    finally, someone who hasn't stretched teh frame enough to put a conventional body on. great looking rig. looks like the one i bought in 1983. takes me back, lol. if you are planning to sleep in the truck and use it for work you will be removing the flappers if you want to sleep. I took them off mine and put turnouts on it. slept like a baby. LOL, I'd go home after a month or more out and have to sleep in the truck. it was just way too quiet in the house without the engine running. haha. Great times. I was young and single and hauled cross country with it.

  • @drive42
    @drive42 Před 4 lety

    I have only put fenders on air ride trucks, so I would dump the air and lay a 2X4 flat across the tires and use the boards as spacers. When you air up the suspension you will have good clearance. On a springer I suppose you would measure the distance from the suspension stop to the axle, add an inch or so, and space the fender accordingly. Since you want a new 5th wheel, get a riser spacer to go between the fame and the 5th wheel. Your new shiny fenders will thank you. On the bumper bolts I would polish the stainless steel bolts and never worry about them rusting. The bolt/nut covers are moisture catchers and rust generators. Best of luck to you on this build!

    I’m glad someone is restoring the older cabovers! After driving one for over 30 years it does my heart good to see that nice looking Transtar going back on the road ! I would think twice before putting super-singles on your steering axle , the cost really sucks and they don’t hold up over time ! If you want the tires out a bit use spacers ! You need another trumpet on the pass side ! Just cut the king pin latch rod shorter and use an old inner tube and make a gasket for behind that beautiful chrome bumper so it won’t rust ! These are things I’ve done to all the trucks I had ! The very first international I drove was a 1971 w/ a 36” bunk a 290 Cummins w/ 10 speed roadranger and 370 gears no air ride or power steering ! Lol. What ya hauling with the old girl ?
