I think Square Enix has a big management problem. That reflects on FF XIII , XIV and XV. Too much time spent on engines, graphics, mouth-twisting names but not enough time on stories. Before X, that was not a big problem.

Dua don't forget voice acting. I'm sure ff7 remake development was severely hamstrung by having limited access to the main voice cast... Especially in the US where actors are severely overpaid. Why else are we getting big main story segments with various forgettable npcs instead of continuing the main story? Moreover, the actual good ff games of the past had their scripts edited up to 2 weeks before wrapping up resulting in such crisp dialogue and narratives. I don't want voice actors hamstringing my ff games. If they get voice actors, I need them to work harder and be up for redoing scenes long into the the night up until release without asking for huge bonuses to their already inflated salaries. That's what the dev team in the old days were doing. Sakaguchi would stay up all night play testing and he left it all on the table and never planned to make a sequel. I need the current team to do that

Square Enix has been milking FF7 for years and years; spin-off, cameos, movie, remake, and now dlc. I want them to try something new, but obviously they won’t since it has failed in the past. I’m excited for FF16 and hopefully it will give the series a proper pickup from 15.

But people don't look at that or try to understand any of the finer details like that which are super important. They just hate, alienate their friends and then the game suffers more than it should. It's really trashy and frustrating.

The game still has pretty visuals even to this day. Whether people have divisive opinions about Lightning as a character, she has a very appealing and memorable design with an interesting and not overtly designed color scheme so I'm not surprised that lot of cosplayers cosplay as Lightning because she looks good from a visual standpoint.
I like some of the music and there are few tracks that stand out, but the soundtrack relies bit too much on the leitmotif of Serah's theme. And there is also a strength of presention. Whether modern Square-Enix games lack in the direction of gameplay, story and characters, I think they excel in the presentation department and the presentation is probably FFXIII's strongest suit.
I hear tons of criticism towards Vanille as a character (in some cases deservengly so), but even if she's regarded as the worst character in the game by many, to be honest she probably has the most character development out of all and if you ask me, she has the most cohesive arc since her and Fang are the only relevant characters in the story out of six protagonists.
The mythos and world building I can say is impressive on paper, but lacks in execution because, let's face it, Daisuke Watanabe wouldn't stand a morning with the writing staff of HBO shows, let alone would he be competent to write an episode of an anime. Motomu Toriyama's direction didn't help either. The story suffers from a sloppy direction towards writing and characters and relies heavily on datalogs to get a full grasp of the story. It's needlessly convoluted and jarring to follow the story. It practically disregards the basic ''show, don't tell'' rule of storytelling. FFXV's story is far from perfect, but at least that game doesn't pull its plot elements out of its ass majority of the time and had a decency to tell a simple coming of age journey to reclaim the throne story, but I do think FFXV's story was incomplete and story beats were scarce, but it has a pretty cohesive basis.
I like the stagger mechanic and get what they were going with the combat making it as fast paced as ever, but my issues stand that the combat lacks the proper player agency and tried to appeal to the larger audience with the streamlined approach. And despite its beautiful landscapes, my playthrough with it was extremely taxing because dungeons overstay their welcome with a copy-paste design. FFX was extremely linear too, but at least I felt like I was actually making a progress in reaching my goal, but with FFXIII I was begging for finally reaching the end of the dungeon because I got bored with it.
Overall, I was impressed with it's graphics and presentation, and I like the soundtrack very much, but gameplay, story and characters didn't grip me on an end run. And as for sequels, they felt unnecessary and forced to me and they dragged the narrative out because of original FFXIII's financial success in Japan.

@GIRL TALK I think FXIII-2 was a mild step in the right direction compared to XIII (better realized combat system, dialog choices, pokemon-esque mechanics, it's more open-ended), but I didn't like the cop-out ending that was shoehorned in for the sake of nickel and diming the DLC's or teasing us with the next game of the XIII series. And I wasn't the fan of alternate endings which were basically joke endings.

What 13 needs is an FF7R style game. The expanded lore, is so much deeper than the main games. Especially the novel, Episode Zero. That whole novel needed to be shown on screen because it really developed the protagonists so much better. I also feel like Lightning Returns was the kind of story the trilogy should have been on a whole. One god to overthrow, something at stake from the world being messed up, and so on. I also feel like Lumina should have been around since the beginning story to help express Lightning as a character. She's not just some Cloud rethread at all.

Also their initial proposals for Crystal Tools were nuts. It had the form the base of a single-player PS3 game and a PC MMO (Final Fantasy 14). The Good:
    - Paradigm Shift is an enjoyable combat system
    - Art Direction is one of the best in the series, even better than my favourite FF
    - Great Soundtrack that was both soothing and intense
    - Story was enjoyable despite being the first entry in a trilogy
    The Bad:
    - Linearity with most chapters inaccessible after completion
    - Lack of towns and freedom of exploration until near the end of the game
    - Characters weren't the series strongest protags (Only one I liked was Sazh)
    - Lack of a prominent villain until the next game
    - Lightning has little character development and very unlikable personality
    - The fact the story would continue through spin-offs was underwhelming

As a writer of nearly two decades of experience, I feel I speak with a modicum of authority when I say, "That trailer doesn't represent an artistic vision for a final product; at best it would represent the visual vision of the immediate gameplay."
Artistic visions permeate all aspects of the game. A recent example would be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As a game that takes place shortly after Episode 3, dealing with survivors of the Jedi Purge, the theme is surviving on your own. Cal and Cere are both learning to deal with Survivor's Guilt, Merrin is also a survivor trying to find a way to live with it all, Taron Malicos is someone who snapped under the strain of surviving (possibly also a result of Survivor's Guilt) and lost himself, the Second Sister lost herself as part of her need to survive, all being reflections of the heroes own struggles and potentially how they themselves could have turned out. So it's no surprise the game demands technical perfection of the player, where a few lapses in concentration and not quickly adapting can mean the difference between life and death. And when you do fail, you get the chance to get all your XP back if you endure all you experienced and face your foes again; really, the Soulsbourne system worked perfectly with this story setting.
Because those elements all worked together and complemented each other, that's how that game was made under a singular artistic vision. Seeing how the battle system should look is NOT an artistic vision, in my humble opinion.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Final Fantasy 13 is my favorite of them all (the first game). I never understood peoples linear complaints because the other games had linear areas as well...and yes i played most ff games 7 - 15 as well as spin offs like crisis core, dierge, and World of FF (15 being the absolute worst). The gameplay i think is wonderful and strategic and the graphics still hold up to todays standards. Also it has one of the best sound tracks of any FF. The story was ok however not amazing but i still appreciate them altering the teams to compliment what is happening in the story and who leaves from the group. This is something people complain about too which i think is just being petty.
Also its a great cast of characters (minus hope). I really haven't seen such a large range of well designed characters since 10 or 7. I have no idea why people say this games bad but from the moment i played it i was blown away.
The other two sequels just didnt live up in quality. Honestly i was mad they forced out two more games by saying bs happened at the of 13 causing all these problems. While ill admit 13-2 had a better story and main villian...it was less polished than 13. The cutscenes had heavy frame rate issues, animations were more clunky on movement especially outside combat and the graphics actually seemed slightly worse. And lightning returns i didnt like at all. The gameplay change and leveling/time and day and night area unlocks was a bad change imo. 13-2 was enjoyable because of its story and gameplay especially the customizable monster team members. But LR had no party and a weird battle system i wasnt a fan of.
So imo ff13 (the original) was the best ff game to come out in the last decade if not all time only rivalling 10,7 or 8.

I've said this a thousand times! And I'll say it again! I enjoyed the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy!
The first one had it's problems. Though I still had a wonderful time playing it! I loved the characters, the story, the graphics, the OSTs! It's not one of my favorite Final Fantasy games in the series, but I still felt it was an enjoyable experience! It could have been worse, and it could have been better. Final Fantasy XIII-2 highly improved over the first game! Honestly, my only complaint with the sequel was the lack of playable characters! Especially not having Lightning! The main character! Even though for some reason they decided to put her on the front cover of the game lol In the first game, I loved ALL the characters! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing as Sarah for the first time! Noel was an awesome new character to add! And I thought Mog was adorable! I just wish they added the previous characters back to the roster! But to be fair, a few of them do make cameos! Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns......IS AMAZING! I really had fun with that game! Why? Well, unlike the previous games, this one was more of an open world experience! And as the title says, Lightning returns! And she plays wonderful! Yes, I can understand people's complaints with this game. But it didn't bother me! Doing side quests and just exploring the worlds was just breath taking! I consider it my favorite in the FFXIII Trilogy! And one of my favorite RPGs! As a whole, I enjoyed the Trilogy! Even till this day, I'm still upset Square still hasn't brought the trilogy to PS4! They did that for the Xbox One owners! But not PS4! Square brought remasters of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII & XIV to PS4! But not the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy!? Who knows, maybe they'll bring the trilogy to PS5! Of course, all of this is just *MY* opinion! I really hope Square will remaster FFXIII and it's sequels! because I would really love to experience them all over again!

Remake 13 and remaster 2 and 3, make 13/1 open world and free, better more flexible combat and game play, variety of locations for combat scenarios. Make it large scale. I would also love an open world spin-off taking place in Valhalla during 13/2 lightning being front and center in story.

Is it surprising that poor communication between departments culminated in poor communication with the audience?
I can't say I particularly enjoy playing FF13 compared to other titles and the lack of cohesion on so many levels of development really shows, but I do think it was trying to show people something important that, unfortunately, was overshadowed by all these difficulties.
It's not just the infamous linerality of the thing, but the oppressive feeling of vacuity throughout. There are sporadic changes in environment that feel completely dissociated from each other. The characters are solidly designed, but didn't have much support from the plot to really help them take root.
Fang in particular interested me because of her return from crystal in order to take on a new a focus.
Interactions were dull, aimless, and sound like a perfect representation of the numerous meetings staff at Square must have had to try and figure out what in the high holy hell they were supposed to be doing.
They all had this hazy glimpse of a game, but none of them could hardly get a beat on it, let alone agree with the others about what their half-remembered fragment really meant or how it was supposed to fit in with the others.
Some confusing choices were made overseas too, like using a Leona Lewis song for no discernible reason other than because she was popular.
It still has Squares pithy incorporation of mythological imagery and luxurious art, like the luminescent angel/goddess figure playing a harp with an intricate feathered headdress that I paused the video on at complete random.
The underlying theme of FF13 is to take one's life into one's own hands and yet every choice they made only seemed to draw them closer to the inevitable.
People like to talk big about taking on fate, but have no idea what that means in practice because they cat like fate is something that happens to them and not something that they are a participant in.
You don't have to overcome fate; a sentiment echoed in the various times the characters spoke about how they didn't need their focuses. If you accept that everything you do is fate, then anything that happens is your will; is your focus. If you reject it, then you're at odds with fate and you're setting yourself up for confusion.
As I've hinted, this is explored, but not very effectively and by the end the heroes seem to have almost completely contradicted themselves and only manage to save the world by complete accident.
The game has an interesting way of discussing the archetypes. Instead of presenting them as god figures, they are more literally represented as the process of nature; vast machines called fal'cie who, interestingly, despite their immense scale and power, and expressed to be mankind's sibling and not it's parent or superior, which is in line with the role of the unconscious. We couldn't live without the processes that keep our hearts beating and our abstract desires seem to make them rebel against us, and yet at the same time they cannot go against their innate biological function.

That explains the FFXIII delays, which I was aware of at the time they were happening. But then FFXV went on to have massive delays and problem as well. This speaks to a huge mismanagement problem at Square Enix. As in their directors and executives don't know how to get their team to be focused on working towards completion. The fact that we are 5 years after the release of FFXV and still no news of FFXVI. FFVIIR was not supposed to be a replacement for a main title, yet here we are.

They focused too much on graphics, what make them lack a lot in other areas, like gameplay and history, those are 2 really important factors in a rpg... i mean the gameplay is automatic, terrible decision for a really long game, tge progression system is linear, what it doesnt give any margen to creativity for players, the history is not interesting at all, i played 1 time and i didnt understand what was a fal ciw or a lucie but they keep saying it in every conversation...
Ff13 have a beautiful music area but you dont play a game for the music... graphics and music are elements supporting the main game, for me... a good history is the most important in a final fantasy, following the gameplay.
Also it doesnt help at all the team, lightning is amazing dont get me wrong.. but the rest of the team is like.. meh... they need non humanoid in the team always, thats what make final fantasy so rich in variety.
It definitely a lost oportunity, but i am sure they learnt from that and together with ff versus 13 and its bad ending with ff 15 they will probably redeem themself with ff 7 remake and something is telling me that they gonna come back with ff 16 to "old school" idea where the history could be even one of the best ever been created, they will.

Those who say the game is too linear are blind because all FF are lienear one way or another, they just deceive to think they ar not. When i had the oportunity to see the game in action i was amazed by it's graphics and the time FFXIII came to me was an important time back then. I kinda understood what the developers wanted us to feel about it, the feeling of the shackles, the decision to fight back and the freedom to choose what we want besides fate. One of my favorite experiences.

Final Fantasy XIII has aged well (imo) thirteen years after its release. The battles are fast, fun to watch and are classic turn-based, something FF games seem to have gotten away from. The cutscenes are beautifully animated, and the story was interesting and actually felt complete by the end. Playing the game now, the linearity is a breath of fresh air, especially after playing a (seemingly) endless supply of open world games rife with pointless fetch quests. Among the new era of Final Fantasy games (10-15) and I would say that Final Fantasy XV is the true dumpster fire of the series, not FFXIII.

Both FFXIII, FFXIV and Versus XIII suffered a lot because of Crystal Tools and that utter lack of management..

Voice overs have not been SE's strongpoint either. Those child voices.. Everything since FFX is in my opinion so far from the fundamentals of what made a good FF.. Especially X-2, XIII, XV
FF6 to FF9 are my games. But I adore all the ones before too. Will never forget I thought Aerith was sexy as hell in that intro movie back then. Also everything was way more dark and gloomy in the older games. And I miss Nobuo's music. Sunk almost 3k hours in XIV. But in the end it's just another MMORPG in the theme of FF. Not a Final Fantasy.

Having played the 360 version of FFXIII, which was divided into 3 DVDs totaling 18.6 GB, I wonder if some of the cut content was because they couldn't fit it into them, similar to how the PS1 games usually cut content on the later discs (such as locations being cut by Iifa Tree's roots on FFIX, or Time Compression on FFVIII). Note that the PS3's Blu Ray could fit up to about 50 GB, in comparison.
This is further emphasized by the fact that pre-rendered cutscenes are heavily compressed on it too, and that the point at which the game "opens up" is also when you switch to Disc 3 (namely, Gran Pulse).

It's almost like XIII was one of those albums that a really awesome band has that just doesn't really hit home. XIII has a lot of good themes, looks, and sounds amazing...the game definitely suffered, the story wasn't executed well, hardly any backstory for anything, and overall it was lacking some Final Fantasy, it was almost like a Star Ocean game. Overall though, I played it start to finish when it came out and loved it and XIII-2 and 3 bolstered the story into something much bigger and completely different which ended up pretty cool.
