Craig, really enjoyed your concise realistic review of the match and where we are at, heading into the last quarter of the season. We are really struggling in midfield and felt for Bruno given the as said limited input/output from Joe W & Shaun L. Can but hope Eddie and the squad come back from the break refreshed in mind and body to attack and go for max points, through to the end of the season. Regardless, Eddie and his coaches deserve a supported run into the 24/25 season, subject to the Physio/Medical team needing a full review/overhaul!

There’s ways to lose a game especially a quarter final and that wasn’t it. Barely laid a glove on Man City and looked like a national league side who had drew them in the 3rd round for the majority.
For me Howe deserves until Christmas but surely he must be getting worried with what he’s seeing? I haven’t seen a proper Eddie Howe Newcastle performance since Man U at home 4 months ago and despite players getting more rest and having more players available we’re seriously lacking any desire, fight, grit, intensity - basically everything we did have last season.
Unless Tino and Trippier are back Lewis Hall HAS to start the next game. Longstaff needs to come out as well ASAP it’s got to the point where a traffic cone would be more effective.

Hope he can turn it around, but the signs are not good, the owners have big plans, and will make allowances for the odd step back such as this season, knowing full well Eddie probably over achieved last season, but their definition of a step back is probably a 5th or 6th finish or win the FA or League Cup, not finish 11th or 12th, with all the signs that the same thing could happen next season. I think they should persevere and support Eddie Howe, but a poor start to next season and I think they would act.

Craig, on Eddie Howe I just think fans can be far too reactionary at times and like you say it seems that’s more on social media than in the ground or in the pub. I obviously like these players and really appreciate them for what they’ve done for the club (mainly last season) but some of them just aren’t good enough to consistently achieve what we did last year by going on several winning runs and it was going to catch up with then eventually, and it makes it even harder for them when a few are playing injured. Don’t really want to name names but how people think another manager can get that out of the likes of some of these is bizarre to me and although criticism is valid at times for Eddie’s team selections and occasionally tactics for certain games there’s far bigger issues and I just really hope ffp let’s us do something to fix them problems in the summer but we’ll have to use the money well as well. Feels like I’ve wrote loads there😂 Great video again from you👍🤝

At times I think those who shout the loudest have poor memories and forget that it’s FFP that stopped us from at least starting off a season with a strong 20 man squad never mind 15 the latter of which was badly affected by constant injuries and a suspension and we have to select from that very weakened 15 and even play injured players. I see a few players leaving the club in the summer and a few going down the ‘picking’ order.

    • @stephennutkin2477
      @stephennutkin2477 Před 2 měsíci

Eddie could have started the game without Longstaff , Burn & Botman but the facts are that those players would have still been on the bench which highlights how weak is our squad. There will be a few players being moved out in the summer and a few going down the ‘picking’ order . We started the season with a decent 15 man squad but with only one out and out good striker who is obviously more out than in , did well in the champions league but injuries hit the squad and reduced us to what we have now. If we hit the very safe points total with 50% of our games left I see Botman going for an op sooner than later.

The problem ive noticed in a few games is Newcastle dont stop problems at source. They back peddle when teams are attacking instead of stopping the player. Its like its drilled into them to not tackle or commit a foul. It also appears that they have been told not to shoot on sight. They try to walk it in rather than just taking a shot. Man City proved that if you buy a ticket you could win the lotto. They got into positions to shoot and they shot and scored deflected goals. Thats how games are won. I do get the feeling Howe was insulted by comments last season about Newcastle being timewasters or students of the dark arts. This season certainly beyond December that level of commitment is missing. The fact Pope, Trippier and Joelinton are missing is key but the whole team seem to be standing off the opposition. Its why we are leaking so many goals. They need to get back to closing down, breaking up play and putting out fires.

The rest of the season will be an uphill task mentally for the lads but keep trying to secure some kind of European slot and then they just need to keep eyes fixed on the horizon for what next season will bring - hopefully improved transfers and some better overdue luck with things like home draws for the cups, etc. 👍

For me Craig we should of played 5 in midfield not at the back as your still allowing Man City to come at us from the middle. You have to cut off the supply at the source not in the last 3rd. Saying that like you said its Man City so didn't expect a lot else TBH. Considering everyone of our FA cup ties have been away from home it was only a matter of time before we got knocked out and tonight was that night. We now focus on our remaining games and finish as high as we can. EH is still the man for me and name me a manager who would of coped any better with all the players we have had out this season ?

In fairness to Howe Tonali was brought in to give us that extra control in midfield, keep possession, and maybe we could have reduced the intensity. His ban has been way more significant than people realise. The season was over the minute he got banned.

No shame in getting beat off Man City, but I fear the current team will continue to struggle against lesser teams than City. Need to ship 5 or 6 of the current squad out in the summer, and replace with younger, fitter (and by that I mean less injury prone ) and better. Well balanced report as ever Craig. I had an exchange of messages with a life long City fan, and he is also a retired very good amateur footballer so he knows what he’s talking about. My gripe is the whingers who because of the success last year expect massive progress this year, probably newbie Toon fans with very little grounding in reality🤔😂 He recalls City in the old 3rd division and the takeover and slow build, success wasn’t immediate. Yes City are now a class above us, but we lost to 2 deflections, both as outrageous as each other but for different reasons. They dominated us but didn’t blast us off the park. 2023/24 has been generally poor but with some outstandingly good games. We are 10th in the League with a good opportunity to scrape into Europe. Other than last year when could we aspire to that - Pardew rings a bell. We need to continue to build, we already have a £60 mn Italian to start in August, Lewis Hall had a decent cameo, Tino is top class and there are others. We will need a clear out of some underperforming & perennially injured players and subject to Eddie staying we should do well again. 🤞

We are getting worse by the game and the damage we are doing to our confidence is a real concern. One thing Craig Hope keeps going on about is players not being 100% fit and carrying knocks, sorry but no player at any club is playing at 100% this time of the season. It’s about finding away and we don’t do that so stop blaming injuries, it’s simple we are not good enough and we have to accept that, we can’t keep using injuries as an excuse. Finishing higher in the league because of playing once per week will earn us more money than can be gained from a full Europa Conference League campaign. Revenue is very important. The result was no surprise at all in fairness.
I have no wishes for Howe to be under pressure or to get the sack, his work ethic, professionalism, coaching is brilliant.
But he has to be braver with some of his decisions now.
He is trusting his loyal players, who he likes as people a bit too much.
We néed to treat now until the end of the season as a free hit, go at it with something different and with a freedom. See how it ends up.
But we really do need to let players like longstaff, burn, willock botman, have some time away from the starting line up for the good of their fitness levels.
Trust in the likes of lewis Hall, miley, Anderson, white to do a job and I'm sure they will. We need to utilise the squad now and just mix things up towards the end of the season. We are way too predictable and have nowhere near enough quality to kill teams off at the moment with the set up of tactics and players.
Ovbiously Joelinton is the biggest miss from this team, he brings literally everything you could want in a midfielder for this newcastle team.
One of the big issues arising is the fact that Bruno is more likely to get twitchy feet with how things are going at the moment, and where will we be without Bruno. It'll be a huge step backwards to lose a player of his quality. We need to hope we can offer him some insight into next season with some good investment this summer to improve everything around him. Otherwise I'm afraid he's off to Barcelona.
Need to see a reaction now from this group to show they are still willing to work for this manager. And a reaction from howe to change up his current system and approach.

Time to reflect and a load of things to say.
Firstly thanks for this Craig. Honest as ever and I do go along with a lot of it.
Following the 4 FA cup games this weekend, it’s so disappointing to be the only team that never lay a glove on the opposition. Does feel like we waved the white flag before a ball was kicked !!
Liked a change in formation to try and stop them. But sat too deep and yes 2 lucky goals but game was done once the 2nd went it. Never looked like we could get back into it and although we stepped up 2nd half, was it us or city just back into canter mode.
Agree Longy and botman need to come out. But don’t buy the Longy injury since Everton last season. It’s never been mentioned before.
Disagree with Eddie for not being able to change, Anderson, hall and Miley all did well so there are options.
Bruno I know you have 3 stars to, but I’m just not convinced overall with him. Is it because he has no help in the middle, but I see a few great balls, but the lack of pace and the amount of times he is caught on the ball is too much.
Is it because he is playing deeper and is true game is forward more ?? Even pep called him a good defensive midfielder !!
I’m pondering selling for £100m if Tonali does that job well. Bear in mind FFP anyway and we can get in 2 players instead.
I’m not a Howe out fan, but depends where we finish, how we play and what games we win.
One thing I do know is you can’t have 1-2 shots on target each game and expect to win. That has been in a lot of games.

Sadly managers can't dine out on past conquests forever (Ranieri won the league & got the bullet) huge improvements needed for the run in, or Eddie could be replaced with a higher calibre manager before the start of next season. I want him to succeed, but he's gotta stop bringing these problems on himself, be brave & innovative again like he was at the start of his tenure.

This post match review felt like such a contradiction. Talked about the result being a foregone conclusion, players in the team when not fit, lack of quality etc… but in the same breath saying the manager is doing great. If this was antics the tone would be totally different. We have been playing the same mediocre, lacklustre football since December and there has been no question from the media at all. Man City didn’t even have to try yet we did well because we changed shape and gave ourselves less problems than in previous games. Howe’s “credit” has gone and is already in his overdraft. He has a plan an and that’s it and it’s failed this year because every team has found us out (apart from Villa).

Crazy comment. He'd waste millions on average British players. We'd gradually get even worse

Look at the difference in salaries between the 2 teams, for starters Haarland and KDB are the 2 top earners in the EPL, that's not looking at the rest of the Man C team who are almost all in the top 30. We have 1 in the top 50. Howe is an amateur compared to Pepe no matter how Craig kisses his ass. The EPL is now all about FFP, if we had the opportunities under the rules Man C had to buy their team we would be up there with them.

Agree with every word you say 😉 With our best 11 (Tripps, Big Joe etc.) we can compete with City… but it’s just compete, they are the best team on the planet. We need a squad as good as our best 11 to be a top 4 side and even then, we’d be below City. They are best side in world with best manager. Good news is that hopefully as Eddie builds squad (and HE should) Pep will call time, Klopp is gone, and Eddie can imo win leagues & cups against the rest over next 5+ years. You may think I’m dreaming but up til Man U this season he showed how it can be… we have a team at mo (not just squad) packed with Ashley era players (Longy, Dubs, Murphy, Miggy etc.) and FFP means rotation and improvement will take a few windows.

Lewis Hall looked promising, Longstaff, Almiron,Dummet,Burn, Gillespie, Hendrick, Fraser,Lewis, Ritchie, Lascelles need gone for Newcastle to get to the next level

How come nobody mention Hall and what he did when he came on. He closed the leftside the moment he came on and did a far better job than "I desperatley want to be an attacking player/run out of position" Burn.

I think we need a striker. Isak seems to look better just off the left rather than being isolated up front. I can't believe that we spent so much money on Barnes and Livramento, who are essentially backup players.

Ive been very critical of Howe recently but i thought the team set up and tactics were good tonight ... Could see what he was trying to achieve with keeping it tight and hit them with pace up top in gordon and isak. Unfortunately individual errors cost us. Im a big fan of longstaff and burn but both need a rest ... Hall miley and Anderson looked decent when they came on... I think the last ten games its time to rotate the team snd give them a chance i also think lascelles clearly deserves his chance i love botman but hes not right

Man City simply don’t have a weakness. They have world class players in almost every position, in a squad built up over many years without FFP constraints. I agree that we were a bit disappointing last night but a lot of teams will come away from City having done worse. HWTL.

Agree with most of that Craig .
But thought Murphy was very disciplined and had a decent game.
We had kids and aging players on the bench and they had 50 million pound players .
Willocks job was to protect BDB on that side of the pitch, problem is Willock is not disciplined to do that role and it cost us twice even if they were both lucky goals via deflection .
Twitter has a lot of loons and is not a true reflection of our fan base .
Keep up the grear work Craig .
Ps i think its a compliment if Pep thinks we played a different game .

At the end of the season my guess is that we are more likely to be rueing points dropped against the likes of Luton, Bournemouth and Forest than losing 2-0 away to the best team in the league.

Craig, with this new bill that is coming in, does that mean that the so called top six are even further away from us and other clubs that are around us?

Can't disagree with anything in that account, lets hope Eddie rings the changes for the next two important home games... definitely Anderson in for Longstaff and Botman isnt firing on last seasons cylinders... and etc et al. Might have been a different game with Tonali and JoeL on the pitch, but there is a technical gulf between us and ManCity and perhaps if we had somehow managed to get level they would just have scored again. Anyway - Onward.
