  • Haze is a PS3 game in which Simon Miller and his friends go to war in the distant future of 2048 and then everyone takes doses of Nectar to make themselves feel posi'ive about it all. And that's okay. Unless it isn't. Which it isn't. Because this is Worst Games Ever. And that's okay.

That game were you could faint dead was Army Of Two. There was a system called "aggro" that, when using noisy, deadly weapons and not taking cover much you would glow red and the enemies would focus on you, in the meantime your partner using more silenced weapon and using cover would appear "see through" like ghost. You could faint death to drop the aggro.

“Lay an egg” is a fairly common idiom in the US for producing a failure or flop. It came from the vaudeville circuits during the late 1800s where it was used to reference shows or routines that didn’t get over with the audience (“we really laid an egg out there”), but it’s believed to have it’s roots in the 19th century British cricket term “duck egg” (“goose egg” in American sports) which means to end a game with a score of zero.

How weird that the game introduces a cool sci-fi concept and then keep missing obvious moments to play with that concept. The fact that ‘nectar’ puts you into an idyllic other world when you’re fighting is very fun, but its execution is incredibly odd, considering that the game implies ‘idyllic’ is simply just ‘colourful.’ Better would be a reveal that they’re not fighting in the jungle at all, but seedy dystopian streets: that the entire forest is an illusion. And the idea that you cannot see dead people is interesting, and the conversation with the dying pilot seemed to be building to him disappearing right as he speaks to the protagonist, which could even have been the catalyzing moment for the protagonist’s character growth. Instead it’s just a conversation and then he dies without pointedly disappearing: his ‘vanishing’ seems like such a small afterthought. Considering how many missed opportunities there were for something clever in this game I think it may be one of the worst the boys have played on this show.

Matt McMuscles did an episode of What Happened about Haze, most of the development issues stemmed from Free Radical’s decision to build a whole new engine for it. While there was nothing fundamentally wrong with the engine, having more flexibility freedom that they would’ve with a licensed engine led to both the studio heads and Ubisoft dictating all kinds of additional mechanics that were neat in theory but totally unnecessary (for example the “play dead” gimmick and ability to make various grenades). That forced the dev team to distract itself from working on core aspects of the game, which is why the second half of it kind of falls apart.

At anything close to the level of completion described it would be more logical IMO to finish the game and get what you can from it because the few resources you save scrapping the game would be dwarfed by what has already been invested.

I seem to remember this game being cool when I had the demo but thought it was just me not being used to the PS3 in terms of the dodgy gameplay mechanics.

I believe the game that had the feign death feature that Peter was asking about was definitely Army of Two. I remember also being at a friends house playing this game and seeing that happen, never actually owned this game

I had a few friends who went ps3 over the 360, and although that platform got really good later, you could not convince me that those early ps3 games were good. This one had so much potential though. Almost had me there.

Okay here is my issue with this game and I need to introduce another game for clarity. So one of the early games on PS3 was TimeShift which was criminally underrated imho, playing it now it's a bit meh but at the time it wasn't so bad, but I digress.
In both Haze and TimeShift you could steal an enemies gun, a mechanic I feel should be in more games. In Time Shift you controlled time so you could pause the world, run over and grab an enemy gun then restart timeand he'd be like WTF? Where's me gun? Well better surrender. They would surrender if you faced them (FPS so you'd be pointing your gun at them), now here is the thing if you killed another enemy nearby they'd have fallen and dropped their gun so the surrendering soldier would roll and pick up the dropped gun and keep fighting. It was pretty cool to see, though annoying. However if there was no gun around they would remain surrendered and you DID NOT HAVE TO KILL THEM To Advance the game/story... I capitalised coz it's important.
In Haze the ENTIRE Game is based around "War is bad, stop warring, stop killing, end the bloodshed". You could approach an enemy and steal their Primary Weapon, however they wouldnt' surrender they would just pull out theri sidearm... and YOUCANNOT STEAL IT, nor do they EVER Surrender also you HAD to kill EVERY. SINGLE. SOLIDER. to advance most areas/story.
So in TimeShift where you are just trying to fix the timeline, you could "technically" do a pacifist run (though some areas you did have to destroy stuff and might have ben kill all enemy areas, I can't remember it was 2006/7 when the game came out leave me alone dammit), but in Haze where they tell you OVER and OVER Don't Kill, it gives you NO CHOICE but to kill... it was like ARGH!!! Note: TimeShift released first so you can see why it made me angry, I'd SEEN surrendering enemies you could choose to spare then got a game telling you to not kill but leaves you no choice.
Anyway Haze was pretty bad in alot of other areas, but that was my biggest issue, the hypocrisy of the story/mechanics.
