Doug Kelsey talks about Dr. Oz's specific suggestions in a recent publication of Men's Fitness for men over 50 to live long and prosper...and what got left out.
Resistance training: 20-30 minute workouts, 3 x weekly or less: 1 set each / 4 -10 exercises / slow reps, to failure between 1-3 minutes / breaks as short as possible: Builds strength, muscle, flexibility, bone mass, good glucose tolerance, resistance to injury, *&* cardio-vascular fitness. Properly done, HIT trainees are breathing as if running for most of the session. Added "endurance" training is unnecessary, unless competitive biking, running, etc, is your chosen recreation.
Totally agree, you lose muscle as you age and doing resistance exercises along with cardio is a must both for maintaining strength and flexibility. I work smarter now than i did in my 20's in the gym and i feel so much stronger than when i stopped working out in my 30's. I am 53 this year. There is no good reason to stop.
Thanks for the comment. I'm familiar with Body by Science - read the book. How do you improve balance, agility, and/or speed with this approach? Totally agree it's a great muscle challenge though.
