- San Francisco Rush Alcatraz Edition Arcade Restoration
I recently picked up one of my absolute favorite arcade racing cabinets ever, San Francisco Rush The Rock Alcatraz Edition. Purchased this machine locally from a seller who said it had been sitting in a storage for almost a decade, and did not think it was in working condition. So I decided to see if I could bring it back to life!

Im utterly in love. There's a Rush cab near me that im desperately trying to work out a deal for. Im praying and crossing my fingers. This build gives me all kinds of hope...
Best of luck, hope you can snag it 👍
I think the green LED strip underneath was a great choice! I do think it'd look better if it went all the way around but it still looks cool 😁
Either way the Rush games take me back, classic arcade driving action!
That’s an awesome driving cab!
I'm bias obviously but it's one of the better arcade racing games in my opinion
Great work, I loved hearing about the details of the cabinet. They had this inside my local Super K-Mart with Police Trainer, War Final Assault, Time Crisis 2, NFL Blitz, and Medieval Madness, it was my favorite era of arcades.
That’s an amazing lineup at Kmart!
As much as I love arcade racing games I never played this one. Looks great!
Man what a lucky break you were able to get this at that price and then get it working. I’m critical of the lcd screen honestly but it’s your machine and like Brad Goodman told the people of Soringfield Be Like The Boy and do what makes you feel good. It’s just most of the original arcades here were trashed and had lcds and pandoras boxes put in them and sold as multicades so I have arcade ptsd
A+ for the Brad Goodman reference!
That game is my childhood I'm an early 2000s kid but I like playing older games of the '90s and I grew up playing both San Francisco Rush extreme racing and the Alcatraz edition and as an adult I miss playing both those games and I would play them again someday
Nicely Done and yes one of my favorite Racing Games! Hope you can find a #2 soon
fingers crossed, I'm sure the wife will have a meltdown when she sees me bring home a second cabinet of the same game lol
Just catching up from the holidays. Doug, I'm really glad you're getting deeper into this hobby. It's been fun watching you restore these cabs. Hoping you're still doing the "We grew up better" show, but I understand if that doesn't fit in with family stuff. Happy New Year to you bud!
Such a cool project and restoration as well......I recently got a pair of Crusin USA sit down machines that were both missing seats and had bad CRTs from a guy that had a huge warehouse of arcade machines and parts he was getting rid of and let me have for a ridiculous low price for the pair....my original plans were to try to gut both machines and just use the shells into a pair of PC powered Multicade machines but this video inspired me to try to restore them to their former glory. Awesome content and thanks for all the work that went into this and sharing it with us!
Good luck on your resto projects, it will be awesome to see if you can get both machines up and running again side by side!
Fantastic job on the rebuild love the design choices and the T Molding.
Thank you very much!
My favorite arcade cab of all time!! Congrats on the restore, looks like you did an excellent job Doug.
Many thanks!
Omg I played those games at a arcade then came home 🏡 and play the same game on my N64 those were good times
Great find, $200 is an absolute steal 👍👍. Rush is a fun game but it's no Outrun 😁😁. Merry Christmas to all at Cooltoy HQ, thanks for all the enjoyable content 👍👍.
Merry Christmas Rob!
One of my favorites. The jumps in the game are incredibly fun and also the traction. Nicely done. I can understand the temptation to get two. I might have to head over if that happens.
I love the over the top jumps and physics of this game. I have more fun with this style of racing game over a true simulation racer
@@cooltoy Completely agree
I think I played that at FunPlex in the 90s. Great work bro.
These machines were an arcade staple in the 90s. It was rare to not see at least one in the arcade back then
Agree with another commenter on here…you’re the GOAT when it comes to arcade restorations. I wish I lived near you so I could purchase some of these. Absolutely amazing Doug, great job.
very much appreciated!
CoolToy,
So glad you got a Rush cab :) My favorite Rush game is 2042, but the crazy thing is, I've never played "The Rock" version of the game. I did see a Rock cab now and then and always regret not playing it in the wild. Great find and restore!
vgv
Rush 2049 is an awesome game as well, big fan of that one too!
I just got a Sega Outrunners arcade game that looks in similar shape. Been cleaning it a LOT. Next step for me is to recap the CRT screens (I have never done it before, so wish me luck) to try to get them working. If I can get mine even close to what you have done I will be happy. Thanks for sharring. It is great insperation.
Good luck!
Thanks @@cooltoy
Rush is my fav driving game. But I can’t believe you would do something to make yourself happy. How dare you.
I know right! Something needs to be done about this Cooltoy fella, he's getting out of line.
The best arcade arcade i hope to get a machine one day
it's such much fun to play this game and launch your car over some of the jumps and find the secret routes on each course!
@@cooltoy yup it was one of the first arcade racers to have short cuts
You're my hero! Every project you make is fantastic!
thank you so much!
How cool, man! Congratulations on the acquisition and the work, it turned out great. Look for a 4:3 CRT HDTV and replace the monitor again, it might be worth it. I have a generic case running with a MAME emulator at 480p and it looks great if connected to a video card but horrible when connected directly to the pc's motherboard. In your case, connecting directly to the original board I don't know how it would look, but I think it's worth a try.
Great job, Looks amazing!
Okay, It's official for me have to finally announce this one.. DOUG is official GOATED status.
Congrats 👏 but b4 I go I also wanted to say [RUSH!]
It's so hard not to walk around the house and repeatedly say RUSH RUSH RUSH RUSH all the time
Nice job. This looks really good.
Thanks Quentin!
SF RUSH arcade is one of my favorite series. Especially this arcade cab! To be honest, you did such an amazing job on this. And who cares if some stuff is changed. If i bought it after you fixed it up like this, I would die a happy man, lol. Great job, dude, especially with all the cool upgrades!
thank you for the kind words man!
@cooltoy my words are honest words and you're such an awesome dude!
You have been knocking projects out left and right lately!.. Hope you and the family have a great Christmas!
Thanks, you too!
So cool!! Great restoration. Had a couple in my garage once upon a time. Auction finds that I fixed up.i remember finding some fans that clipped perfectly to the oh crap handles to make the warmer days more tolerable in the garage
That's a handy solution for those hot days!
Awesome work!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful Restoration ❤
Thank you Adam!
@@cooltoy ❤️
Excellent restoration 🔥
Thank you very much!
So awesome, great job mate
Thank you!
Awesome 👍👍
This was Amazing!
thanks George!
Excellent vid and restoration as always Doug! The only thing I disliked about this machine back in the 90's was it didn't come with the cool numeric keypad that San Francisco Rush 2049 did. I loved being able to keep track of my stats and unlock new cars. It was more of a gimmick but made me feel special as a player. Merry Christmas to you and your family my friend. Cheers! :)
2049 definitely had some cool features and improvements over the original
though i strongly don't like lcd screens in crt games I do understand why you would put one in. it definitely looks brighter and more vibrant depending on what the monitor in it looked like before and they are way more reliable. but crts are something that cant be easily replicated and hold such a nostalgic and classic feeling. it definitely depends on what your personal opinion is though, 100% agree on that.
definitely pros and cons for both CRT and LCD screens, I totally get the nostalgia and allure of CRTs and for some I realize they are a must, others no so much. Whatever makes a person happy and gets them playing these classic games still is a win in my book.
I love it God I wish Arcade1up would make games like this I would easy pay 1K for one
How many crawly beasties were living in it when you brought it home?!
I’ve got a serious spider phobia, I’d be getting my mother-in-law to clean this cabinet 😂
None that were alive, all I found inside were dead spiders and loads of mouse poop. But nothing living thank goodness.
Technically I don't have a Rock - I modded my standard Rush to run off a PCMCIA card and bought a Rock ROM kit for it. It's still one of my favorite games of all time...
Great restoration/revision. Just curious, but do you use a scanline generator with that LCD or no? Enjoy your machine!
Not using a scan line generator on this one
💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 keep it up
Ha' Daytona fer me as well' I know I can only have one full race sim and for now my top hunt is Crusin' Blast
Excellent game
I always found this game hard as hell and I play all the racing games. I can rarely get 1st place on regular difficulty. Unless I use the shortcuts and sometimes it can ruin the whole race if you mess up. One mistake and you are done lol.
Yep the difficulty curve on this one is rough is you’re looking to finish 1st place. Like you said, you have to have a flawless race to even stand a chance
hello, great video, i´m currently restoring my rush that was 20 years on the garage, power suply after i connected today dont work anymore, and the crt boar just made some smoke and had to disconnect the power to the CRT. Does your total video is filmed with the LCD running ?
Awesome collection will these survive in your garage? Does it not get cold in the winter?
My garage is climate controlled
May I ask why you chose an LCD over a new CRT? I think it's fine that you do what makes you happy. I'm just curious what was your reasoning. Is it hard finding replacement CRTs these days?
Incredible job! That’s like 3 restorations in less than 60 days- where do you find the time…LOL
I don’t sleep a lot 😆
Nice I actually got a steal on one but it was the nascar one for $100 and guy brought it to me took out everything put a Xbox and a racing build on it have a g29 on it with full speaker and change the theme to need for speed heat
I thought I was originally going to have to do something like that to this machine, but thankfully it still had signs of life.
@@cooltoy yea it was easy I wanted to change it to multiple games but can't beat the OG...only thing I had to change was the neck on the steering wheel had to 3d print to extend it
Yo cool toy I just found a San Francisco Rush the rock for 675. It works but the aesthetics are a little rough in some places. The steering wheel is there, but is missing the chrome metal piece in the middle. Do you know where I can find a wheel for it.. does the guy who scrapped out the chair for you have the steering wheel still?
The one I found is also 1 piece
there are a few on eBay: bit.ly/3VXzusF
How does he has the time to restore then give to someone??
It’s called being a good friend, you make time for those who matter
No offense but you’re trying to copy other people a little too hard. Just be you, don’t force doing content to be like others. I like you but this content from you just feels disingenuous.
😆 I’m trying to copy people by collecting games I grew up loving as a kid? What an interestingly terrible take on someone enjoying themselves.
@@cooltoy I’m not trying to upset you. I’ve been a supporter for a while. There’s just something to me that feels different from when you do a toy review or something I know you truly love. It’s just my take…. It feels like you’re trying to do something when your other content feels more like you. Does that make sense?
