I really enjoy watching your videos, but have a talk with your cameraman. He seems to be focused primarily on keeping you centered and not giving us a good look at the machinery. We end up being thoroughly familiar with your coveralls but left wondering what the machinery looks like.
You've gotten some SMOKIN deals! I've made out at auctions where other bidders were sleeping or yakking. I've also made out after the auction on items that didn't get a bid.
Last shop I worked at had that same polish lathe! We had to change the motor due to a shop flood and it was a big job getting all the water out of the gearbox and getting the electric motor off.
You are lucky to be in the woods .The boro town i live in fined me for my building issues 21300.00 Then they sold me at the sheriff sale. The vice president of boro council bought it. I scraped lot of machines and tools

i was at an auction of some equipment . they had some sullair screw compressors 7.5 hp and one bigger one. guys were really interested in the small ones . the big one came up and i bid 500 as an opener. no one else bid . they went silent when i said 500 so i didn't need to fight over it. turned out to be a 30 hp screw compressor with only 2500 hrs on it . i still have it as one of my backup units now 20 yrs later but it was my main unit for years till i needed more cfm .
The offshore lathes can have some issues, we have a willis microcut at work and for some reason it lacks a crossslide lock but they did put locks on compound and carriage
I ran a Nebel sliding gap bed, I did not like it, it was not rigid & it did not stay straight, as the bed moved out. Most of the time Lathes have been chosen by what was available more than, looking for a certain machine.
Machining in Alaska makes me wonder something. I'm curious if it's an issue. Do you ever have to be concerned about thermal expansion? I wasn't sure if any of the work you did would have had tight enough tolerances to where hermal expansion might pose an issue. P I'm really interested if there's any change in the process due to acclamation from the elements being that you work in Alaska.
Most things heat/cool together & the fit is the same, but some materials don't like the cold. Cold is also good to help a shrink fit, if it's the right day. I also have seen problems blamed on the cold, because it was easy to do & kept the blame away from the bad procedure. I observed welds allowed to cool at -50 outside, then the later failure blamed on the weld alloy, the new alloy came with strict welding guidelines on pre/post heat, the pre/post heat solving the problem.
Yeah I see people working most of them are just wandering around the background I'm thinking one of these videos takes a couple hours because they edit things it's raw footage raw footage in no editing that's how I like to see things the way the way it is
How is the I was thinking he was meant how do you make money making these videos here where people make money making the videos but I don't know how it really functions
when you talk about cost of machine vs the work you are comparing apples and oranges. if a machine gives you a $100k of work it only earns you the profit on those jobs so likely 35 - 50% of the gross at best. so whether it makes money should be did it make you more profit than it's cost.
I enjoy watching all your videos and enjoy how you work
Love hearing Howie tell the stories behind his iron and a lifetime of profitably using them. Cant wait till parts 2 and 3.
Videos like this makes me truly appreciate the internet, the person who uploaded this, and of course Mr. Howees himself. Amazingly interesting stuff.

Great auction story on the saw!
thank you for telling the prices! very interesting and transparent!
Priceless!
Dudes got an awesome set up. Love the stories behind everything
Howee. You are awesome man. Keep doing what you do!
In a shop a machine has to justify its space. The outside machines didn’t justify their space inside the shop.
Cant believe somebody went to the trouble of moving our Polish lathe Poreba overseas :D but nice to see it in other color then usual green :D
Keep them coming Howee.
Awesome shop!!!
Very interesting shop and tour.
Beautiful shop tour thanks from old New Orleans 😎
A comment just for the Algor.
I was fun to watch.

WTH??
We have a bad borough here too, but they don't enforce all of their BS.
😢 That donkery is quite common these days!!
This ain't America .
I have been seeing a lot of stuff, lately especially, that isn't American going on .

Happy New Years.....cheers from Florida.....Paul
Thanks, fun video.
Very interesting video, thanks.
The saw doesn’t necessarily make you money, but it’s hard to make money without one.

Excellent video has always. Happy New Year!
What kind of power does the shop use, do you have generator or back up source?
Thats how i like to buy YES YES YES
Hey boss can you please do a series on 'how to do X'. Specifically Id love to see your methods of cutting a custom gear!
That will happen when the job does next, might be a week, might be 5 years.
you need to put the cover back on the electrical panel behind your keyseater . does osha not exist in your town?
I saw that too I didn't want to say anything
Out of curiosity with your shop what is roughly total amount of "business" going through?
How you doing John Ritter? Finally remembered your name?
Have you ever considered a LeBlond slide bed lathe?
I ran a Nebel sliding gap bed, I did not like it, it was not rigid & it did not stay straight, as the bed moved out. Most of the time Lathes have been chosen by what was available more than, looking for a certain machine.

How warm does it get summer
Normally 90, but I have seen high 90s

Lucky Goldstar?
When do you work ?
You see one 15 min video per week and people are working during that vid, are you blind?
Yeah I see people working most of them are just wandering around the background I'm thinking one of these videos takes a couple hours because they edit things it's raw footage raw footage in no editing that's how I like to see things the way the way it is
Howee much is true? Who knows.
Dear cameraman, please show the machines next time, I dont need to see Howies head so much.
How do you make money here?
Most of the work is for Gold Mines.
How is the I was thinking he was meant how do you make money making these videos here where people make money making the videos but I don't know how it really functions
Biuild a bigger shop or leanto
I can't get a job being to old
I never made money
You have to much outside

You are correct, this is not a profit/loss analysis. I think this more correctly is an indicator of total volumes vs machines that don't get used.
Love the story of the saw at the auction; good for you.

Got to pay attention at auctions.
@@dutchgray86 Please don't LOL
@funone8716 not that it matters because I haven't been to a machinery auction in years, they are all on line now and not a lot ever goes cheap.
I remember that auction
