Building alpine Bushcraft Shelter | Survival materials, shingle roof, stone wall [Pt. 1]

  • Rocks and deadwood are basically all that is needed to build a protective shelter in the wild. I found this rubble on a mountain, which provided the suitable material for the walls. The whole construction is free of synthetic material. The nails and dowels are also made of wood. The roof is mostly waterproof, altough the shingles are a bit twisted due to a light vortex grwoth of the tree I used to split them. It will take a few months until they flat out by their own, due to the interaction of rain, drying, the weight of the rocks and the mass of snow on top. In the 2nd part I will finish the interior and the stove. Please leave a comment for suggestions and wishes. Have fun watching!

I did have fun watching your rare combination of skills and vision. Thank you for sharing this. I suppose some people will think your attention to detail and to beauty are excessive, but that seems to me to be the point. The mere existence of this beautiful dwelling place will stay with me when I most need that comfort. Although I am an old woman (in years, anyway), I find myself thinking I should remember the construction details so I can build my own. A good laugh for me.

I’ve built a couple primitive shelters by myself, primarily from pine and took me @ a month on each using the basic saw, axe, shovel and mallet This build is however over the top, definitely not for a beginner.

Hello, well this shelter is not for long term use, I have to throw it down within a coulpe of years. But at least I can reuse the shingles for further projects. I chose this place especially because of the large availability of building material and a certain amount of protection from noises down the valley, which is very important for filming

Building on a talus slope certainly has the advantage of availability of rock, but the reason that rock is there is because something unstable is uphill from it. An avalanche or earthquake could bring more down on you.
I love the craftsmanship and the froe. My brother made a froe about 50 years ago to replace some of the shakes on the log cabin we spent our summers in as children. I am more partial to a saddle corner where only the bottom sides of logs are notched with a curved notch. Notches on the top surface collect moisture and speed decay.
