  • Made of wholesome goodness of lentils and fresh Palak leaves, the Palak Palya or Dal Palak goes well with Chapathi or White Rice.
    Ingredients:
    Toor Dal/Pigeon Peas - 1/4 Cup
    Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
    Spinach/Palak - 1 Big bunch, 4 Cups
    Oil - 1 & 1/2 Tbsp
    Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
    Cumin Seeds - 1 & 1/2 tsp
    Green Chillies - 3 Slit
    Chopped Onion - 1 Big-sized
    Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 Tbsp
    Tomato - 1 Big-sized
    Salt - 1 & 1/4 tsp
    Method:
    1. Put 1/4 cup of Toor Dal in a pressure cooker container. Rinse it twice with water. Add enough water to cover the Dal by about an inch. Add 1/4 teaspoon of Turmeric powder. Cook on a medium flame for 4 whistles. Once the pressure has fully released, remove the lid. Dal should cook soft.
    2. Heat 1 & 1/2 tablespoons of oil in a kadai. Once the oil is hot, add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds, and 1 & 1/2 teaspoons of Cumin Seeds. Add 3 slit Green Chilies. Mix everything thoroughly.
    3. Add one large, finely chopped Onion. Once the Onions are well incorporated with the seasoning, add 1/4 tsp of Turmeric Powder. After roasting the Onions for a minute, stir in 1 Tbsp of Ginger Garlic Paste.
    4. When the raw aroma of the Ginger Garlic Paste fades, add one finely chopped Tomato. Combine the Tomatoes well with the seasoning. Ensure the Tomatoes are cooked until soft. After the Tomatoes are cooked properly, add washed and chopped Palak/Spinach.
    5. The chopped Palak/Spinach amounted to 4 Cups. Once the Palak is added, mix it well. Stir carefully on a low flame. Next, add the cooked Dal and stir it well. Pour in additional water to achieve the desired consistency of the Dal Palak.
    6. Cover and simmer on a low flame for 5 minutes. Open the lid, give it a mix, then cover again and let it cook. At this point, add 1 & 1/4 tsp of Salt and combine well. Turn off the flame after 1-2 minutes. Continue cooking until this stage.
    Serve this Dal Palak/Palak Dal with hot Rice or Chapati.
