BRICKLAYING: Laying Light Weight Blocks High Up, Tips & the Most Annoying Building Regulation EVER!

  • Just a vid showing how we lay light weight blocks for the top courses.
    I’m showing the blob method again, window clips and wall tie drip position.
    I try and cover the building regulation which makes our job a lot harder… full blocks under lintels. This basically means no splits or any block less than 330mm in length to be laid directly under a lintel. It can make it a bit of a jigsaw as the regs are also ‘no vertical straight joint longer than 300mm (4 brick) and horizontal bond minimum off 100mm.
    With a bit of thinking it isn’t too hard to achieve and gives the inspectors nothing to pull.
    Thanks for watching! 👍👍

    Fk me..I had NO clue about the ties going the "right way up"..never even heard of it before! Maybe I'm not gonna be cut out for this site work in the future 😂😂
    Very good video mate..very different to how we do things on extensions I can tell you that.😂 can you not put x2 course of brickets around the whole job like I see all the time on new builds? I guess this way saves almost a pack of brickets though. More videos like this mate!👌👌👍
    Have a great weekend fella🍻🍻👍

      😂 yeah site work can be a bit mental with all the regs👎 it’s ace on extensions when the inspector knows you do a good job and they just say “ give us a ring when the roof is on” 👌🏼👌🏼
      Yeah this house has 2 course of splits right round down stairs… 9 block and a split to get to lintel ( 2.1) then a split and a block to get to joist (2.4) . Upstairs on the gables it’s full blocks go all the way up so no need for 2 course of splits. Most houses we do have a course of splits front and back but This house has a bit of a random wall plate height so it’s full blocks from joist to wall plate. 👍 have a good one Izzy 👊🧱

    Mate, helpful tips and you make it look easy. I'm planning building a simple garage and workshop space, so I'm watching all the YT how to build tutorials. Mate, one very simple question has been bugging me; when you guys mark up the plumb line reference marks on the uprights are you using he depth of the block/brick plus 1/4 inch for the muck? The reason I ask is surly if you just mark the brick depth you'll be way out after couple of runs?
    Cheers for taking the time to make and post this up - I know it's going to help.

      No prob! Good to hear the vids are useful😀👍
      I’ve just done a garage conversion and a garden room at my house so I’ll prob get round to doing a vid on it 👍
      Yeah, your totally right! We mark the gauge allowing for block plus a mortar bed. Or a brick plus a mortar bed.
      We are metric so it’s quite simple. For block work it is 225mm, 450mm, 675mm, 900mm etc…
      Then for brick work it’s 75mm, 150mm, 225mm, 300mm, 375mm, 450mm etc.
      As you can see, every 3 bricks plus 3 beds (225mm) high is equal to 1 block and 1 bed so the wall ties work.
      Good luck with your project !! You tube tutorials are brilliant for that type of stuff !! 😀👍 thanks for commenting 😊👍🧱

      Cheers Nellie!! Lol well said!
      To be fair I put an apex shed against my detached garage ( single skin) and when it rained the bricks reached saturation point and pissed in like a waterfall ! If it was up against the house it would have been in the cavity!! I reacon they are made to be acceptable both ways up but “ tits down is probably optimal”. Thanks for commenting mate 👍👍🧱

      I agree, never seen water running down the inside of a cavity. I was on a large city center block built in the 60,s. We were working in a service shaft the outer skin was just half brick at least 3 storeys high. Despite heavy continuous rain (Manchester!) never saw one drop of rain.

    For a right hander right to left always the best to come on the blocks even more so at height find same with brick on edge or soldier courses although prefer left to right running in face work. Tits down mate haha never knew that 1 with wall ties. 🤟🤟

    Do you normally start building the inner or the outer leaf?

    • @brickworkfundamentals4636
      @brickworkfundamentals4636  Před 2 lety

      We build the inner leaf first…. We take the blockwork up 6 courses then build 21 courses of bricks. We then go back inside and do another 3 courses of blocks. This is then ready for scaffolding. On the second lift we do the brickwork to joist height then jump inside and do a course of blocks off the trad decking. This is then ready for scaffolding and floor joists. 3rd lift we do 7 course of blocks then get ready for the inspection. Then we do 21 courses of bricks. Then jump inside and do another 3 course of blocks. This is ready for scaffolding. 4th lift we do the blocks first the bricks to wall plate. Top outs… blocks then bricks. 👍👍 sorry about the long answer ( I’ve had a coffee 😂) to be fair a lot of the gangs I see these days are doing bricks first on the first lift. The rest of the house they usually do similar to the way we do it.
      Obviously if you’ve got king span it’s block first anyway 👍 🧱

    I think these house builders need to let a gang build a house on daywork with full holiday/sick pay/travel costs/company car/pension contributions to the exact Nhbc standards,and follow full health and safety compliance and see how much it should cost them and time to get the finished article!!!! Bloody tie wires upside down!!! Cant even keep the lads supplied with dry bricks in a consistent time off the stacker,makes me laugh,very good video though mate

      @brickworkfundamentals4636  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for commenting Joseph👍👍
      I wouldn’t mind stopping at 8 but it isn’t high enough for trad. I’m 5,7 and 9 is fine. Just gotta make sure there is daylight between the block and the line. So easy for them to start tipping if someone is hard on the line. Can even check them for plumb with your level as you go down the line.
      We do 6 course of block first, then 21 course of brick then go back in for 3 more course of block.
      I know a lot of gangs start with 21 course of brick then go inside and back it up with 9 course of block in one go.
      Either way we are reaching. Defo takes a bit of practice if you’re not used to it 👍👍 thanks again for commenting pal 😊👍
