Tying the Dark Destroyer Pike Fly

  • I designed the Dark Destroyer to tempt my local river pike during murky water conditions this autumn/winter. The original was darker with a hint of chartreuse nayat under the wing. This variant widens the profile with the addition of a JBM Brush, which also seems to exaggerate the jerk action and of course brighten the fly. First cast this week the fly got hit pretty hard so I might tie a few more.
    Material:
    Hook: Partridge Absolute Predator 4/0
    Thread: Veevus PB2 140 White
    BigFly Fibre Black
    Hedron Magnum Flashabou - Moonlight
    Funky Glow in the dark Flash Hanks (Chartreuse)
    Medium Dunn Bucktail
    Hedron Original Flashabou (Opel)
    Hedron Lateral Scale
    Grizzly saddle hackle
    Jerkbaitmania Pike Skinz Brush (Lime)
    Foxytails Nayat (Snow Runner) Black - or use SF Blend, Icelandic Sheep or Funky Fibre
    Wool roving black mixed with Angelina Fibre black
    Dubbing was Angelina black or use what ever you have to cover the wraps.

    Amazing video Paul. Great job! In which water conditions do you fish these streamers? Do they work in clear water? Thanks a lot for teaching us! :) best regards

      Hi Tim, i tend to fish this pattern when in low light or if there is colour in the water. Thanks for the compliment

    Beautiful fly, Paul. Please tell us more about the adhesive used for the eyes.

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 5 lety +1

      I mention it a fair bit in recent videos. I mostly use Evostik Serious Glue as its non toxic. Works very well, but it's always worth coating the eyes and the front of head with a UV resin. The weak point with most eyes in the epoxy moulding to the foil.

    Hey mate, what sort of vice is that? Do you think it would hold an 8/0 hook?
    Keep up the good work!

      Cheers..It's an Atlas vise made by Wolf Indiana. I've used up to 7/0 with no problem so 8/0 should be fine. Toby stocks them at Funky

    What size is the Pike Skinz? Is the UK the only place to get these?

  • @edwardcrumb8127
    @edwardcrumb8127 Před 6 lety

    What size Pike Skinz did you use? they come in a bunch of different sizes. also....is the color in the video electric yellow? I cant find a lime color.

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 6 lety

      Edward Crumb yeah my mistake it's electric yellow. Think this was the large brush. I know JBM have some different sizes now and after the video was made. Nightmare Musky Flies (NA) have some, but check with Tony. Where are you based?

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 6 lety +1

      Not one shop unfortunately. Try Flytyingeu, DeerCreek and Jerkbaitmania. Nayat is from Skeena River Fly Supplies or Foxytail. FlyDressing are also doing it now

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 2 lety +1

      Very old vid John, I recall it was a synthetic brush. You could use anything really in the midsection to add a splash of colour.

    sinking or
    floating ?

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 7 lety

      Very slow sink. The fly is designed to hang and jerk so use the line to fish it at the depth you want. Hope that helps

    Nice fly bud but have to say I don't see the merit to using BFF as a tail and Cutting out the curly stuff. If not requiring bulk in an area it is much cheaper to use the fibres from a cheap straight hair party wig. Think it is almost identical to the staight fibres in BFF and way cheaper. I really like your patterns though 👍

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  Před 5 lety +1

      Lol...it's an old video and was using materials I had and was using then. The video is just a guide and agree a wig is a cheaper option. Personally I prefer nayat as it moves better. I'll leave it up to the tyer to decide what they want to sub

    • @garylawlor2288
      @garylawlor2288 Před 5 lety +1

      @@paul_monaghan I understand dude 👍 using what you had to hand. Funny that you mention Nayat cause I was thinking that also but as it is not so cheap I only mentioned the wig. The wig material is suprisingly good, nice and shiny and slightly translucent. Makes lovely sea trout and bass flies like surf candy styles.
