    One protective item I've found extremely useful which maybe 661 can work towards in the future is a split full/half face helmet. Because a lot of my rides have an uphill component which are lower speed/lower risk but then lead to a higher risk downhill component, it's nice to have the half face for the uphill to keep from overheating, then snap on the lower section for the downhill part. I would never buy a helmet that isn't like this because it's so versatile. Also - eyewear is protective. And good beefy shoes!

    • @spuddo123
      @spuddo123 Před 2 lety +3

      Completely agree on the convertible full face, a game changer especially considering you can have one helmet instead of two

    Highly recommend Fox Baseframe Pro (the short sleeve one with shoulder pads). I don't like much bulk, but I have 2 permanent scars on both shoulders cause I always land on them. The Baseframe Pro is low-profile, light weight, breathable and offers great impact protection.
    That with a full face, goggles, gloves, kneepads and proper MTB shoes have been good enough for me when going to the bike park!
    Edit: trail riding I typically just wear a half shield and gloves. If it's more enduro (steeper tech, jumps, drops, etc) I'll also put on a knee sleeve and possibly full face depending where I'm riding.

  • @BikesTrailsandGreenways

    Very good advice and yea I also crash when I'm not padded up, every time! Recently took a tumble at a downhill park and really appreciate my 661 full face helmet. Really considering the jacket, those rib shots hurt me for weeks! Thanks for the vid!

    Leatt airflex Stealth is made in sizes large enough for big guys 6.1, 240 lbs, had several crashes, fantastic coverages chest, back, shoulders and elbows. Can even be worn in summer.

    I never wear pads during the summer when I am trail riding anything less than a black trail. All other times knee pads for warmth and protection. I have been loving my RaceFace knee pads.

    I don't remember if I watched this vid or not. it showed up, so took a look.
    I always wear my full face, no matter if it's easy or hard trails. But my current pads are Poc VDP2.0 DH Knee long, Poc VDP2.0 DH ebow, Poc VDP2.0 shin, but they are like a sauna, super warm and sweaty. But superb protection, coverage. But I take them off on the green trails.
    I tried Leatt 4.0 gloves, they have knuckle pads, but despite that they are super breathable everywhere, so far my fav gloves. But with Poc I wore medium, with Leatt it's Small. The poc Resistance gloves were not a sauna, but not super breahthable, but if riding fast enough or enough wind I could feel it, but the Leatt I feel gentle wind blowing trough.
    I recently got a Poc chest and torso protector.
    I rarely hit my shoulders, so I won't get protectors for, very low risk, but a chest guard is nice, I like that it does not have a split in the middle, so it gives protection on the whole chest.
    Thee back plate also goes down to the tale bone. But the jacket she is wearing does not. But the snaps is probably a good idea.
    But how breathable is it?

    were i live (Greece, Athens) I wear a full face, knee pads, body armor w elbow pads and gloves and i will at some point probably get shorts with protection but here the climbing is done on asphalt were you can take the helmet off. Still on the downhills i don't notice the gear (unless some sharp stiches rub against my skin) so if you are wondering you will notice it less that you think going downhill (probably). when doing some trials stuff and trick and wheelies you will

      A bunch of brands offer padded hip shorts, after a fall on some jagged rocks resulting in a big ol' hematoma on my hip I've been eyeing them up, just do a search on jenson or somewhere similar to browse some of the stuff out there. If your not seeing something you like the look of, you can always go brand by brand on manufacturer websites to really dig deep.

    • @troymortimer3487
      @troymortimer3487 Před 2 lety +1

      It seems to be a contentious discussion. I’m not subject matter expert, however a trauma surgeon(biking enthusiast ) was really happy to see that my child had a brace on when a full face was worn. His rule of thumb, if you have full face on, make sure you neck brace to support it.
