    I appreciate the time you take to educate the public about ferrets. Really like your channel. Also your look today is gorgeous! Just had to say.

    My dad owned two different ferrets before I was born. His first one was named Sugar (an albino female) and he handed me down the first book you read from 1989. I'm so glad for the internet and people like you that give updated advice that includes sources as to why these things were harmful. When I told my dad that feeding ferrets grapes is toxic (he mentioned to me that he occasionally fed Sugar grapes as a treat and said "she loved them") he didn't believe me and then googled it and went "oh." I was glad I could educate my dad, and reassured him that it was okay he fed them grapes because he didn't know any better, and the resource he had said it was okay. Surprisingly, Sugar lived to be 8 years old, despite the feeding of grapes on occasion and old school care she was given.

      I agree :( though it was just a bit of static, the risk of it malfunctioning makes me too concerned. What if it gets wet or a ferret pees next to it? Having said that, shock collars and things like that were pretty popular back in the early 2000s so it makes sense that a product like this exists. Glass half full though: They are so unpopular nowadays that I hadn't even heard of them! That's progress!! :D

    When I was a kid, ferrets ate wet cat food, were walked on leashes as they were usually housed in small rabbit cages, and were kept singularly if male due to the fact nobody desexed ferrets and 2 males would usually fight after reaching 6 months of age
    Very glad all of this changed

    I’m really glad you took the time to explain how much misinformation is in these books and so many like them. Too many people think books like these are rules to live by and my heart aches for ferrets owned by these type of humans.

    Even without special food for ferrets and other "innovations", the grass was definitely greener thirty years ago - at least in Europe: No angoras, no badgers or other special variants with their associated genetic problems, just relatively healthy albinos and the polecat-phenotype. It is terrible what breeders did to animals.

    hey!! i’ve been dying to own a ferret for years, and i’ve really been thinking about it recently. i’ve been doing some research and i just found your videos (which i absolutely adore btw!!). So i have heard that rather than getting multiple ferrets, you can socialize them with your cats instead, do you think that’s true? I own four cats and i know they would get along really well with a ferret, but i would love to know what your opinion is! I also live in a two story house with a lot of rooms and a lot of scary places for them to get into, though i could definitely let them roam around my room (and around the rest of the house with my supervision), anyways i’m just not sure if i live in the right house for ferrets as it seems like a lot of ferret owners dedicate their entire houses to their babies. again i totally love your videos and i am so jealous of your manga collection lol! thank you so much for all your help!

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes you can let ferrets and cats interact, but it does come down to the individual personalities of both animals. I have a friend with ferrets and two cats and one of her cats loves the ferrets, while the other will attack them which can lead to serious harm. Because of this she has to keep them separated unless under strict supervision. Ferrets for Dummies 3rd Edition talks about the mixing of ferrets with cats and dogs, so I recommend looking into that book! I have a review of it on my channel, if you're interested. It's a great book for people who are looking into adopting ferrets and has so much awesome info :D

    My question about the ferrets in collars is how did you get a ferret to wear a collar? I have harnesses for my ferrets and they just walk backwards out of them because they're shaped like cones

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  Před 3 lety

      That's one of the reasons that they're seen as unsafe now. In order for it to be tight enough that they can't get out of it, it's probably going to be too tight for the ferrets to breathe properly. Not to mention if it's that tight and THEN gets stuck in something (which isn't unlikely considering how much ferrets slink around under and behind things). So yeah, collars are just a bad idea all around oof.

    Yeah I want to say something about biting i have two ferrets and one of my ferrets bites because she is anxious and nervous around new people because when my mom and my little brother was in my room and I had the ferrets out well my mom and my little brother were being loud and I was holding her and she bite me and she doesn't do that until now so I know that she doesn't feel safe and my other ferrets likes biting feet because she being playful

    • @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets
      @FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets  Před 3 lety

      Oh no that sounds like an awful situation! One of the main causes of chewing is boredom, and if I'm being honest he does sound a little pent up/frustrated. Yes, there are some ferrets that are just naturally going to chew more and unfortunately it's nothing you can fix, but I don't give up hope yet! They get a good amount of free roam time which is awesome, but baby ferrets have soooo much energy that he's probably still becoming bored. I recommend doing a REALLY INTENSE playtime before cage time to get some of that energy out. Even if he's asleep, wake him up and get playing for at least half an hour! Teaser toys, ping pong balls, dryer tubes, use any toys that get him MOVING! If you don't have a dig box, I really recommend getting one of those. They're AMAZING when it comes to getting ferret's energy out, and I'm sure your boy would appreciate it! Otherwise consider harness training and getting him outside for a backyard explore, do toy rotations, and invest in some other enrichment toys (I already mentioned a dig box, but snuffle mats are another awesome enrichment activity). Ferrets are crazy smart, and when they're babies with a lot of energy it's a recipe for disaster. Definitely keep the blankets/toys out of his cage until you see improvements because blockages with baby ferrets aren't fun at all :(

      @@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets Thank you!! Yeah they have pretty much all the toys you listed and more! They love the tubes and ping pong balls hah. They'll soon be full time roaming (and only caged when i sleep) once I sort out a few more things that need ferret proofing, maybe that will help too. I've wanted to get a dig box just unsure as to what to fill it with :O Ill definitely try more playtime! And will join the discord. Thank you so much
