Don’t Recast Jonathan Majors: Marvel Needs to Cut Kang the Conqueror

- Jonathan Majors, convicted on criminal charges, signals major shifts for himself and the MCU. Following verdicts in the Jonathan Majors trial seeing Johnathan Majors guilty on counts of assault and harassment, Marvel has dropped the actor. IGN's Kim Horcher breaks down why Marvel Studios should also part ways with Kang the character, as his launch as the next big-bad of the MCU hasn't really gone off without a hitch, plus Marvel has other big name villains like Galactus, Doctor Doom and Magneto just waiting to get into the action.
Disney/Marvel Studios didn’t wait long after the Jonathan Majors trial update to make their announcement they were dropping him. Jonathan Majors, found guilty in a New York courtroom, may signal the end of an acting career. Jonathan Majors, fired by his reputation, is now Jonathan Majors, fired from Marvel. What is Jonathan Majors’ future? Marvel may have planned for what to do about Jonathan Majors, evidence may show, well before the Jonathan Majors court drama even played out.
With Jonathan Majors fired, Marvel is at a crossroads. What more could the news of Jonathan Majors Fired as Kang mean? Who could replace Jonathan Majors? Fired Disney /Marvel villain aside, the company has had a real issue with the character. Could Jonathan Majors Fired from Disney mean more? Is there anything left for the character after the departure of Jonathan Majors? Fired from Kang isn’t enough because there could always be a Kang recast. It’s actually time to leave the character behind too.
Kang the Conqueror in the MCU may not be the exact Kang the Conqueror Loki, comic fans, or even Marvel studios was expecting. What went so wrong with Kang? He Who Remains had an impressive first appearance in the MCU in Marvel’s Loki, but he isn’t making quite the impact we might have expected based on the Marvel Comics version. Judging from the first season finale of Loki, Kang the Conqueror posed a multiversal threat as fans wondered “Who is Kang the Conqueror?” and could he be the end for our anti-hero in Loki season 2.
Decidedly, no. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to have big plans for the new encompassing villain at Marvel Studios, with designs for a Kang Dynasty movie. But one thing tipped fate in the other direction: Quantumania. Jonathan Majors aside, his character as the erstwhile Avenger villain just don’t seem to work as the Kang the Conqueror Marvel Comics promised us just doesn’t match the version of Kang the Conqueror Jonathan Majors actually plays on screen.
Should this be the end of the Kang the Conqueror Marvel experiment? Is there still room for Kang the Conqueror, MCU-wide? We’re breaking down the case against Kang in here at IGN. Don’t forget to follow our other IGN MCU coverage, MCU analysis, and more. Let us know your thoughts on the viability of Kang the Conqueror!

Marvel fumbled Kang so badly. The case against Majors wasn’t even the issue. And his performance in Ant-Man certainly wasn’t the problem. Kang should have defeated Ant-Man. This would have established him as an actual threat. He should have appeared in more movies, creating a thread that actually connected this phase. He had the potential to be an incredible villain but they completely mishandled him.
Right?? Heck, it wasn't even Ant-Man that defeated him. It was freaking ants. Ants from freaking earth. This guy destroyed and killed both Thor + Hulk. The Avenger's powerhouses and of course the others, probably including Wanda and Captain Marvel. He most probably destroyed worlds if not universes, that may have drawn attention from many other heroes/threats. Only to be defeated by a handful of ants from planet Earth. Smh. Even a 5 year old can write better than this.
Let's not forget what they did to Modok.

Putting Kang in the Ant-Man movie and having him defeated made the biggest mistake in the Multiverse Saga. That film has no consequences whatsoever.
Alternately, putting Kang in Ant-Man movie and having him defeated is the biggest consequence whatsover.
Even though that Kang is just 1 variant of the conquerer.
ant man movie was unwatchable.

He should have killed Ant man or even Hank pym
The whole buildup for the Multiverse saga will be so disappointing if they just cut Kang. Also cutting Kang makes Loki's sacrifice meaningless and would also mean that Loki's decision has no real consequence or repurcussion. He Who Remains kept things going the way they were to stop the multiversal war from happening. What Loki did won't stop the multiversal war from happening again, it will only allow the multiverse to continue to grow without the loom pruning the timelines. Incursions will continue to happen and we should see the multiversal war break out again followed by battle-world in Secret Wars.
There is no buildup. Nobody feels anything from Marvel anymore.

You would be joining a very very large % of the general audience who are already at that conclusion.
I’d rather they recast Kang than abandon the story they’ve set up.
Don’t cut Kang! Stop encouraging the MCU to throw away great comic characters because of the actors. We’ve already lost T’Challa! There’s nothing wrong with recasting! And so far, if you haven’t been impressed with Kang in the MCU, blame the writers, directors, or the studio. If the actor had better material, Kang could be more imposing.
It's no suprise really 😅
Exactly. Chris Hemsworth is a great example. Thor was catastrophic. But is it Chris's fault or the script's fault? Why we appreciated Victor Timely in Loki compared to Ant Man for example.
@@marcuselvard5922half of this point is right cause the only script issue is Kang losing. Anytime he showed up he was tremendous
Kang is definitely a great character.
Recast Kang.
Finish this story and see Kang through. Recast him. They are in the multiverse and this is the best excuse as to why his variant looks different
Exactly
Or go through secret wars, with Doom, and have the MCU completely reset. They can then try Kang again in the new universe.
Bring in either John Boyega, David John Washington or David Oyelowo to recast Kang just to finish off this saga

was clearly just trapped in the device for usage letter
She doesn’t know what she’s talking about!
He was defeated
In order to get a proper new villain, Kang has to be fleshed out. Rushing in a new character would be a disservice, can’t do Dr Doom like that. He would need his own saga of movies
👍
Very true. It’s like if Thanos was killed off in Phase 2 and suddenly Ultron came back. The Multiverse Saga has already established Kang as its main threat and the MCU needs to continue with that storyline if people are gonna stay any kind of invested
The fact that people actually think he died in Quantumania is a head scratcher. He clearly was going to return, otherwise it would've been much more definitive than what was shown.
It’s not that deep, most things are filmed, shot and concluded in ways that hint to a sequel but could be ended. Clearly they wanted for the outcome and made editing choices to move on either way
We forgot about iron mans past 🤦🏽

This is a horrible opinion. It will make Loki's sacrifice seem pointless. Just recast and build him up better. We need to see why Kang was posed as such a grave threat.
Lame
Doesn’t make it pointless lol
Thank you. That is a horrible take
@@SPACEKNOCKERZ76yes it does. Removing Kang means Loki was all for nothing, nothing will change the future. Recast him, like they did with Hulk and War Machine.
SPOILER ALERT 🚨
This is the worst idea! There's nothing wrong with recasting a character. Dumping Kang means dumping everything that came out after End Game. The Character is great and has a LOT of potential that was not yet explored by Marvel. They have to dump the bad writers or executives pressing those artists.
Just so we are clear, it’s not the character, the actor, or the verdict, but rather the story that is the problem with this phase of the MCU. Majors killed the role so much so they wanted to make him the central villain. Loki 2 was epic. The problem with Quantumania was that Kane, being so powerful, was defeated by Antman and friends which is ridiculous. That doesn’t seem like a multiversal threat at all.
No just recast. Kang is super cool and people want to see his story play out.
People want to see his story play out? Im a mcu fan but lets be real here, according to the facts, Ant man 3 earned 200 MILLION LESS than ant man 2, loki season 2 has LESS viewers than loki season 1.
So sorry only disney die hards want that guy.
@@seanjustin2082 Your info is wrong. Ant man made $476 million. Loki season two had 11.2 million views which is just 2 million shy of game of thrones season 8 which is the biggest show ever.
the bold move would have been to let kang win in quantumania. the repercussions wouldn't necessarily have to be immediate. they could have still worked towards the next avengers movie. it would've been "easy" to have the exiled one be attacked by the kang council and killed, showing how much more dangerous these other variants could be. that's what the post-credits should have shown.
This is probably the WORST possiblle take I've seen on this. Whoever did this knows nothing about Marvel Comics or the MCU for that matter

Multiverse means they can easily replace the actor as not every version of you in the multiverse is going to look or act alike. They are already doing it with Prof X & Reed Richards
Gotta let it ride with Kang so that they can learn from their mistakes and perfect Doom.

Loki season 2 absolutely nailed the handling of Kang. Marvel knew what they could be facing and laid a perfect contingency plan in that finale
They have to show some of the ‘Loki’ S2 finale in one of the movies somewhere in order to explain it.
He really f'd up the next phase of the MCU, this is the equivalent if Josh Brollin did the same thing around the time Civil War came out and they had to scrap Thanos for Infinity War out of the blue and come up with something new.
Oh so u don't know? Josh did have his own drama going on. It was ignored
Josh was the recast actor for the original Thanos from 2012. 😂 MCU could have recast him again since he was just CGI and you didn’t notice Thanos was recast. 😂
No, this would be more like if they had to recast him around age of ultron. Kang dynasty isn’t out for years, so there is plenty of time to take alternate routes/recast. When civil war came out, infinity war was nearly ready to shoot
Or like if Ezra Miller strangled people in public while filming The Flash! Could you imagine if he did that?
The problem is marvel needed to do the hard work and build these new characters slowly. Everything was rushed and we’ve seen every level of villain at this point that nothing feels like anything is actually at stake anymore
i’m sorry but to just cut off and shut down whatever plans they have with kang would just be crazy. like them shooting themselves in the foot as if they haven’t already. they would have to write our an entire new saga and somehow explain how all this build up of kang is no more. a recast isn’t gonna hurt them especially when it’s not like kang has even reach his peak in marvel yet.
People blame the actors when the movie is bad but Ant Man's problem was the writer. Chris Hemsworth is a great example. Thor was catastrophic. But is it Chris's fault or the script's fault? Why did we like Victor Timely in Loki compared to Kang from Ant Man for example? We need to recast Kang and the writers as well. I'll do a better job introducing Kang if you ask me.
So IGN, we don’t come to y’all for opinion pieces. Just report some facts and we’d still have Jonathan Majors probably instead of losing him on bogus charges and conviction. Keep the opinion editorial pieces.
You honestly think IGN has the power to frame actors?
They're not bogus charges. There's literally CCTV footage of them shoving each other around an SUV in New York and then him trying to force her into the car, then of her chasing after him. Neither of them are innocent and both seem to have issues.
Ok men’s rights activist. WTF does IGN have to do with Major’s? The video isn’t even about Majors. And as another has pointed out the charges are not bogus, there’s video evidence
Yeah, definitely bogus charges.

This is a crazy take even from you ign they should recast him and continue the story
The entire gimmick of his character is that there’s an infinite amount of variants of him, not exactly the hardest to recast
Nope, because Marvel have been building the character up in Loki series and Ant-Man movie. He could be the greatest super-villain in cinema, because of his complex character and abilities
The character seemed irrelevant after Antman whooped him.
How do y'all not understand that wasn't The Kang the CONQUEROR that was just a variant!!
@@iSaleSingles you could be right but no one has said different in any movie or anyone in marvel. It can’t be on us to fill in blanks

IGN pls rethink this y’all even said this was a bad idea
The problem with Kang is that he does not look intimidating at all
That's because you have seen Kang in Quantumania. He is very powerful once he is out.
And Loki does?
I’m not sure if they should ditch the Kang character because the act of recasting a character needs to be restandardised, it doesn’t make any kind of business sense to just permanently fridge entire characters just because of something that happens to the actor’s outside of the project. It’s not fair for the studio’s to pivot their ideas when one of their hired hands has an impulsive fit of rage..
Wasn't impulsive much less a fit of rage
Dude got convicted for hurting someone’s finger. Now they want to fire him. SMH.
No thank you ign …. Let them recast and finish the story -
Easy fix: John Boyega as Kang. He’s unproblematic and already been in Star Wars movies so Disney has his number
Could Marvel stop cutting out all the cool characters that make up marvel because of the actor.
Please see the kang story through.
They should recast
There’s already the idea that not everyone looks the same
Soooo anyone else notice the long stretches of blank screen but with credits. Seems like y'all are missing segments/art in several parts of this video.
They will recast Kang because it makes sense that it's just variants of himself. Then when the dust clears, it will come full circle and end up right back here anyways.
Let's face it, Kang or not, the MCU is going downhill and simply replacing a big bad isn't going to bolster the appeal. They are going to need to completely overhaul the way they script movies and how they approach storytelling. Plus lessen the number of projects coming out. Bringing other big bads is a very small portion of the overall issue
Since Ant Man defeated Kang in Quantumania and now that Kang is seemingly out of the MCU, Ant Man didn't actually mess up and he's still the MVP.
RECAST KANG… end of dilemma…plz don’t change the story line
They CAN’T Just Move on For Kang. Literally NOT. They have already Committed to The Multiverse Sage with Kang at the center. So Just Recast
Kang was found guilty by the Council of Ex Girlfriends ......For trying to get back his phone
just recast the man, already. Keep Kang the dynasty going.
Kang was not the problem with phase 5. You want him to be a Thanos level vilian give him 10 years to grow into that character like Thanos had! They absolutely should recast him.
At this point, Marvel has to drop the entire multiverse nonsense and start making some coherent, grounded movies where things actually matter. By now, every hero has met, fought with and defeated an immortal, omniscient, all powerful cosmic being which lives outside the boundaries of the universe. And they all did it by engaging in a badly choreographed punching fight. Gimme a break.
If Kang actually beat ant man he would of been a threat. Thanos killed half planets and didn't care who had to go as long as he achieved his goal. sooooo bring in Dr. Doom, he will give off that Thanos energy.
Dr Doom is likely going to be brought into this in Kang Dynasty and will be the main villain in Secret Wars.
This makes little sense at all. To say Kang wasnt working when he was the only interesring thing about phase 4 & 5 is laughable. Kang was literally just getting started. We hadn't even got a chance to see the real 3 big bads that were teased at the end of Ant Man 3
The core didn’t kill him. The season finale of Loki addressed this slightly. He is stuck in a probability storm!
Don’t give up and Kang, yes recast. No reshoots for happy endings. Kang should’ve beat and possibly ended ant-man. Marvel didn’t stick the landing.
How did he get cut without a chance to appeal his case? He is on video running AWAY from her and NYPD actually arrested her in the first place. The jury came up with a shoddy split decision that will be appealed. Disney moved too quickly to get rid of this talented actor.
Kang got himself twisted up in his own timeline. Wrote himself out unfortunately
Dont cut Kang. He's gonna beat this dumb case
Here's an idea: Don't have a "big baddie" planned out from the start. Go back to doing more "episodic" films with crossovers here and there, but let those stories speak for themselves. That's what made early Marvel movies so great compared to the DCEU. And if the writers get inspiration and find themselves drawing the characters and film series together for a "grand finale," that's great -- and if not, that's great, too!
Part of what people find hard to take with Marvel movies is just how deeply interlocked they are and how much _other stuff_ you have to see in order for the film you _want_ to see to make sense. Going back to a more episodic format would draw in new viewers more easily as well as being a breath of fresh air for long-time viewers like myself.
Recast. Needs to be done
Recast him so the story can go on. Don’t let it be like another Fantastic 4 reboot.
A Kang variant is not a leap it makes way more sense that they ended the victor timely Kang variants .now they move on to Scarlett centurion.
Just end the storyline. With the way Loki ended you could safely end the Kang journey right there and just bring in a new big bad.
The entire saga is centered around Kang. That’s like if they killed off Thanos in Phase 2 and instead gave us Apocalypse. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, does it?
Soooo Ant-Man really did defeat Kang 😂
the judge did
Loki did technically.
Great video!
Nah recast him he’s a multiverse type person so they can be another that looks different
Is there any way mcu can reopen kang storyline after secret wars with different actor?
Because secret wars is mainly focused around dr doom
Or like after secret wars there's no storyline left for kang?
The Kang dynasty is supposed to be the set up of secret wars so it wouldn’t make sense to continue it after it was supposed to have already been finished
Denzel Washington casted as the new Kang, that would be off the chain lol
Y’all need to go ahead and delete this video, she said all of that and said nothing at the same time smh
Have Kang take a step back, maybe introduce The Squadron Supreme. They could have been on Thanos's ship, brought into the future timeline
Some of the ‘Loki’ series will *have* to be shown in theatres in order to explain some of the more crucial multiversal and ‘Kang’ stuff in one movie or another.
