What a match. One of the best matches of all time.
Serena couldn't cope with Kerber's phenomenal defence. This player is the best backboard on the women's tour. She gets every ball back & hits some amazing defensive winners.
She not just a backboard. People don’t realize she is an aggresive counterpuncher. She hits winners with her lefty forehand
Kerber at her best was world class. One of the few matches Serena lost after playing well.
You play well in tennis when your winner count is way more than your unforced errors, Serena’s unforced errors here were silly and too many, almost triple her winners, her serve wasn’t working and her ace count was unusually low; so I disagree, Serena played very poorly by her standards, largely due to pressure and partly due to how well Kerber played. An example of a match Serena played well and still lost was Wimbledon 2008, winner count way more than her unforced errors with lots of aces but she still lost to Venus
Nirvana respectfully disagree. Serena, herself, said that Kerberos played out of her mind. Look at the amount of unforced errors Kerberos played in three sets. They are unbelievably low. Serena said she felt she needed to play more aggressive, risk more errors, because Angie was chasing down everything. The match was gripping. It is one I was able to watch as it happened. I couldn’t believe how well Angie was playing. Serena really stepped it up in the last two sets but Angie just wouldn’t be defeated. It was unreal. I base the match on its terms. A counterpuncher vs aggressive baseliner are going to have more errors from the latter. Still, Serena is usually able to win these and was leading in the final set, if I recall. Angie simply didn’t miss and kept the ball in play no matter what. Serena hit unbelievable angles, spins, power, and serving was good. That day it just wasn’t enough.
@@willybeama1 exactly!!!!
Yep, I re-watched this final many times and Serena play well I thought. Kerber is not just a backboard. She is a aggresive counter puncher like djokovic and can unleash accurate lefty forehands down the line. Combined with her game, a bit unusual with just the slice serve gave Serena problems. Thus the errors. Kerber took this final..look at the 2 dropshots in the last set. Serena was outplayed
@@user-be5qg7mr1s Even Serena herself said that Angie was just too good on this final. She said she couldn’t even be mad because Angie made like 12 errors over three sets. She just found another level that day.
2016 and 2018 where the golden years of Angelique Kerber
BEST AUSTRALIAN OPEN FINAL I've watched LIVE and its still my FAVOURITE FINAL till now😱♥️♥️♥️
The start of new Grand Slam final rival. Loved the sportsmanship. Serena your story in tennis history will forever be legendary.

I was up late watching this match live......totally didn't expect Kerber to win. Was gutted for Serena but at least she got her revenge a few months later at Wimbledon. A great match. Kerber's defense is insane.
That defense is the key of Kerber for players who hit the ball hard like Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka. Can U imagine where Kerber would have played that final against a player like Pavlyuchenkova or Kasatkina, where their game is much more varied and with slice, Kerber would lose against them. A player like Kerber gets a headache from playing against players like them. Kerber has taken two GS against Serena Williams, WB and AO. Bravo for her!🎾💯👍🏻
Alfredo Durán well she won against kasatkina when she won Wimbledon in 2018
and Angie got her revenge at Wimbledon 2018!
One of the best finals in ages. The Osaka/Kvitova final was amazing too!
That was the best match
I think caroline vs Simona 2018 also really good
@@sushmitasikdar4540 venus vs sharapova was too good
I watched this live and many times on replay. But still I get nervous watching it now. Kerber's defense was the key. German "wall".
Serena played incredible. She has to hit so many winners while blasting the ball at full power. Kerber really forces her to come up with something special on every shot. And when Serena would back off a little Kerber would step up her groundstrokes. I love this match!
Serena didn't play incredible. She hit 44 winners to 48 unforced errors and was 15/38 at the net. Absolutely awful stats for her.
@@regulusarcturus Did u see the way Kerber was defending? Like I said it's hard to hit the ball like Serena does consistently when someone is getting every ball back
@@regulusarcturus Kerber forces errors from her opponent. She retrieves everything you moron
@@roberthealy8042 No need to call me a moron for stating actual stats. Serena hit 48 UNFORCED errors, aka errors that Kerber did not force. She also had a terrible serving day, which had nothing to do with Kerber.
It’s because Kerber put a lot of pressure on her with superior defense. Her game is a bit unusual and threw Serena off
Kerber in 2016, 3 Grand Slam Finals
I am a hardcore Serena fan but I have to admit this final was phenomenal. Kerber deserved the title even Serena knew it, KERBER BEAT HER! What a way to win your 1st Slam.
This was a great champion's match and how Awesome to see Serena and Kerber at net
Their respect for each other and Serena just being so gracious in defeat is probably one of the most wonderful moments at the Aussie Open
Their smiles say it all
What a match. Kerber's shot tolerance was unmatched and her footwork is so sooooo good here, never off balance. Not as graceful as Graf on her toes but reminds me a lot of Henin's footspeed and movement as well as Halep. Anticipated Serena's patterns so well. This was Serena at the height of her powers as well, so it's a fantastic win for Kerber.
The year of Angelique
Kerber has the game to trouble Serena, she handles her pace really well and redirects it better than anyone else.
Great return games by kerber
I forgot that the third set was so close and Serena serve let her down. One of my favorite things in tennis has been to see Serena after losing a grand slam final welcome a lady into the Grand Slam Club. I loved her welcoming Angelique into the Grand Slam club in 2016 and I especially loved her welcoming Maria into the Grand Slam Club in 2004.
Serena at 13:42 was like i have to hit like 20 shots to win point😂
This wasnt just Kerbers biggest moment of her career at that point, imo this was the "Playstyle era shift" in the WTA, the Big Babe playstyle that had been the "meta" for almost 2 decades that Sells started and the Williams sisters prefected, and players like Muguruza,Sharapova, Gorgi,Azarenka,Safina, Osaka,Ostapenko all incorporated as their playstyle was now at the mercy of hyper athletic, all arounders, players like Kerber,Halep, Andrescu,Swiatek,Barty can defend these flat baseline big hitters better than other defenders/pushers/counter punchers and yet they also made their own offensive shots with heavy spin angles or laser accuracy with Solid pace which is harder to defend than just bludgeoning the ball flat at the for corners of the baseline constantly, also the more varied spins of slice, flat, topspin make flat baseliners error forcefully so the very ego boosting "Match is in my hands alone" fallacy was shattered.
This match would be the equivalent of Sampras vs Djokovic (playstyle wise)
@deepakmahajan170 Safina hit 120+mph serves regularly until her back issues forced retirement
@deepakmahajan170 Athletic players yes but they never MAXIMIZED their athletic prowess except Klisters, the one that pioneered sliding on hard courts
@deepakmahajan170 Barty and Osaka are 2-2 head to head and none of them post 2019 , and 2021 was Barty at her best, she made mince meat out of offensive flat ball strikers
@deepakmahajan170 Swiatek doesn't have biggest FH, it's only of the biggest but Sabakenka has the biggest, but it's modern techniques so it still has margin, she's used slice more often the past 2 years and that lend her to win majors now
@deepakmahajan170 and there's also a difference in just pushers (wozniacki, errani) and "Smart aggressive counter punchers" (Kerber,Halep,Gauff) they just use their unrivaled speed to get to shots that 98% of the tour gives up on and paints lines with accuracy rather than power.
BTW the Halep drug suspension is extremely shadey since one of the prosicuters was former lawyer for Sharapova, who compared to Haleps at worst genuine accident from procedure ,is nowhere near as bad as 10 consecutive years of doping for a medical condition that at best resolved 9 years prior
this is definitely one of the greatest women's tennis finals of the modern era. both players especially Kerber played out of her mind. also, Kerber was able to beat Azarenka only during this tournament in her 8th meeting so she earned this grand slam.
thanks for sharing ^.^ wow what a great defense
been waiting for this
Come on kerber!!!!!!!! Dale!!!!!
Kerbers defence can make everybody sick !!
Well, that may be your way to put it. I'd say, she is a phenomenal counter puncher, who truly works for every point of hers. She has one of the most unique styles of play on tour. Personally, my favorite !
I just love to see Serena losing because she has won so many slams it is quite boring to see her winning slams
Greatness is never boring.
Stop hating greatness
I remember people saying that about Steffi.
Its ridiculous. Appreciate her while shes here, players like these are rare
That's a stupid thing to say
Perseverance!
Serena won last 8 and even 13 out of last 14 GS finals before this match but after that she lost 6 out of 8
Great players....great match
AO channel are great, but Roland Garros block the highlights videos damn

From Roland Garros 2003 to Roland Garros 2012 it's the golden era of WTA
Serena Williams benefit from two weak era 1999-2002 and mid 2012 to mid 2017
I still think from 2017 to 2020 still weak era but it's a little bit better with new generation Osaka Andresco Swiatek Ostapenko but there's no continuously but still better than those pushers from last decade
Good to see that Serena can be a gracious and a good sport in losing, too bad she didn't remember how to do that against Osaka in the US open lol
The best women's final ever!
This match is a pure testament to the sheer talent of serena williams - Her speed and power in this match compared to how she played against Ms.Henin Hardenne at 2003 wimbledon is way lower yet the fact that she was able to not only reach grand slam finals in her late thirties but also give her much younger opponents a much harder time on court is a testament to her pure, god given talent both technically and mentally.
Serena really was her best in the 2000’s . She more in shape I felt. But its hard to compare from over years apart. The courts were much slower by this time and that changed the mens and womens game. If she volleyed better , she likely would have won.
Great job done by Kerber. She defeated serena williams. Though, Serena tried her best to win. Kerber is a great champion.
The net isn’t really Serena’s friend. When she plays doubles with her sister, people constantly try to bring Venus to the net and avoid Serena whereas they should do the opposite.
I disagree, I think it’s fairly well-known that Venus is the better Vollyer of the two sisters and also has much better anticipation at the net than Serena
@@crazycatpetera1404 he is actually agreeing with you. Read the comment again.
Most power hitters are awful at the net. Steffi, davenport, serena etc...venus is a rare breed that way.
Good l like
Serena cannot make a volley to save her life.
I like that Williams sisters always use the first ball given to serve. Wondering why players choose two from three/four balls from the ballboys/girls while somehow in the end you'll get the one you rejected tho, so why'd even bother to choose.
Players look at the different balls to decide what kind of serve they are going to do. I believe they have 8 ball circulating at a time. Every 7 games the balls will be replaced with 2 new tins (8 new balls) smoother balls (the ones that haven't been hit much) players tend to choose that for their first serve and fluffier balls (the ones that have been hit the most) for their second serve. I may be wrong about this next part but also smoother balls are better for bigger serves and fluffier balls are better for your more spinnier serves. 😀
They use 6 new balls every 9 games, except they switch after the first 7 games in the beginning (warm ups count as 2 sets). If they're serving a fast ball, they want the one with the lowest nap. If they are serving a spinner/curve they look for one with the highest nap.
Serena is so not clutch anymore. So many finals lost just by awful play or players simply outplaying her. Now that her serve isn't free point after free point and she actually has to get into many rallies, she fails.
Serena also play well
I must say that serena was taking more risky business than kerber. She was brave to go to the net, played volley, taking kerber from side to side. The defensive side of kerber was very good but she did not play variety in her game. But nevertheless she won this slam. And another two slams then got baby
Commentator says ‘one of the biggest upsets in tennis history’. Was it???
Might be an exaggeration but anytime the no.1 seed loses is an upset and especially to Kerber who had never won a grand slam until then.
Point at 12:00
Gauff and Serena I guess they both like bright Yellow color...
And the German wins.. loved it... Tired of seeing Williams winning every trophy..
It's not just the germans, I ain't german, but this is one of my fav matches ever!
#TeamAngie
Who really cares if Serena Williams wins anymore ? So sick of her winning all the time , glad to see kerber do it
Well get the hell over it! Serena is special and if she keep winning then its not her fault! She is the greatest!
i care if she wins so go away hater

She´s reaching retirement age.

in the Wimbledon 2021 semis! Finals TBD
Won 3 Grand Slams. Beat Serena in 2 finals. Was in the Wimbledon semis in 2021. That’s where she is.
Kerber didn't win, serena lost the match due to way too much unforced errors...
Another serena fanboy making excuses hahaha
It seems after this, serena really started training for a new career in sumo wrestling
Serena , too old and too slow 😭😭😭😭😀
You really don't know what you are talking about
I find Kerber's pusher/ defensive game unattractive and annoying. I prefer the attackers,-Federer like style- by far. Just my opinion. Don't come after me.
Federer is not really a pure attacker. He is an all-courter. I agree counter-puncher style is not that attractive but it can be very effective as Kerber showed.
Yes, would like to see more offensive play. She has chances to come to net but doesn't do it, backs off. Great drop shots, however!
Serena couldn't cope with Kerber's phenomenal defence. This player is the best backboard on the women's tour. She gets every ball back & hits some amazing defensive winners.
