  • Mallikarjun Bheemarayappa Mansur was an Indian classical singer of the khyal style hailing from the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana or School of Hindustani classical music. Mansur was born on December 31, 1911, at Mansur, a village five km. west of Dharwad, Karnataka. His father, Bheemaraayappa was village headman,a farmer by occupation was an ardent lover and patron of music. He had four brothers and three sisters. His elder brother Baswaraj owned a theatre troupe, thus at age nine Mansur did a small role acted in play. Spotting the talent in his son, Mallikarjun's father engaged him to a traveling Yakshagana (Kannada theatre) troupe. The owner of this troupe took a liking to the tender and melodious voice of Mallikarjun and encouraged him to sing different types of compositions during the drama-performances. Hearing one such performance, he was picked up by Pundit Appaya Swamy under whom he had his initial training in Carnatic music. Sometime later, he was introduced to classical Hindustani music under Nilkanth Bua Alurmath of Miraj who belonged to the Gwalior Gharana. The latter brought him to Ustad Alladiya Khan, the stalwart and the then patriarch of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, in the late 1920s, who referred him to his elder son, Ustad Manji Khan. Following Manji Khan's untimely death, he came under the tutelage of Ustad Bhurji Khan, the younger son of Ustad Alladiya Khan. This grooming under the Khan Brothers had the most important influence on his singing. Mansur was well known for his command over a large number of rare (aprachalit) ragas such as Shuddh Nat, Asa Jogiya, Hem Nat, Lachchhasakh, Khat etc, as well as his constant, mercurial improvisations in both melody and metre without ever losing the emotional content of the song. Initially, his voice and style resembled that of Manji Khan and Narayanrao Vyas, but gradually he developed his own style of rendition. He also remained music director with His Master's Voice (HMV) and later music advisor to All India Radio's Dharwad station.
This compilation has three beautiful renditions of Raga Khat, Raga Yaman Kalyan and Raga Nat Bihag by the maestro. The perfectionist that he was these tracks are a delight for any Hindusthani Classical Music enthusiast.

He emotionally fulfills us. That is his greatest quality and a hallmark of a great performer. I see no parallel to him in whosoever I have listened to. We cannot listen to his gurus. But I am sure they would have been extremely happy at the performance of his pupil. You listen to his one rendition, and you feel your day has been made. But you long for more for his soulful voice.

Great performance of his perfect control over his voice. It may be because of God's grace and Guruji Aashirvad plus his devoted hard practice. Divinely soulful.

An interview with ANILAH brought me here...im entering a whole new area of sound exploration... Psychoaccoustics and bioenergy breathing.. Thank you all for this! This sounds really interesting, i was always a big fan of vocal improvisation and the power of repetitive chants. Amazing stuff. We know so little yet about ourselves and the physical world...

Strongly endorse Vikas Bedi and Shrishti Narayan Jha. His genius remains under appreciated. His love for music, and the energy you could feel in it till his last breath, is amazing. He lived and breathed nothing else. He deserves to be there with the greatest.

If NaadBrahma permits and pardons me for saying this that Raagas wait for opportunity when Mansurji decides to sing them. He is perfect medium for pure representation of Raagas and they may be feeling joy of highest kind when Mansurji sings.

When I see dislike on videos like this my imotikons r mixed. Angry as well as pity. Angry cause if u don’t know anything about classical music then just keep quiet and pity cause don’t know what u r missing. I am quoting something from writings of P L Deshpande. JAGAAT KUMBHAR THODE GHADHAVE FAR. It means in this world there r few who can make earthen pots and most r donkeys who r useful just to get soil to pot maker. Those 19 who disliked r donkeys.
