This is such an amazing video. I graduated from UCLA in 2013 and have come to realize that I primarily chose going there for its prestige. I had a great experience, but when I was applying to schools, I applied to mainly name-brand schools that everyone knows. I thought that by going to a recognizable school, I'd instantly be successful upon graduation. Turns out, my path completely changed from what I thought I wanted to do in college to what I'm doing now. No one really cares what school I went to. They just care if I can get the job done. Thank you so much for making this!

This is an excellent message for middle-class families that tend to receive a disproportionately low amount of aid. However, low-income families shouldn't listen to this, since the Ivies give an enormous amount of aid to such people. I received a full ride to Yale because of my financial need, so people in families that make less than $65k a year shouldn't take this video as a sign that they should give up before applying.

I absolutely love the message of this video. I have always put so much pressure on myself to attend a "top tier" school. I was rejected from almost all of the prestigious schools I applied to (Dartmouth hurt the worst, I applied there early decision). I was waitlisted at a few schools that were ranked amongst the ones I was rejected to (Boston College, Washington University in St. Louis) but never accepted the waitlist spots because I was so crushed by all of my rejections. In the end, with financial aid considered, I was between Miami University (in Ohio) and Lehigh. Lehigh is ranked much higher, but I ended up choosing Miami. I am so excited to attend Miami University the fall because it is the perfect place for me! I will be in their honors college and have already been invited to do research with a select group of freshmen. I feel that many of my peers (myself included) spent too much time during their college search focusing on the prestige of prospective schools, instead of finding the institution that was the right fit for them!! At the end of the day, It is your character and drive that will get you places, not the name of the university that you attended.

Most Ivy League schools will pay for your tuition if financial problems are a concern. This actually one of the larger benefits of going to an Ivy League.
More importantly though, undergraduate school helps you get connected with very influential people, and if you want a respectable job or simply want to go further into graduate school, these connections are many times more important than what you actually did while in school.

I was accepted to an Ivy League school, however, I will be attending my the Honors College at my local state school. The Ivy was 200k, but the state school was full ride including dorming. WOW! Thank you very much for posting this video! I'm a senior in high school and was recently denied admissions to both my top and second pick schools (USC & RIT). I was completely shocked when I got rejected from RIT since I matched the school's academic recommendations and firmly believed that I would get in. It felt like all of my plans to become a computer/software engineer had just fallen through the floor. I too was worried about not having hard working or smart people in my classes.
Since I felt really down, I went on the Internet and started reading forums and articles about engineers and their experience in their field. What I discovered was that it was not the schools ranking or prestige that made those people successful but rather their passion, enthusiasm and drive to grow and learn. Heck some of them only went to community college and still managed to work alongside people from a "top" 4-year school. Although I haven't made a final decision yet, I'm leaning towards going to Temple University where I'm offered a decent financial aid and scholarship as an in-state.

This video mentions everything that I stand for. An Ivy league will certainly help you get the career you want, but if you want to be the best and most successful at your "dream" job, you have to get there yourself. And an Ivy league school certainly will not take you there all by itself

Choose a school based on the academic environment first. My choice was between UC Berkeley and University of Chicago. I chose Chicago because the student faculty ratio was smaller, it got glowing reviews from students who went there, and I knew that it was a great learning environment. And it was. I also got taught by actual professors. On the flip side, the weather was terrible.

You don't need an Ivy stamp, but it won't hurt. I take your point that you should not go if it is to serve your self esteem, but I think it is naive to say that "hard work" alone will get you what you want. The cost of top American universities is simply catastrophic for middle class families: you don't qualify for much aid, if any, so 1/4 million is a high price. Finally, beyond the options lower-tier scholarships, there are also European universities to consider, some of them among the best in the world. It is a pity more Americans don't consider them.

This made me feel much better! I had gotten into UT Austin and UC San Diego/Irvine, but chose to go to the University of Texas at Dallas because they had offered me a scholarship that would make my cost for 4 years around $25k. Seeing so many people around me going to top tier and upper level universities made me feel like I was missing out, but it's always inspiring to see people create their own success through hard work at a lesser known school than have opportunities handed and thrown to them at an Ivy.

In my high school it is very competitive and many, many, MANY kids are always constantly talking about the Ivy League school of their dreams and all the debt they're willing to go into just to go to these schools, because if they don't go they'll be failures in life. Rarely do we ever get insight and perspective from the outside world and I'm thankful you were able to provide that for me today. I was just having a bit of doubt with my college choice yesterday (SJSU) as I saw many of my friends commit to more top-tier colleges such as Cal & other UC's! I messed up pretty bad in my junior year and my sudden grade drop during the most critical year in HS made it pretty much impossible to get accepted into my ideal UC's. Even though I will be going to my safety school, the school still has a solid program for what I'm planning to study (Industrial Design) and hopefully with the school's proximity to the center of tech, I'll be able to thoroughly explore the integration of design in tech!

So, heads-up, you'll probably change your mind about what you want as a profession and you'll need more education.... a few years after UCLA I changed my mind AGAIN, went to two private colleges and now I work in the South Pacific as a CT Technologist in a new hospital here. Ivy League universities' reputation is far better than they really are. Especially when it comes to teaching. (And this is the only thing that matters to you as a student, research is for PhDs and Profs.)
Therefore: Got to europe. Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway. The average university there is much better than all Ivy League universities. Go to a good university (e.g in Germany any of the 9 TU's that are in the excellence initiative) and have far better education than any Ivy League College can offer.
And most importantly. Dont pay 200k to study. Rather: GET PAID around 500 Euros (= 570 USD) per month to study.
It's as simple as that. Dont study in a country that wants the people to stay uneducated by charging insane amounts of money.
Study where people want you to study, want you to have the best education possible. Get supported while studying.

I'll second that. Although I'm not sure how Dutch universities compare to the Ivies in terms of education, most are ranked highly. More importantly, tuition in the Netherlands is much cheaper than in the US, even for non-EEA students. However, you are not paid in the Netherlands to go to university. You can take out a loan with a zero percent interest rate. It's a pretty good deal :)

For the longest time I thought Duke was my only option since it has the biggest name behind it. As I looked at the financial burden it would put on my family I began to look hard at what Duke could provide and whether it justified a 50k+ price delta. As someone who recently rejected Harvard for this exact reason (scholarship vs. no financial aid) it was incredibly reassuring to watch this.
Harvard has a lot of prestige attached to it (as does any top-ranked school), and most people automatically assume you'll be going to it or at least a school of similar stature, so it was incredibly stressful deciding between the 2 (even if I knew ultimately that I wouldn't be going to Harvard). Which is ridiculous; the school I'm going to isn't a bad school (if you're getting an education, any school regardless of ranking is a good one) and I'm incredibly privileged to call it my home for the next 4 years.

I decided to go to a local state college, Cal Poly Pomona, since its close by, still good for my engineering major, and much much MUCH less financially demanding. Anyways, I respect your decision, as well as mine, since MIT is pretty much only one label to put on resumes. Instead its best to put experiences, like internships and qualified skills, which go much further than just one line, on a resume for a job. Awesome video, and I really respect your views on college.

This is very strange to me. I am going to an Ivy League college, though for not because of their reputation.
I live in Central New York I have decided to go to Cornell University instead of a SUNY because the state schools that accepted me were located farther away and gave me less financial aid. With financial aid, Cornell's tuition was comparable to that of a state school, and Cornell's lodging was far cheaper (can you believe housing at a state school is almost double the tuition cost?!).

I went through a very similar experience! I was accepted to CMU's school of computer science when I was in high school, and it was my dream school all through high school. But I ended up going to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on a full ride. I was so worried that I'd be missing out on so many opportunities by not choosing CMU. But I made opportunities for myself throughout Rose and now I'm about to start out my software engineering career at Airbnb (I am also graduating in 3 years!)
Totally goes to show that the name of your school doesn't dictate your destiny, and if you're truly interested in what you're studying that you'll end up making opportunities for yourself no matter what college you go to!

That was the same case for me when choosing Lawrence Tech Univ vs UofM College of Architecture and College of Engineering. All the College Rankings for Architecture and College Prep guide stats pointed towards UofM as a highly ranked school. However I got a lot of scholarships for Lawrence Tech and turned out to be a very hands on school and linked directly to working professionals. I was offered very little if any by UofM, and found out later by a UofM Architecture Grad that college professors were very hands off and you were left to your own devices to meet their curriculum expectations. While LTU groomed you a little and then pushed you in a direction to see how you would thrive. I was surrounded by many creative people and did very little if any book work, but spent many many hours on my coursework because of my personal investment in the projects. In the end I was glad of my years at LTU and the creative endeavors it fostered, as opposed to the non practical curriculum and the hands off professors in UofM, that would have left me an impotent professional with renowned degree.

This is such a great video. I agree 100% with everything you said. I got rejected by almost all universities I applied for. And through all of that I realized that my self-worth could never come from name on my resumé. I realized that if my self-worth would come from outside, if I needed the validation of others in order to feel special and worthy, I would never be happy. I wouldn’t have believed this a few months ago, considering all the tears I shed following my rejections, but all these struggles have led me to grow personally. So thank you universities for rejecting me. You actually helped me with becoming a better person.

Because my guidance counselor keeps trying to keep me in classes I struggle in because she says "well Ivy League colleges are looking for...(blah blah blah whatever class)" And if I'm struggling in a class it doesn't make sense for her to keep me in a class I'm barely passing....You gave me more positivity in thinking on why I don't have to go to some big name school. I feel relieved and less stress that I'm not the only one that doesn't stress about Ivy League Schools and more on comfort and financial needs? I guess lol. You really helped me become more happier with my decisions to go to like a community or state college instead of Ivy League but i was never thinking of going to one. If financial reasons are not a factor in your decision and you are trying to decide because of location or something else, I would highly recommend going to an elite university. I've seen friends who went to great schools like UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara have unbelievable trouble finding internships because of the name of their school. Top companies simply don't recruit as heavily from lower ranked colleges and it will be more difficult to be considered. A top university will enhance your abilities and give you the unlimited resources you need to do whatever you want. Yes, not every CS major at Stanford will end up getting into Google or whatever dream job they have, but a very large number of them will be interviewed and have the opportunity to work there. Ultimately it's up to you and your skills where you end up, but your school will help you tremendously. As someone who knew the financial burden it would put on my parents to go to Stanford rather than a cheaper but good school like UCB, I'd still do it. You can't buy the ridiculously accomplished friends and people you meet or the incredible professors you interact with after graduating. If you're capable, you can get to a lot of places, but there's a lot more to your education than the first job you land out of college.

I go to an Ivy League university (so I guess it's sort of ironic that I do agree with you? lol) but I still think the whole 'brand' of the Ivy Leagues is too hyped up. success is not based on the name of the university you went to but you, yourself!

I definitely agree with the video but I just want to say that you still went to a pretty prestigious research university. I am from Los Angeles and I have definitely heard of Michigan State since I was a kid. This advice may be a stretch if the person gets a full ride from an unknown school (ex. random less selective liberal arts college) on a national level. I have a LinkedIn account and I can honestly say that schools with some kind of big name do help. But it's definitely a case-by-case basis like you said...I didn't even look at my admissions results besides two colleges! I am on a full ride at SJSU and I don't regret it at all

I would only go to an IVY league if they paid for everything or extremely reduced tuition. Or if I were part of a dynastic family as it's the only point it's any good: Ivy League is just a place for brat millionaire and billionaire families send their kids, and take on genius people as token to use as an excuse to later say why even their even more student body population of poor performing billionaire and millionaire students got top jobs.
Basically, if you're not super rich and well connected already or a prodigy in a particular field and you're getting a full ride scholarship, you shouldn't bother, it would likely be a waste. Unless you feel like trying to sycophant your way to connections which isn't always possible if they find out your not rich nor are you some interesting genius pet; that you're a middle class boring person instead with sucker written on your forehead.

Thank you. I think this is such an important video. I'm a senior in high school and I'm apart of the 'nerd' group so I'm surrounded by a bunch of people who are going to really great schools. CalTech, Cornell, Wellesley, ect. Despite the fact that I've taken multiple APs, a lot more than a lot of my friends and because of that, am going to be a sophomore when I enter college, I still never felt good enough. I'm going to a Community College first to save money and for someone who feels the need to be validated by the name of a school, I've felt really horrible about that. But the fact is that it's the smartest option and I think I need to realize that the name of the school you go to is not that important. Johns Hopkins has always been my dream school but I'm starting to realize that if I don't get in that that's okay and if I do, that doesn't mean I have to go. Thanks for this!

The classes are a joke, the students are burnouts, I feel no sense of satisfaction or joy, even if I am saving money. There are no study-abroad programs, no connections with intellectuals or elites that you would get at a real school. Honestly, I will regret not going to my dream school after working so hard through high school. At least you don't need to go to a real school to learn to tie a noose.

+James Russell I'm sorry your experience with community college hasn't been stellar. :/ That's one of the things I'm worried about is that the education will be sub-par. I'm going to Onondaga Community College though, which is a SUNY school and is apart of that system and is recognized as a good set of schools. There are honors classes there, there is a honors club and I think there might even be a study abroad program. I know people a girl who went there and transferred to Cornell (Cornell has a transfer agreement with OCC so all her credits transfered) and I know another person who is going to SUNY Upstate now after two years at OCC. So I guess it all depends on the community college. I'm honestly really sorry to hear you're at a bad one. I hope you can transfer somewhere else because you deserve a good education, especially someone smart enough to get into BU

+Teen Idle I was accepted into Wellelsey College but there can be some drawbacks. My parents expect me to major in a STEM field since they're paying for my tuition- maybe when I enter Wellesley, I'll end up loving it. But judging on my effort now, I've also struggled in the sciences and there's no drive in me to pursue it. To be honest, I want to pursue international relations and economics, but my parents find those majors to be "useless" (even though most STEM majors actually don't go into STEM....) But honestly, I firmly believe that if you work really hard for something, you can get a job you desire, despite where you go. There's probably connections in your city and there will probably be serious students in your class who want to succeed as well but can't afford the sky-high tuitions of these liberal arts/Ivy colleges.

I think it is slightly misleading about the financial aid that she talked about in this video. Ivies and other elite universities actually generally give lots of financial aid to their students. Often times they will meet all "demonstrated need" which is still going to be a burden to the family, but most will not pay anything close to full or even half tuition. They are able to do this when most colleges can't because of the ridiculously large endowments that they have. Some schools have billions of dollars, a lot of which is used for financial aid.
