've seen that one. Great performance. Thanks for reminding me.
Great lesson Mark. Please do the 2nd part. Maybe by then I will have this closer to speed.
Thanks Jeff! Sounds like a plan!
HOLY MOLLY YOU ACTUALLY DID IT!!
Only took a couple years but well worth it. Sending $.
Well, that's the first chorus anyway. But it's a great one - total classic. I've mostly been hesitant because the solo is so long and the lesson would be over an hour. But then I figured why not break it up.
Honestly, I get so many requests that it was just one of those things that fell off the radar. A member mentioned it in a livestream I did last week, so I thought "What the heck!"
And yes, sorry about the "couple of years". It's probably even a bit more than that.
This is great. Would love to see more on the theory
Thanks and you got it!
Nice!!
Thanks!
Hi Mark, great lesson on 25 or 6 to 4. please do a lesson on the second part of the solo. you are great! andy
Ok thanks!
Wicked i like it too much, yes, more theory please! Not worthy!
You got it! Well do the theory.
Is the best "👍☝👍
Hi Mark any chance you could show how to play the old Joe Walsh song "COUNTY FAIR ". I've always loved that song and I can figure out the main riff but the chords during the verse I'm not really sure about. Thanks for your expertise. I just started playing again and have had many physical pain problems after 8 back surgeries over time which have robbed me of my patience at times. Thanks for your assistance. Rob Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah
I never heard of it before and just listened to it. Nice song!
I think the verse starts out as: Am7, Bm7, Am7, Em7, Am7, Bm7, Cmaj7, Bm7, Am7.
After that it modulates to the key of D major and Joe plays G/A and A
Hope that helps. I'll put it on the list of songs to consider!
This is so awesome love this song awesome solo terry kath was great, could you do some lessons on jeff healey great vid btw mark.👌
Thanks Paul. Anything in particular from Jeff Healey you'd like?
@@MarkZabel Hi mark yes i really like the song i need to be loved from the see the light album i love all hes songs im a huge healey fan but that one i would really like to learn.
Oh my God.... You started speaking so softly and kinda Me. Rogers neighborhood and then when you started playing I was mesmerized!!! Dang you are awesome with the guitar. How long have you been playing to be that Great?
Aw shucks, thanks! I've been playing off and on since I was 8. So ... um ... 29 years ... LOL! Okay, maybe a few more. :)
@@MarkZabel Sadly, I'm 49 years old and have only been playing for about 5 years and I still suck!!!!
Here the man of code
Mark, Great lesson! Terry Kath was an excellent guitar player. I watched a NETFLIX program about him and the band CHICAGO and it was great! What model of BLACKSTAR amp do you use? I really like the tone you get from it.
Thanks Mick! (And thanks for the info ... I think I've seen that documentary on Netflix - a good one.)
I'm using a BlackStar HT-5 mkii. I like it quite a bit. It's a simple 2-channel amp. I *really* like the attenuation down to 0.5 Watts! Thanks for watching!
Kath put a humbucker in the neck position so he could get Gibson and fender sounds from one guitar
Yes he did. Although I think that he probably used a Les Paul on the studio recording. He also often used a Strat in the early days. This Fender Vintera Telecaster has 4-way wiring so you get a humbucker-like tone when you use the neck and bridge in series.
Man, that's alot to remember. 😆
Hey Jeff. You can do it! BTW, there's more on the Member site, including theory, which should eliminate a lot of the memorization issues. The fast pentatonic run is really just a trip down and back up the normal "Clapton" extension. And it ends on a root (A) on the 2nd string every time. Knowing where you're going to end up makes it a lot easier.
@@MarkZabel I have it up to the double E on the 12th fret
Did you ever make the other parts of the lesson? Also I’ve always been searching for a tutorial on Free for All by Ted Nugent, so many great dynamics that would be fun to learn. Thanks for the help!
Hi. I never did. Tutorial videos don't perform well, so mostly stopped making them for CZcams and just make them for members of my site. Free for All ... yeah, lots of cool licks on that one.
part 2 please
Thanks.
can you please do a deeper theory lesson on this
Absolutely!
What is that final dissident chord at the very end of the song?
How can I get the other parts
Playing a song naked is playing the dry channel of a fender reverb with no backing track. That's what I practice on. Once I nail that, normal operating conditions are a breeze
I think it's almost identical to the Ziggy Stardust riff
Mark did you do the second part?
Hi Robert. I haven't done part 2 yet.
@@MarkZabel thank you so much Mark. Just loved part 1.
Yes, please give us part 2.
By the way, the tab link doesn’t work.
Okay. I just clicked the link and it went right to the signup to get tabs. Seems to work fine. Might want to try again.
The intro is actually octaves
Terry Kath not under appreciated by me. One of my all time solos. Thank you.
Rock on!
Funny….I just came to your site to ask for some Chicago songs. Does Anybody Really Know….Saturday in the Park….thx
Merry Christmas.
Ha! That's great. Nice suggestion. Merry Christmas to you too!

Yes and yes Terry Kath was one of the most underrated guitarist ever! Plus a great vocalist!
@@johnsimmons6136 absolutely! On both counts!
Absolutely!
I'm going now to walk out into traffic. Right before this I just watched a 5 year old Korean kid playing Steve Vai.
Easy now Theo! Just playing is what matters. Enjoying it and sharing with others.
Line 2: Sounds to me that your down slides are too long. I believe the slides are 1/2 steps and are located above the 8th fret. They end on the 11th fret/G# on the A string. To check I isolated the individual slides on an audio program and played them several times. Not only are the slides sharper with half steps, they are also easier. Otherwise I agree with you that they are cool and nicely melodic (pleasing to me), which is what I principally care about rather than theory, technicality, speed, or finger gymnastics.
okay
Why is Vintera the wrong guitar for this?
Good question! Extra thick neck, marrow, with a 9.5" radius. Most people would say a slow neck. Works perfectly fine though. I think most of the "fast" doesn't have so much to do with the guitar. 😂
It's actually a great guitar!!
PS if you down voted you were likely depressed at learning great music and you gave up.
Thanks! You tell 'em Louis!! :)
I didn’t know that Dave Pensado could shred??
LOL! Wow, inside baseball on that for sure!
@@MarkZabel All jokes aside, beautiful video my friend
@@TehNixonExe Thank you!!
Tele? Really...I always assumed it was a Les Paul. Go figure...
On the recording ... probably a Les Paul. His usual ... a Tele.
This is so ridicolously out of my league. Ive got the first two lines down, ive decided that i will play the rest of it extremely slow for at least 30 minutes every day and see what happens. I hope eventually ill br able to play it a bit faster
That's a good idea - learn to play it slowly. Take note especially of the notes that begin and end each phrase. The notes in-between are not usually important. That will help you play your own solos to this chord progression.
@@MarkZabel thank you very much!
Mark, this was FANTASTIC!!!! This was a wonderful lesson/demonstration on one of the best guitar solos of all time! I hope you do future episodes of the rest of the solo! Keep it up!
So glad you enjoyed it Dave! I remember it has always been one of your favorite solos!
I was just telling my wife yesterday about Terry cath and how under appreciated he is ...man was a monster on guitar ..self taught as well
Definitely a great player. Most importantly ... he knew most songs don't need (and shouldn't have) outrageous solos and in-your-face guitar. Music first.
There are 2 solos in this song on guitar...then they kinda hang on underneath the rhythm to my ears..I'd like to hear them isolated....runs gammet from crazy wah to hand created tremolos to articulate cleans..master of the tone
