Hats off, my friend. Your focus on this is making the manufacturers aware of our interest in better performance and quality. You've been a leader on this. Today I was able to buy a Napa Platinum for my Chevy v8 for 8.99 which is a killer price for such a terrific filter. Happy to see that STP is getting more competitive. Prices for the good stuff will moderate if the public demands it.

Plastic helps from corrosion on the interior of the filter. Hyundai does the same thing on their factory filters.

A lot of high volume shops/quick lubes buy the stp filters in bulk. They come without boxes & get stocked on the shelves & sometimes, depending on clientele, sit for long periods of time. The plastic covering protects the raw metal from rust & the inside of the filter from dust & debris.

This exact filter fits my Subaru 3.6 engine, and have the STP XL filter on it now. When I last went to AutoZone, I noticed that some XL's have the same lipped gasket and 5 inlet holes, but some of the other XL's have the same base plate and gasket as the standard blue filter shown in this video. The OEM Subaru filter has the 5 inlet holes and gasket lip, and the STP is the only aftermarket filter I can find that looks identical, but I'm not sure if they're phasing out the 5 inlet holes for the 2808 filter in favor of the 8, or if they have more than one design for the same filter. I've also noticed the M1-104 filters (same application) have varying gaskets and base plates from one filter to the next.

That percentage depends on the particle size. Filters give a number based on the micron size they tested. That 99% might be on a bigger micron size. It maybe catching more bigger particles, but its letting through more smaller ones.

However, I bought about 6 on sale BOSCH LONG DISTANCE PLUS filters for just $5 normally $15 at Wally world. Using Super Tech 5W 30 synthetic at 6000 miles I changed the oil and filter. Mistake?? Maybe. Why? The oil was still very clear and honey colored. I think I could have gone another 3 to 5 thousand miles. This was not normal. Most of the 6000 miles were highway but that BOSCH filter Distance Plus is the best! Heavy filter. Lots of media inside. If you do not mind paying more get this filter! Cheers!

If so, I believe that's why it's shown in testing that Mobil 1 had much slower flow. My thoughts on a good filter mainly focus on media, surface area, construction and bypass. Many things that so many are concerned about like metal end caps and the structural center core are not necessary. There are plastics and other materials that work fine and stand up to heat and pressure. You expect the filter medial to hold up right? Its not Metal either! Metal is fine but definitely not a necessity. As far as the end caps your metal is probably not the best material and harder to seal and has less adhesion, especially the slick shiny ones that you like. Essentially it depends on the adhesive quality.

  • @Jay_Dahl
    @Jay_Dahl Před 5 lety +12

Tearing those oil filters apart to figure out which one best removes harmful particles from the engine oil looks like a lot of fun, but I think you're trying to solve that oil particle contamination problem the wrong way. Instead of figuring out which oil filter does the best job, it would be best to focus on what can be done to reduce the number of particles that get into the oil. Most of those abrasive particles are simple dirt and dust that sneaks in through the air intake. If you really want clean oil, use a good AIR filter and seal up any vacuum leaks, even the tiny ones (i.e., those old seals on the dipsticks of foreign cars. The crankcase vacuum on some of the German cars is so strong I've heard you can take out the oil drain plug while the engine is running, and it won't leak oil.) And, to minimize any soot/carbon contamination in the oil, make sure your engine is not running rich. Do whatever it takes to get the fuel trims close to zero - new plugs, fuel injectors, or whatever it needs.

Ever think about the fact that you should be putting perfectly clean oil into your engine and hopefully your engine is not disintergrating. ...now IF you engine DOES begin to disintegrate shedding metal fragments? Is better oil filtration REALLY going to save anyone? LOL I sincerely DOUBT that! My phiosphy is to change the filter EVERY oil change and to change oil earlier not later .....therefore I use lower tier oil and filter so long as they meet OEM standards. SOME guys apparently love to buy supposedly ultra premium oil and filters paying a lot of extra money and then their philosphy is to run 10,000 miles etc between oil changes...I do NOT trust that these premium oils and filters are truly so much better....so I just use more economical and then change at 5k miles.....Personally I feel like I am treating my cars better than the dudes running the expensive components longer

Whether or not a filter has a bypass valve is determined by the application. If a particular Application does not call for a bypass valve it may not have one but it may have one of the same filter is used in another application that requires it. Again the bypass valve inclusion is vehicle specific although can be present even though not needed.

5,000 miles is (probably) the limit with the XL if you use conventional oil, because the controlling "longevity factor" isn't the durability of the filter material, but the length of time before the filter loads up with sludge and sludge like byproducts - and conventional oil breaks down a lot more and a lot faster than full synthetic.
On the other hand, if you use full synthetic with the base 5,000 filter you are still stuck with the 5,000 mile limit, because it's not the dirt from oil breakdown that uses up the filter, it's the flow of the oil itself breaking down the fibers.
And then of course you've gotta follow your owner's manual on oil change intervals if you still have the bumper to bumper or power train warranties still in effect.
I don't even trust 7,500 or 10,000 owner's manual oil change intervals. First, there are big loopholes that kick a lot of drivers down into the "severe service" oil change interval; second I think the modern long intervals give priority to conserving resources not to engine protection; and third I think most car makers assume the average engine life only has to be 100,000 miles - for the first owner.

Hmm, so if you failed to noticed that your Gasket is stuck to the block means you have no business working on a vehicle, because you should always wipe down the surface before installing the new filter, which means there is no way you're not going to notice the gasket. Actually, you should have noticed it missing from the old filter after you removed it.

I dont know why I'm barely watching this video but I was really impressed by your presentation. I have dissected an STP Maximum Life S2808ML as well when they barely came out and they were built differently than these newer ones. I like the Purolator Boss for a number of reasons but recently, I have noticed that the louver type of holes on the center tube have not been manufactured correctly and they are barely open, meaning the oil will not flow as efficiently and the oil pressure will increase leading the oil to by pass unfiltered oil, which is a serious problem. This is rather disappointing to me because the Purolator Boss is perfect in my opinion, but it is those poorly manufactured louvers that have me embittered. I may consider this my new favorite filter until Purolator addresses their issues with the center tubes across all their lineup from the Classic, One, and Boss. With these STP oil filters, the center tubes have wide open holes which I like for a guaranteed oil flow without restrictions. I only buy the top tier oil filters and pair it with full synthetic oil. Excellent video.

Go with Royal Purple full synthetic oil filters. Amazon sells them for around $15.00. It’s only a couple of times a year you change the oil and filter so go with quality.

I like how in depth you get with your reviews.
However, I noticed that this video is dramatically lower in video quality(360p). Your videos are usually 1440p60.
    What happened?
I always liked how high in video quality your reviews were, along with how thorough they have been.
    Keep up the excellent work!

For after market filters, It all boils down to you get what you pay for!!! If you pay $15.00 for a filter your getting the best constructed and performing filter on the market. If you pay $3.00 your getting something that meets minimum standards. If you buy an OEM filter, your probably getting a half decent filter. Seeing as quite a few brand new cars are leased these days, that means the the car companies own the car, so its in their financial interest to use a half decent filter. I buy used cars and use OEM or Purolator BOSS

I run 5 to 7500 miles on Fram and never a problem. I change my oil when my oil is 1/2 quart low or 7,500 miles on my trailblazer with 144,000 miles' with synthetic oil it was 1/2 quart low one time at 7,500... Did go to 10,000 once at 3/4 quart low, so I change at 6 to 7 k most of the time. Driving has a lot to do with it too. I never go more than 200 miles at one time ' so don't travel long distance much //

Plastic cover? If it's boxed there will be no debris. 99% of people wipe oil on the gasket anyway. Simple marketing BS by STP. The 8 holes vs. 5 holes is even more BS. With the 8 smaller holes you get the same flow as the larger 5 holes. However using 5 larger holes, the computer on your vehicle will register lower oil PSI, tripping a CEL, therefore making you go in for an oil change much sooner, and more frequently than needed. This adds up to millions for STP.

Car batteries, tires, and anything else we always inquire about the country of origin. We'll buy made in Mexico when USA , Japan, Germany are not on the list of country of origin options. Especially when WIX is made in USA and surprisingly the basic microgard is also made in USA.
