  • A three-movement suite, Cheonnyeon Manse (ca. 1400) is from the Chamber Music Collection of the music of aristocracy (Cheongak). The piece is part of the repertoire of the string ensemble, chulpungryu, for the male scholars of the Choseon Dynasty at a social gathering known as p’ungryubang.
Each movement has a distinctive melodic mode and rhythmic cycle. The first movement is performed in relatively slow tempo, followed by the second movement in faster tempo, with the slow tempo returning in the third movement. The second movement particularly is exciting and has the fastest tempo among all the cheongak pieces.
Cheonnyeon Manse is usually performed as an octet, but in this arrangement is performed as a trio for se-piri (double reed instrument), janggu (hourglass drum), and yangquin (chinese hammered-dulcimer).
