Junk bike found on the street restored better than new

- After following up on a listing on local classified for a junk bike someone left on the side of the road for first come, first served, I found this Motiv in sad shape. (In my mind I read Marin, which is why I made the branding mistake). Mistakes aside, I completely restored and made this bike better than new.

I made some mistakes in this video (a regular occurrence). The keen-eyed observer will have noticed that I mistook this Motiv bike for a Marin, and gave it the wrong logo. I always used to get those two brands mixed up and it came back to haunt me in this video. :) I also put the back tire on backward. So much for attention to detail. 🤦 We'll get there folks! Daily improvements. Thanks for watching anyway!
Glad to see you recognized your mistake. The big mistake I saw you make was hitting your Park Tool crank puller with a Mallet, you really didn’t need to do that, your supposed to turn it clockwise, there will be a little resistance but it will turn and then the crank should come off. Second,if there’s corrosion in the crank arm bolt holes, on a square taper first take the bolt out, and then using a dremel wire brush and some simple green, spray the area first then take the wire brush and clean out the crap in there, then remove the crank arm with a crank puller like normal. Those are my suggestions. Otherwise nice job as always.
@@MarshWaha Oh I'm very aware of how a crank puller should work. I tend to go straight to use a hammer first, ask questions later (not saying that's correct). But in my defense, there was a lot of corrosion in there and it wasn't coming out with solvents I had.
@@BuildaBetterBike I get that, it’s just some feedback is all, you want to keep those tools functional, that’s why I made that suggestion.
@@MarshWaha makes sense
I usually resort to a mallet too. 😳
When a professional photographer decides to restore bikes :) so soothing to watch
This guy would probably powder coat his family if he had the opportunity 😂
Social services told me I couldn't. :(
Couldn't or shouldn't 😂
@@BuildaBetterBike SS. think on that.
@@BuildaBetterBikethis reply wins
This is like that scene from Toy Story where the old guy restores Woody.
Great work. Quick tip - put a nickel inside each grip to help prevent the bar from cutting through the grip.
Thanks for the tip!
Probably the best real bike restoration video I've seen. So many restorations are actually "builds". This guy rebuilding wheels, stripping and powder coating his own frame and parts, rebuilding hubs, etc? Yes. It would have been nice to reuse more of the original parts. Great example of what is possible, but not exactly for the regular home builder
I don’t blame him for not reusing the original parts but it does look like he kept a lot of the junk I would’ve thrown... like the calipers, fork (ugh those cheap springs), crank arms, the handlebars, he even seems to have redone the wheels spent a lot of love repainting the original trash rims and hubs.
@@janbonne I was thinking that, it doesn't look worth the effort to recon all the parts, best just to upgrade them.
"So many restorations are actually "builds"."
This one isn't a restoration either, it's a "resto-mod". I like that this guy powder coats instead of doing rattlecan paint jobs like most others on CZcams do, but he makes some weird choices, like spending so much time, money, and effort on cheap bikes, and using terrible colors. All those parts he powder coated in that ridiculous pink color would have looked way better left bare and polished. Plus his stenciling method of applying lettering/graphics results in edges that aren't clean. Instead of trying to get fancy with it, he should just apply the vinyl stickers and leave it at that, like bike factories normally do.
That is not a restoration imbecile.
your channel is gonna get huge dude the production quality is amazing and very entertaining.
"oh wow he has a sandblast booth..."
*Starts powdercoats
"Ok that's deep....."
A little trick with the oury grips. Toss a quarter at the end so the bar ends don’t rip through!
Toss a coin to your gripper! XD
Way too heavy bro 😂
@@nikitamorozov1897 dude a 2 quarter is just 50 grams
@@kyleganiron1241 every weight counts
Too expensive
I really really appreciate the care that you took to restore this and to sand down and powder-coat with a vision for what the finished product would look like. Thank you for doing this video, filming it, editing it, and posting it. I am inspired.
Not sure about the painted screws but the rest: Kudos. Brand upgrade, reverse tyre included. Never mind, it's great. Subscribed.
Random passerby checking out this recommended video. Nice work!
Hi! I enjoyed your restoration projects, I learned a lot. The videos are inspiring, there are people commenting about you making mistakes, I learn also from your mistakes and that is a good thing. I live in a poor country where repurposing and reusing is a part of our life here, hope to see more of your restoration projects.
Theses RE builds are amazing. Very calming and after a day…it’s a release needed from the day. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
Great way to give new life to an old bike! Everything you need and nothing you don't, love it!
You are a true craftsman - patience and an eye for doing things well ... lovely work
Edit: wtf and you started powder coating the damn thing... I went in thinking it's just some dude in his shed..
Ok the moment you started sand blasting the frame i was surprised, didn't think you'd go down to bare metal...amazing rebuild. Subbed
Such an amazing job and great editing! I LOVE the songs you used. A good break from all the generic eletro music other channels do. You just got a new subscriber
This channel is going places for sure, you can really feel how much effort was put into the production of this video.
Thanks Matt. I definitely poor my heart into these
Its a refreshing change to watch a build video with no commentary...I have duly subscribed
“Strawbana”, Was admittedly a head scratcher... but then came the “aha!” moment a minute or two later. You sir are doing some great things only 5 uploads in. Choice of background music top notch too. I’d venture to say 2021 is off to a great start. Kudos sir.
Haha. Thanks Harry. I appreciate the kind words. And thanks about the background music! Two of those tracks I wrote recently.
And a musician who writes his own music too. Can’t make this up people. 🤙🏻
Glad I found this channel. It's oddly satisfying seeing these old bikes resurrected. It's inspiring. So much so that I'm gonna rebuild my old Giant Stance. Take it down to the aluminum and polish it.
Awesome channel! Love the effort and quality you put into the restorations and videos.
Very relaxing watching you tear down the old build, great video, I enjoyed it.
This video was SO relaxing to watch. I kept dozing off to the lovely sounds of tools and bike parts.
I really love the finished product!
Thank you very much!
This fella loves what he does and it shows. Second to none.
A lovely restoration - Many thanks for producing and kindly sharing the wisdom 🙏
The black and pink actually looks sick. As a guy I wouldn’t be embarrassed at all to ride this lol, I actually think I’d get compliments
You deserve a big like 👍 for this hard and professional job, yet with passion 👏 💙
one of if not the most soothing and calming restoration videos ive ever seen big up!
I was just about to say this. First time I saw a video from this channel but the mood is just perfect.
Awesome job! This was intense! Don't worry about the mistakes, we all make them!
...and in next week's video, how to make your Roadmaster look like a Trek Session
Loving your work, it's so soothing and satisfying!
Best of luck with the channel, you deserve great success :D
If one only had the patience, equipment, and talent.... wow! Great video.
hey thats my bike i was wondering what happened to it . just went in to grab a coke
That’s so cool how you can just fix up an old bike and make it look brand new
The restoration industry will grow
Really good showmanship. The Video kept my attention. Good craftsmanship. Beats alot of the car/or any repair/restore. Hands down good job.
Greetings from Germany and congratulations for this perfect restauration. Nice colours and components and the flow in your work is very inspiring. Take care and keep on going 👍
New life for old bike, good job bravo complimenti ciao da Milano Italy 💛👋🏻👋🏻
Seeing you make mistakes is the reason I subscribed. Looking forward to the next!
New to your channel. Thank you for putting together such great content. I can’t tell you how therapeutic this is for me.
It was all going so well, but then the crank, and the fork(!!), and that nice rapid-rise derailleur! It turned out a nice-looking bike, despite the wrong brand (hint: Motiv has a v, Marin has an r). And as a sucker for word play, love the name.
Absolutely wonderful to watch the whole process. I wish I could have some easier access to decent tools and equipment here in Brazil! =]
Awesome, awesome job dude. Thoroughly enjoyed.
I cant wait to see more of your projects. Very nice job.
Your photography is stunning, and I love the no BS, just purely on focus with the topic of the video approach. Amazing work!
Thank you?
Sorry I didn't mean to add a question mark there. Thank you!
@@BuildaBetterBike No worries at all my friend! I wasn’t sure if I had said something wrong, so thank you for clearing that up. Really looking forward to more of your content. I’ve really enjoyed every one of your videos, and I hope your channel grows rapidly so that others may enjoy your work. Take care!
Amazing stuff! Love these restorations
That... Was... Top notch!!!
I can't imagine how much work that was bro, not even counting the filming! Really enjoyed, and ofc liked and subscribed ;)
Amazing resto, but them pedals, we called them rat traps in the U.K....about 10 years ago! Love it !
These was very therapeutic for me personally, thank you 🙏
Me too!
Thanks for that. It soothed my soul.
loved the video , i had to see this after i saw your cannondale restoration i knew i haad to sub! keep up the great work :)
Wow, i like this bike. It looks so beautiful. Great job man. I would love to see a room tour of your workshop, to see all of your things you use.
Nice work and great video. I like the single ring in the front. Much better choice for what that bike is.
You did an excellent job , much impressed and appriciate it for sharing , Thanks .
Love your builds keep it up.😁 Your just a human. Humans makes mistakes we arr not perfect hehe keep the good job 💪
Love this restoration video man! Keep up the good work and I've definitely subscribed so that I can see future videos!
great job! rescuing bikes from trash and building it again is fulfilling (we rescued several frames in our channel)
You are absolutely an expert and know what you're doing, but be careful blasting off decals with your media blaster. Even the smallest amount of old adhesive can cause the media to gum up and cause headaches. There was an FNG at my previous job that wouldn't listen and kept removing vinyl decals with the blaster so when the system started clogging he was made to clean it all out and change the media.
Amazing work. Please allow more time to appreciate the finished product.
beautiful work, pleasure and relax to watch and inspiration for any job. thanks!
Skill, patience, style. My respect!

Amazing job! Love it and the footage!
I LOVE this channel Andrew!
Thanks Scott!
Wow, absolutely amazing build
Great video! I learned a lot as I’m rebuilding an older hybrid bike.
Love the skills! Very talented!
Gran trabajo de artesanos. He visto muchos videos de restauración, pero su forma de pintar es diferente a todo lo que he visto. Gran trabajo!!!
Those pedals. Shin and ankle destroyers back in the day. lol!
Love the whole build.
Call it whatever you want to call it. Awesome bike!! I was checking CZcams for all your critic's CZcams pages that had their bike rebuilds. Yeah, I couldn't' find them. Notice the trend of people who think they know everything, yet never let the rest of in on all their glorious information?? lol! Great build, I'm subscribes and will look forward to some great new videos.
Almost therapeutic to watch this. Thank you.
Just found the channel, oh boy, so relaxing to watch :)))
Amazing work and captivated me all the way through. Great video too. I have a 1992 bike I was given and I’d love to restore it. I just fear of where I live it would be stolen. Shame really.
Looks so sick🤙🏻
U re very resourceful n talented, mate. Amazing! Good job! :D
that's alot of love for a bike looks great
thankyou for the video
so interesting. super glad i stumbled across this channel. amazing work!
Thanks!
The Panaracer Dart is a front specific tire, it is supposed to be paired with a Panaracer Smoke at the back.
Still in shock that he had 2 original darts!
@@gregg3364 Panaracer still makes brand new Smoke/Dart tires. 👍
I have no idea why but watching you feature a bike gave me a sense of relaxation. It was soothing to the soul and not having someone talk the whole time or at all gave me a sense of sincerity about your channel, that you do this out of passion and enjoyment not as some way to generate views. Good job man! Do you sell the bikes or are they for your kids?
Fantastic work! Very impressive!
Thank you very much!
love the color choices, super cute!! 💖💖
That Motive was my first new mountain bike back in 1997 and I still ride it, although it has been highly modified. I added a custom milled rear adapter for disk brakes, an upgrade to 27.5 wheels and 100 mm air fork up front running a 1x9 11-42 tooth drivetrain. It's bulletproof.
Very cool!
Excellent rebuild
Nice work! Lovely bike.
I will never know this level of patience!
Don't sell yourself short! I never thought I would either. :)
Love these videos very easy and satisfying to watch. 🚲🚲
Glad to hear it!
Love the way you tore (?) the bike apart ^^
Great video love your work

I'm loving the scooter! My old man had vespa back in the 70s.🤘
the final track sounds like slow dancing in a burning room but lofi
That's because it is
This is insane..he powdercoats everything wow!! 😲 This is whole other level here..incredible 👏
Thanks!
Love these videos, am going to need you to go right on ahead and make more of them, I'll probably need 1 a week thanks 😆
Haha. My goal is two a month. But I'll see what I can do. ;)
@@BuildaBetterBike two builds a month would be so cool, or you could do one build a month and one vlog/progress update on a build
New to your channel. That's one of the most creative ways I've seen someone ask for a like and subscribe. haha. Great work on the bike!
Haha. Thanks! :)
Stupid dope rebuild. Wow. What a pleasure to watch resurrected.
