  • Hey Guys! It's bike park season and that means it's also crashing season. Considering that, I thought it might be a good idea to invest in some body armor. But those protective garments aren't always stocked in our local bike shops. So I ordered nearly $1,000 worth of gear to check out before making a decision. I hope this video might assist you in making a decision on which pieces of protective gear to buy. Thanks for watching!
    Winners:
    Troy Lee Designs Long Sleeve - amzn.to/2JYRMq6
    Leatt Impact Shorts - amzn.to/30VSiL2

    Awesome info and video! I'm a new mtb rider and currently shopping around for protection and definitely liking a full sleeve type like yours. I think I'll be getting the Sixsixone as its the only one that comes with the D30 armor (that's the orange flexible foam). It's an excellent protective material and they use it on some high end motorcycle jackets (I have it on my Klim riding jacket). If it's good enough for that, then I'm pretty confident it'll protect me on those trails. Thanks!

    One I would also recommend looking at is the EVS Sports Men's Comp Suit . They don't market in mountain bike circles, only motocross and off road vehicle areas, but they are virtually the same style. I have an older EVS compression jacket (yes with zipper, none of the new EVS have zippers) left over from my motocross days that is still in good shape and I will be using it at end of this month when I go to Snowshoe for the first time.

    Hey Mr Tonka, what an awesome video.
    Only the third video of yours I have seen, but I'm subscribed now !
    I am constantly frustrated that when magazines or CZcams channels review products they don't offer some comparison to similar products.
    Because that's really what I need when I go to make a purchase.

Idk why i thought it was a good idea to do that slope without gear. It would've saved me and i couldve been riding still. Thanks for this indepth look at the gear you've shown. I just got a Onewheel XR + earlier this week, and although I was taking my time to learn, I felt I was getting comfortable (a little too comfortable) and decided to take a ride last night, not a good idea especially on the way back home when I had to ride up a long hill that I was not used too. I ended up hitting the pavement at 16mph in the freakin' dark!. Came away with minor scratches, but man that pavement impact was like playing tackle football being hit by linebackers back in my day.... not fun. My wrist is just really sore and a little swollen. Very cool, thanks! I just bought the 7855 for my 7yro, Its of note that its compatible with neckbraces as well. Its awesome that they make it for kids too...hard to find anything decent for them that isn't huge/akward/hot or just simple hard pads like EVS or roost protectors. Hardpads don't help as much as people think. Its like having a hard shell helmet with no foam padding etc...it'll take care of the abrasion and deflect a rock but its not damping the impact hardly at all. Question, why did you not try out the Troy Lee protective shorts to go with the shirt?

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  Před 4 lety +1

      I had a pair of Troy Lee shorts from when i crashed at Snowshoe and wasn't too fond of them. After i decided to keep the shorts in this video, i saw that the Troyless shorts i bought were a JR large. haha Maybe thats why i don't like them. lol

    I went through a pretty similar and painstaking process about 2 years ago and ended up with the TLD 7850 HW...the short sleeve one. It was either that or the iXS in the end. It's a pain in the butt to get on and off and a little short on the back... but it's really well ventilated. You don't really notice it and it's very protective for the 'lightweight' category. I always wear my elbow pads so I didn't want long sleeve.
    Btw I'm pretty sure the HW stands for 'hot weather' hence it being the short sleeve / more breathable version?...

    good comparison. But, HW in tld shirt name is no heavy weight but hot weather. Its light weight protective shirt with very good coverage, its beathable and ventilated. They use strata foam, which is dual density foam and works quite okay. Works on similar principle which is used for example in back procetors or chest protector. Its not en1621 certified. It will help definately and in your case it may help a lot. In general i would recommand: ixs trigger/carve jersey (i have trigger and it can be used as jersey), POC VPD Air+ Tee (my friend is very satisfied with it), 661 evo compression jacket (my friend have it and he likes it, but he use Dainese Pro Armor Lumbar Protector with it), leatt 3df airfit, oneal bulletproof jacket (i have one which i use only in bike parks).

I could have used this before our trip though, all was fine at Snowshoe but we stopped at Dupont on the way there and I crashed on Ridgeline, more protection would have helped.

    Any suggestions for enduro type sleeve pads or some lighter padding? I do more xc, enduro stuff here in east Texas. We have little to no DH riding or massive jump tracks so I don't need anything too crazy. I've been looking at the offers from Fox, Alpinestars, Dakine, and POC. Really leaning toward the Fox Enduro pads. Any suggestions are appreciated. p.s. rather not break the bank

      Living in FL may go to knee pads are the Kali Strikes. They are about 93% as protective as thicker and hotter pads. They are comfortable, stay in place, washable and I’ve had them for more than a year. They make elbow pads as well. 👍

    I know it’s late to comment but I did have the tld long sleeves for a while and actually liked the inner arm pad I actually used them in a crash last year. I ended up getting rid of them because of the pain to get in and out of them. On park days I currently use the fox jacket but it’s only usable for park/shuttle days. I do not have a chest protector for trail days but I do use ixs Full length shin and elbow protectors and wear a backpack. Would I like a chest protector? Yes and from this video I think I’d be tempted by a 661 I’d I could find one to try on.

    • @MrTonka

      The 661 jacket was quite comfortable. I figured out a technique to get out of the TLD long sleeve when in Whistler. Once I did, it was a piece of cake, even when sweaty. 👍

    I'm looking to dual purpose the Leatt shorts for both mountain biking and learning how to snowboard. Does that protect the tailbone well enough? The impact protection on the sides looks great, but that coccyx protection kinda looks small.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka  Před 2 lety

      I think that is a serious piece of kit. Hard pass for enduro riding though. Unless of course you take it off for the climbs and transfers. But for DH or park laps, i'd be keen to give it a go. If it fit better it might be better than my TLD upper garment. Smaller over all bulk with just as much kee point protection. Looks legit.

      Just thought I'd put in my $0.02. I have the Fox Titan Sport armored jacket. It's hard plastic armor attached to a mesh long sleeve shirt. It really doesn't restrict my movement on the bike, is relatively comfortable, breathes tremendously well and the elbow guards stay in place. Standalone elbow pads tend to slip down towards my wrists. I wear a thin base layer long sleeve shirt underneath. When I take a lunch break, all I have to do is unzip it from the front and take it off.
