  • The Peacekeeper's War (1992)
In Liberia, AFL government forces fought a vicious civil war against rebel forces led by Charles Taylor.

Taylor's Patriotic Front, the NPFL, broke a truce of two years by staging an attack on Monrovia, Liberia's main port. What started as a civil war soon became something else, as the seven-nation West African peacekeeping force, Ecomog, joined the fray.

Not that I supported any factions of this senseless war, but ECOMOG bombed the Firestone Rubber Plantations because of their financial support to Charles Taylor. In order to stay operational with extremely low-cost labor, Firestone funded Taylor's war at a critical time when he was out of weapon and money for sustaining his advances. Peace was absolutely attainable then, as he had no other choice. But Firestone threw him a life-line of only a few million dollars in return for cheap rubber. And because of that the war lasted another 13 years! AT the cost of many thousands of lives lost.

So except for their utter failure, yeah, it was a great success. Ironically, considering your post, it was the Americans that led Nigeria back into the country as the UN took over peace-keeping, and the UN keep the peace to this day.

The rebels were soundly beaten back in 1990 under joshua dogonyaro who is fondly remembered in Liberia. subsequently he was redeployed home reverses occurred under less capable commanders. t is held by some that the conflict was prolonged due to Nigerian internal politics and a need to keep the army occupied. when sani abacha came to power he resolved to end the conflict and brought taylor to the bargaining table by force of arms. thus the first stage ended. for the second stage it is recorded widely on camera that Nigerian forces spearheaded the advance into Liberia and the USMC boys came about a week later. Incidentally shortly after the marines came ashore mortars were fired in monrovia outskirts and the marines withdrew to the ship. Is that one the leadership you are talking about. Subsequently the AFL was rebuilt under a series of Nigerian officers seconded to the AFL and the AFL is nw keeping the peace elsewhere in africa. don't let hatred or pettiness cloud the sacrifices of brave men in your eyes. They took over the country. Taylor wasn't beaten until the Americans arrived.
