Hessaire MC61V swamp cooler - one month of use thoughts and some mods!

  • After almost five weeks of use, I have made some mods to make this unit safer and more pleasant to live with. Oklahoma has been very hot all summer (100F+). This unit has been awesome while working out in the garage...should have gotten one years ago.

You just need to crack those doors. They don't need to be completely opened. Ideally, you'd place the cooler in front of a fresh air source (an open window for example), then crack a window (or door) on the opposite side of the room or building. Draw fresh air in, cool it, push air out the other side.

Snatched one of these up from Home Depot in Georgetown, TX today. All I can say is "OMG". 100 degrees and 25% humidity in the garage, this thing is blowing out 79 degrees. It feels like sitting in front of an AC. My only complaint is not purchasing a swamp cooler decades ago.
Read the manual, and let the fan run for 30 minutes without the water pump running to dry out the pads before shutting it down for the night.
    Cheers đŸ»

Def read the manual. When I got mine, I put that humidifier "Bacteriostat" chemical treatment in the water. BIG mistake...ruined the pads, killed the pump, etc. I had to clean it all out and replace the pump. I just use plain garden hose water now...no issues this summer (changed the pads out in the spring)

That white stuff is calcium. Every few months, take your pads out & spray some CLR on them. Let that CLR soak in the pad for a few. Then give them a good rinse & they should be good to go again.

Looking to order this in a sec. Looks like all reviews been pretty good and well worth the price. My buddy has the smaller version and i was surprised on how cold it blew when it was like 105 in fresno California. Other thing i can think of to keep some of the calcuim out is to get one of those rv filters and install before it enters the unit.

Couple of things that I used to “mod” mine were
    1) smart outlet plug so I can turn it on/off set timers with my phone
    2) get a nice garden hose filter for it so that you’re water going into the reservoir is clean, it’ll mitigate build up as well (also can install a cheap sediment filter on the garden hose as well)
BoogieBrew makes a filter that has like a 50k gallon capacity and it’s about 40-50 bucks
I’ve been looking into installing a new float valve because the one I have leaks by the white plastic so sadly I have to manually add water with my hose 😱

  • @geoffhubbell5942

Add a bleedoff to drain off water from the reservoir. You will get at least one more year out of the pads. I also start the season by spraying off the dirt from the pads and reservoir. Year 2 on the pads I add a gallon of vinegar and run the water pump only for four hours and rinse

    • @ChrisDIYerOklahoma

It already has a reservoir drain plug. But, a bleed-off valve might work. I just replaced the pads on mine this spring and cleaned it all out. I replaced the pump last year.

The white stuff you were talking about on your cooler is calcium deposite in your water. You can get some cleaner to mix with the water to slow or eliminate it altogether.

Can I hook up my hose to it and leave for two days? I am putting this in my garage with the back door open and adjacent window open for air flow. I was just concerned about it hooking my hose up to it and leaving for two days. I am leaving our dog at the house and want him to cool while we are gone, we live in Central Texas. Leaving the hose connected and on would be okay? Additionally, I am guessing just barley turn on the water vs full or medium blast.

    • @ChrisDIYerOklahoma
      @ChrisDIYerOklahoma  Pƙed 15 dny

I run mine 24/7 in my garage on medium, hose connected. No issues. Ventilation (outside air and venting) is a must. Without venting, it is like walking down the street in Lake Charles, Louisiana in the summertime (wearable humidity/heat) --this unit will just pump moist air continuously and do nothing.

In GA outside it’s about 60-75% humidity maybe up to 80 Earle morning & evenings later in the summer, but I only need it from 11-7pm when it gets uncomfortably warm for my cat on my screened in porch. Normal fans just blow hot air and this seems to be one of the better units with more reviews. I’ve been looking for a couple days so I don’t really know. Some people say in reviews adding like icy cold water out the fridge & add some ice or ice packs can make a difference as well but when the water warms up, it doesn’t cool as efficiently. So I was thinking/wondering if it runs out every 3/4 hrs anyway, with some ice packs instead of ice water if that would keep the air coming out about 10-15-20* cooler. I just need to make sure my cat doesn’t have a heat stroke. Even in unbearable heat, he won’t just chill out and sit inside unless it’s raining or storming. He just cried and scratches at the door. I also bought a cooling pad and I can’t tell if it works or not. The porch is only in direct sun early morning & by 11-12 the sun is off the porch so he’s not in direct sunlight majority of the day. I keep him shaved and change his water out 2-3 times a day or more if I’m home all day. I read about freezing some low sodium chicken broken & giving him a cube of one every few hours during the day as well to help keep him cool. I also add cold water to his food to make sure he’s getting enough water in him, hopefully. I was wondering if this is worth the money, because if it is I will get it. I know it’s not an AC I only expect it to blow air about 10-12* cooler then the temperature outside and it be cool air and not warm air, that makes me think it would help him keep cool, but I will need it pointing toward the ground so the air goes down over his bed and his cat house to keep cool-er air moving over him.
