- More black men are in prison today than are in college. The underperformance of African-American males in elementary and secondary schools is a persistent crisis. Sharokky Hollie, founder of the California-based Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning, says part of the problem is that many schools don't validate the home culture of black male students. Hollie has developed teaching methods that are more culturally and linguistically responsive, allowing for that crucial initial engagement between teacher and student. Here, he discusses those approaches, demonstrates training exercises, and explores the meaning of culture versus race.

The system didn't fail the people that are running it failed the system has been around for millions of years literally physically I am a historian a very fat headed historian and I have just studied that recently. They have super ultra mega screw things up even if you knew everything that was screwed up it would take another 400 years to undo everything but then we have computers nowadays some maybe 40 years or less to revert back to normal to make America no more most definitely the US and you can forget about the USA yes they are all different things yet one in the same look it up it's on Google and CZcams all day everyday 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year

I taught a large group of students about 50 different significant black figures in history. As they were learning, one black student said "Wow, I never thought black people ever did anything good. I thought white people did everything." A white male student said "I'm finding out that black people actually can be smart."

There are too many deterrents built into the system. " The office" is the door to the prison pipeline whereby even black so called professionals feed our boys right into the mouth of despair. The solution to this problem begins at home.Our young boys need structure which a combination of responsible examples who are disciplined themselves and who can stimulate the young child to see his purpose and the value of reading Our children do not read enough.And the material that should read will enable them to have greater pride in themselves and will develop them as free thinkers as they move into their critical adolescent years.
You are absolutely correct. I am a public school teacher and I work with ECE/BD youth 11Black boys in my classroom all from single parent homes with different daddys and none are involved in thier life. First problem stems from the Mother making poor choices to have children out of wedlock, by every boyfriend she sleeps with. This has nothing to do with the affects of slavery because in the 40s and 50s Black families were in tact and Black males excelled in Black schools. But today the Single moms curse us out and blame the white people when there are good white teachers that do care. But what do you do when your student is defiant because of how they are raised at home and only comes to school to eat and get attention by acting out insted of wanting to learn. How many Black homes do you know that have even a Dictionary in there homes? Parents forget that they were once students.

We need our own schools and to have our God's and Goddesses teaching our young generation on how to do taxes, learning our own history of where we come from and who we really are, on how to build our own businesses and to keep the dollar in our own community etc. We are 9 ether beings, we come from the ancestors who created the cosmos. We've been brainwashed and tested on since birth. One of the main reasons we been miseducated in they schools is because they fear of us finding out who we really are as a species. The time is now, unlearn and relearn!
Integration was not a good idea for copper colored people. It did not allow us to get to know ourselves after we lost so much of ourselves during slavery.

In 2020 there are more than a half million more black men in college than in prison. While not perfect it is certainly better than the reverse.
That gap is too small. It’s more black men in america incarcerated then all women on the planet.

Very insightful to distinguish cultures and those oblivious to the culture shock. Interestingly let’s fast forward to 2021. Still a huge gap in culture and comprehension. As a result many black kids, particularly black boys, are ruled off as having severe ADHD, placed on meds and after school programs. A dismissive approach that displays the greed of the educational institutions and big pharma. Very corrupt. My own opinion, for schools and schooling our on American Aboriginal so call black children's we need to go back build our own school for our children's, I remember when we intergenerational in to white people school ,I was in the 7th grade.it was the worst time of my life in the State of Louisiana, it was not any problem with Race riot.anything it was the all white Teachers we had,they the school board got rid almost all our black teachers, if it had not been for our mom who had been educate on all level of life very smart in special all mathematics, English, it was crazy she would council with is every night and day , doning that period 1967_1968 she would tell us dont forget who you are, you are smarter than the white race they are not better than you, she would say if they can make and A on there assignments you will make an A+, and that's what my brother and sister did.my older sister they all didt go to white school, all black school, they were super smart,cause they had black teachers that care and love them,where as the white teachers where I grew up,didt care

Anyways now days I really am surprised and blessed I am so educated an once was so blind I went to the slave plantation(prison) fresh outta high school didn't get out till almost 26 only out for year&half an got shot in the head from behind with several shots 2 the body an. All black children should learn to play jazz instruments. Black people invented jazz, and jazz is the most complex form of music in existence. Art Tatum was a greater musician than Bach. Black people differ from whites in that they do not have neanderthal ancestry. The IQ test is mostly visual. Black intellect is mostly auditory, by contrast. It can only be nourished and caused to blossom by means of EARLY musical education. Please let me know if you agree with this assessment. Sincerely, a concerned person.

I’ve been an advocate of homeschooling long before I bore my one and only daughter over a decade ago!
Forced busing to achieve integration was the worst thing that happened to our Black communities. It forced our children to be but in a hostel environment with white teachers that did not have their best interest in heart.
When I grew up in the Midwest I went to an all Black school with all Black teachers. There was no way that you would pass to another grade with out meeting the grade level standards. Those teachers lived in our communities and if they had children they also went to the same school that they parents taught in. We didn't have children getting kicked out of school for trivial matters. Our teacher were allowed to paddle the students, and believe me if was preferable to calling our parents. I remember I told my teacher to paddle me and not to call my father, because I knew if he or my mother had to come up to the school for any bad behavior it was not going to be good for me, because at that time, the parents could take you into the coat closet and paddle you there, and you would get another when you get home.
In my grade school we had instrumental music, chores, art, gym, we went on field trips to art museum, and this was all under a segregated school system that we loved. Once I was married and had my children the school system under integration had changed and not for the better they were slowly loosing the things that I had in grammar school under a segregated school system.
Once my grandchildren came a long, you were getting high school graduates graduating without the ability to read. This never happened in my time nor in my parents time that you will complete high school and not able to read. They don't have instrumental music, chores, art, gym in the inner city schools.
I totally agree with you because most teachers will just pass a child to the next grade because they do not want to deal with the behavior issues and then when you have a Black teacher that cares and it is brought up that the child needs to be held back, the parents that do nothing to help the situation (poor parenting) fight you to pass their child to the next level because they have written that child off to ECE/LBD and are getting a SSI check for that child. On the other hand for example the other problems are the issue of how did the child get to the failing level in the first place.

Parents need to be proactive instead of reactive, start searching schools out instead of placing them in neighborhood schools 😱😱😱🤔🤔🤔!!!! If your neighborhood school is failing then get a school voucher and place them in a private school but no you’re too proud for that and your children suffer!!!!! Stop trying to separate and then complaining on the other hand, sometimes it’s the best thing for the child to be placed in a private school because their home situation is bad👀👀💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️, it does broaden their horizons!!!!!

When you send a child to any private school it is better because they are paid to teach your child so your parental involvement is going to be better. We cannot teach effectively if the parents are not totally involved.
